SUMMARY:Against the Tide
DESCRIPTION:East Coast Premiere!  \nRakesh and Ganesh are so close\, they consider themselves brothers. Both are fishermen of Bombay’s Indigenous Koli community\, but they’ve taken contrasting paths. Rakesh uses his inheritance — his father’s boat and the knowledge passed down by generations of Koli fisherman — to fish in the traditional ways\, while Ganesh — who was educated abroad — has instead embraced modern\, technology-driven\, and environmentally destructive methods of deep-sea fishing\, causing increasing friction between the friends. But with declining fish populations caused by pollution and invasive species\, neither man is finding much success\, adding to the burdens facing their young families\, and testing the bonds of their brotherhood. Director Sarvnik Kaur takes a deeply humanistic and intimate approach in her profile of these two men at a crossroads in both their friendship and profession. Immersing the viewer in their experiences\, where neither man is hero or villain in the choices they make to survive in an imperiled world\, she presents a microcosmic\, sea level view of the fragility of our relationship with the changing environment. Winner of the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Verite Filmmaking at Sundance 2023. \nBuy a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all 5 South Asian Film Festival films\, plus priority seating!

SUMMARY:Plan 75
DESCRIPTION:Buy a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all four Reel Representation programs! \nWinner\, Camera d’Or\, Special Mention\, Cannes Film Festival\, 2022  \nOfficial Submission – Japan –  ‘Best International Feature Film’ category of the 95th Academy Awards\, 2023.  \n In a near dystopian future\, Japan’s government launches Plan 75\, a program encouraging the elderly to terminate their own lives to relieve its rapidly aging population’s social and economic burdens. In Chie Hayakawa’s remarkable and sensitive feature film debut\, the lives of three ordinary citizens intersect in this new reality as they confront the crushing callousness of a world ready to dispose of those no longer deemed valuable.    \nLegendary Japanese actress Chieko Baishō (Howl’s Moving Castle) stars as a 78-year-old Michi who considers signing up for the program after losing her meager but fulfilling hotel job and the means to live independently. A young Plan 75 salesman Himoru (Hayato Isomura) initially believes in the program’s benefits and serves as the human face of the program. And Maria (Stephanie Arianne)\, a Filipino care worker living overseas\, reluctantly accepts a position with Plan 75 to send money home to her ailing daughter. On the surface\, the plan and its hawkers exude a kindness that serves as the film’s chilling vision of bureaucratic indifference and our increasing loss of interconnectedness. However\, Hayakawa’s view is far from grim\, as these characters soon learn to fully reckon with their own lives and what it truly means to live.

SUMMARY:ᏓᏗᏬᏂᏏ (We Will Speak)
DESCRIPTION:Buy a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all four Reel Representation programs! \n  \nFlorida Premiere  \nThe Cherokee language is deeply tied to Cherokee identity; yet generations of assimilation efforts by the U.S. government and anti-Indigenous stigmas have forced the Tri-Council of Cherokee tribes to declare a State of Emergency for the language in 2019. While there are 430\,000 Cherokee citizens in the three federally recognized tribes\, fewer than an estimated 2\,000 fluent speakers remain—the majority of whom are elderly. The COVID pandemic has unfortunately hastened the course. Language activists\, artists\, and the young must now lead the charge of urgent radical revitalization efforts to help save the language from the brink of extinction.  \nThis feature-length documentary was shot on-location in Oklahoma and North Carolina throughout 2019-2022; through intimate interviews\, vérité footage of community gatherings\, and extensive archival materials\, the film explores the nuanced ways the Cherokee language is vital to maintaining a unique cultural identity and relationship with the world. The collaborative project is also meant to act as an empowering agent of hope for Indigenous voices despite enduring inequity and oppression.  \nJoin us after the screening for an in-person Q&A with Co-Director Schon Duncan (ᎤᎶᎩᎳ)\,

