SUMMARY:Elie Wiesel: Soul on Fire
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2025 Central Florida Jewish Film Festival.  \nWith his unforgettable and shattering 1958 memoir Night\, Elie Wiesel forever changed the way the Holocaust would be written about. A survivor of Auschwitz and Buchenwald as a teenager\, the Romanian-born Wiesel became an international spokesperson and renowned author\, eloquently transforming his trauma into literature of the highest and most profound order. In this enthralling new documentary\, filmmaker Oren Rudavsky goes deeper into Wiesel’s philosophically abundant inner life\, depicted with nuance and tenderness\, and enriched by access to his personal archives. In many ways a private man despite being one of the most public voices of Holocaust remembrance\, Wiesel is presented here in newly intimate ways known only to his closest friends. Told largely through his own words and eloquent voice\, Elie Wiesel: Soul on Fire stands as a crucial testament to an extraordinary man who helped shape our collective memory of the darkest chapter of the 20th century. \nPurchase a Series or Mensch Pass to receive admission to all 5 Central Florida Jewish Film Festival films\, plus priority seating:\nMensch Pass $118 (limited quantity): Includes first priority seating to all 5 films and a donation to Shalom Orlando\nSeries Pass $65 (limited quantity): Includes discounted admission to all 5 films and second priority seating \nPlease note\, there are no Enzian Film Society Member discounts or table reservations for Central Florida Jewish Film Festival films.

SUMMARY:Pink Lady
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2025 Central Florida Jewish Film Festival.  \nIn an ultra-Orthodox community in Jerusalem\, Bati leads a seemingly perfect life with her husband\, Lazer\, and their three children. But her world begins to crumble when her husband is blackmailed over an affair with his male Torah study partner. Desperate to protect her family and keep the man she loves\, she supports Lazer as he attempts to “cure” his homosexuality. Surprising and suspenseful\, this nuanced and provocative character study explores a marriage in peril and two young people desperate to save each other while confronting their own desires. With moments of levity and superb character-driven storytelling\, Nir Bergman’s restrained direction gains depth from strong performances and from the real-life experiences of the film’s screenwriter Mindi Ehrlich\, who was raised and married in Jerusalem’s Hasidic world. Told from Bati’s point of view\, it boldly addresses taboo subjects from a uniquely female perspective.

SUMMARY:The Most Precious of Cargoes
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2025 Central Florida Jewish Film Festival.  \nIn a snow-blanketed rural village during WWII\, a poor Polish woodcutter lives with his wife\, who is unable to bear children. Their small\, insular world drastically changes when a baby is thrown from a passing train headed to Auschwitz. Seeing it as a gift from God\, the woman pledges to raise the child—against the initial resistance of her husband\, and in the face of the rising antisemitic fervor of the local villagers. This visually stunning animated fable by Oscar®-winning filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) is narrated by the late French icon Jean-Louis Trintignant and accompanied by Alexandre Desplat’s stirring score. With hand-drawn artistry that evokes a timeless\, tactile beauty\, this cinematic gem delivers a poignant reflection on loss\, resistance\, and the enduring power of human connection. It is not only the first animated film to compete for the Palme d’Or at Cannes since Waltz with Bashir in 2008 but it’s the first ever animated feature to play the CFJFF.

SUMMARY:Dilli Dark
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2025 South Asian Film Festival. \nPurchase a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all 5 South Asian Film Festival programs\, plus priority seating! \nSoutheast Premiere! \nNew Delhi is not as “new” as the name might suggest. It is an ancient\, cosmopolitan city that has seen many rulers\, invaders\, and settlers over the centuries. It is a city that is multicultural\, yet hostile—forever playing out the battle between insider and outsider. But though Delhi has seen many kings\, one can say that the city is the only true monarch. \nMichael Okeke\, a Nigerian student now living there\, wants to get his MBA and settle in India\, but his part-time job as a small-time drug delivery guy gives him a dubious double life and jeopardizes his plans in a city notoriously difficult for outsiders. The first Hindi film with an African lead\, DILLI DARK is an outrageous comedy that is equal parts satire and love letter to Delhi\, and a journey into Indian society’s tricky relationship with race\, color\, and identity. \nPlease note\, there are no Enzian Film Society Member discounts or table reservations for South Asian Film Festival films.

SUMMARY:Tango Malhar
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 2025 South Asian Film Festival. \nPurchase a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all 5 South Asian Film Festival programs\, plus priority seating! \nSoutheast Premiere! \nIn the bustling city of Pune\, Malhar\, a young rickshaw driver\, shoulders the heavy burden of supporting his widowed mother and younger sister. Despite his unwavering dedication to family\, Malhar feels like an outcast among his peers\, his responsibilities isolating him from the carefree life of a typical young man. DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of “Reel Pride” at Enzian! \nThis June\, celebrate the power of queer representation through a collection of bold\, groundbreaking\, and deeply human films. From enduring classics to emerging voices\, REEL PRIDE showcases a rich tapestry of experiences that reflect the diversity\, resilience\, and creativity of the LGBTQIA+ community. Join Enzian for an unforgettable series of films\, designed to generate conversations and foster community through the lens of great storytelling. \nTongues Untied: \n***WINNER – Best Documentary Film – 1990 Berlin International Film Festival\n***2022 Selection for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress \nMade\, in director Marlon Riggs’s own words\, to “shatter the nation’s brutalizing silence on matters of sexual and racial difference\,” this radical blend of documentary and performance defies the stigmas surrounding Black gay sexuality in the belief that\, as long as shame prevails\, liberation cannot be possible. Through music and dance\, words and poetry by such pathbreaking writers as Essex Hemphill and Joseph Beam—and by turns candid\, humorous\, and heartbreaking interviews with queer African American men—Tongues Untied gives voice to what it means to live as an outsider in both a Black community rife with homophobia and a largely white gay subculture poisoned by racism. A lightning rod in the culture wars of the 1980s that incited a right-wing furor over public funding for the arts\, the film has lost none of its life-affirming resonance. \n1989\, 55 minutes\, USA\, Directed by Marlon Riggs\, Not Rated \n  \n \nPreceded by “Cashing Out”  \nFlorida premiere! Featuring a Zoom Q&A with director Matt Nadel! \n***WINNER – Best Documentary Short – 2024 Out on Film: Atlanta LGBTQ Film Festival \nAt the height of the AIDS crisis\, many gay men—unable to work and with few months to live—sold their life insurance policies to investors for quick cash. CASHING OUT charts the rise and fall of the hundred-million-dollar industry that grew from their desperation\, and spotlights one of its earliest investors: the filmmaker’s father. A gay man\, director Matt Nadel connects with survivors who help him understand the “AIDS profiteering” that is his inheritance. \n2023\, 40 minutes\, USA\, Directed by Matt Nadel\, Not Rated

Join Enzian for an unforgettable series of films\, designed to generate conversations and foster community through the lens of great storytelling. \nMy Beautiful Laundrette: \n40th Anniversary Screening! \nCelebrating 40-years of Enzian Theater\, each month we will highlight a classic film from 1985 to illustrate the lasting impact of the films of the era and the legacy of Central Florida’s only non-profit arthouse movie theater.  Thank you for being part of our 4-decade contribution to arts culture in Orlando. \nEnzian Film Club: Summer School Edition\nSummer school is in session! Our Enzian Film Club professors are on a well-deserved vacation\, but you’ve still got a lot to learn. Join us June–August for screenings and talkbacks with Enzian programmers and community guests\, and keep your brain (or at least your social skills) sharp until our return to class in September. It might not be Driver’s Ed\, but it’s better than independent study. \n  \nFeat. a post-film “Enzian Film Club” discussion with GLAAD Media Award recipient Barry Sandler!  \nStephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons\, The Queen) was at the forefront of the British cinematic revival of the mid-1980s\, and the delightfully transgressive My Beautiful Laundrette is his greatest triumph of the period. Working from an Oscar®-nominated script by Hanif Kureishi\, who was soon to be an internationally renowned writer\, Frears tells an uncommon love story that takes place between a young South London Pakistani man (Gordon Warnecke)\, who decides to open an upscale laundromat to make his family proud\, and his childhood friend\, a street punk (3-time Academy® Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis\, in his breakthrough role) who volunteers to help make his dream a reality. This culture-clash comedy is also a subversive work of social realism that dares to address racism\, homophobia\, and sociopolitical marginalization in Margaret Thatcher’s England. \nAbout Barry Sandler: \nBarry Sandler (Crimes of Passion\, The Other Side of Midnight) is a pioneering screenwriter best known for Making Love (1982)\, the first major studio film to depict LGBTQIA+ characters positively. The film was recently honored with a 40th anniversary celebration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2002\, The Advocate named him one of America’s most influential gay artists. Since 2003\, he has taught screenwriting and film history at the University of Central Florida. Sandler’s work has also earned numerous honors\, including the GLAAD Media Award and the Outfest Gay Pioneer Award.

When Linda’s sent to an island off the coast of Istanbul\, she meets the very Countess of those dreams. After quickly falling under the woman’s spell\, Linda finds she’s not the only one with an obsession for the Countess. With a thin plot to roll with\, Franco creates dazzling scenes of arty softcore bliss infused with psycho-sexedelic tunes. \nFreaky Fridays ticket prices include a free popcorn and soda or lemonade for all attendees! Alcohol can be purchased at Eden Bar. Regular food service will not be available for Freaky Friday events. So\, come early\, and fuel up outside for the night ahead!

SUMMARY:Shoshana
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 26th Annual Central Florida Jewish Film Festival! \nSet in British Mandatory Palestine\, this gripping historical thriller from celebrated British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom (A Mighty Heart\, The Trip series)\, weaves a story of star-crossed love with one of political radicalization and violence. The year is 1938 on the eve of the Second World War\, and tensions are high in Tel Aviv where the British control a mixed Arab and Jewish population in Palestine. English police officer Thomas Wilkin and Jewish journalist and activist Shoshana Borochov\, the daughter of the Zionist Labor movement co-founder\, are passionately in love. But political unrest is escalating. Avraham Stern is leading the Irgun in a deadly campaign against the British authorities\, who under the leadership of officer Geoffrey Morton (Harry Melling\, the Harry Potter series)\, have unilaterally increased their crackdown on both Jews and Arabs. Based on real people and events\, this rigorously acted and smartly crafted drama is a subtle homage to the noir classic The Third Man and an insightful portrait of the legacy of British colonialism and political violence. \nPurchase a Series or Mensch Pass to receive admission to all 5 Central Florida Jewish Film Festival films\, plus priority seating! \nMensch Pass $118 (limited quantity): Includes first priority seating to all 5 films and a donation to Shalom Orlando \nSeries Pass $65 (limited quantity): Includes discounted admission to all 5 films and second priority seating \nPlease note\, there are no Enzian Film Society Member discounts or table reservations for Central Florida Jewish Film Festival films.