SUMMARY:Persian Lessons
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: this film is showing at the Orlando Science Center Digital Adventure Theater\, which does not have concessions.  \nAn official selection at numerous international festivals and Belarus’ submission for the 2021 Best International Film Oscar®\, Vadim Perelman’s Persian Lessons proceeds from a spellbinding premise: In 1942\, Gilles (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart\, César winner for BPM)\, a Belgian Jew\, is sent to a German concentration camp. He escapes execution by claiming to be Persian\, but is ordered to teach the language (which he does not speak) to an SS officer (veteran actor Lars Eidinger)\, who plans to open a restaurant in Iran after the war. Gilles must somehow fabricate a language\, complete with rules and extensive vocabulary\, knowing that exposure of the ruse will cost him his life. To wit\, Ukrainian director Perelman\, best known for the 3-time Oscar-nominated Ben Kingsley drama House of Sand and Fog\, collaborated with a Russian linguist to devise a 600-word lexicon of ersatz Persian for this remarkably suspenseful\, superbly acted film. \nMensch Pass $118 (limited quantity): All 6 programs\, First Priority Seating\, Doors open 30 minutes early \nSeries Pass $72 (limited quantity): All 6 programs\, Discounted Admission\, Second Priority Seating \nIndividual Tickets $13 \nPasses and individual tickets can be purchased online or in person at Enzian’s box office.

SUMMARY:Nelson's Last Stand
DESCRIPTION:Nominated for Best Israeli Film at the 2021 DocAviv Film Festival\, this is the crazy story of the 1970’s bohemian holiday village established by Rafi Nelson on the Sinai border that found him caught in a border conflict between Israel and Egypt. In November ’77\, after years of war\, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat landed in Israel with a message of peace and a promise to take back the occupied Sinai soil. Nelson\, who feared losing his holiday village\, went to war to preserve his party paradise. He harnessed his comrades at the top of the government to protect the small country he had built. The affair\, which lasted nearly a decade\, is a web of political intrigue that forced Israel into an entanglement that endangered peace with Egypt. NELSON’S LAST STAND is an absurd look at the conflict in the Middle East through a square kilometer of passion. \nMensch Pass $118 (limited quantity): All 6 programs\, First Priority Seating\, Doors open 30 minutes early \nSeries Pass $72 (limited quantity): All 6 programs\, Discounted Admission\, Second Priority Seating \nIndividual Tickets $13 \nPasses and individual tickets can be purchased online or in person at Enzian’s box office.

SUMMARY:Rose
DESCRIPTION:Actress and now debuting director\, writer and composer Aurélie Saada pours a tremendous amount of personal nostalgia into ROSE\, a wonderfully emotional comedy-drama steeped in love for her North African Jewish roots\, from music (all written by Saada) to food — the credits even include her recipe for “makroudh\,” a date-filled cookie. The film stars legendary French actress Françoise Fabian (Luis Bunuel’s Belle de Jour and Eric Rohmer’s My Night at Maud’s) as a 78-year-old Parisian who has just lost her most beloved husband—a recent widow whose sorrow gives way to a deep thirst for life. This helps her realize that there is still time for her to redefine herself as a woman\, all while emerging from under her children’s straight-jacketing concerns. ROSE is an all-embracing effusion of Jewishness that’s a sure-fire crowd-pleaser. \nMensch Pass $118 (limited quantity): All 6 programs\, First Priority Seating\, Doors open 30 minutes early \nSeries Pass $72 (limited quantity): All 6 programs\, Discounted Admission\, Second Priority Seating \nIndividual Tickets $13 \nPasses and individual tickets can be purchased online or in person at Enzian’s box office.

SUMMARY:DUG DUG
DESCRIPTION:Buy a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all 5 South Asian Film Festival films\, plus priority seating! \nInspired by true events\, this religious satire brimming with vibrant color and irreverent glee explodes onto the screen right from its bravura opening sequence. When the sloppy escapades of a local drunkard result in a freak motorcycle accident that takes his life\, his motorbike is salvaged and locked away at the nearby police headquarters. When the bike suddenly appears inexplicably back at the crash site the next day\, the community becomes convinced that it is not only a miracle but an act of divinity. Soon after\, locals begin making offerings to the motorbike altar\, praying for salvation and worshiping the bike with a startling holy fervor. Filmmaker Ritwik Pareek’s cheeky\, incisive caricature of religious zealotry and commercialized worship zooms along with kinetic editing\, dynamic visuals\, and a raucous sense of humor that makes for a singularly electrifying cinematic thrill ride and an exciting feature debut.

SUMMARY:Tiger 24
DESCRIPTION:Buy a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all 5 South Asian Film Festival films\, plus priority seating! \nRiveting from start to finish\, this fascinating documentary takes a deep dive into who is responsible when animals kill humans in the Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve in India. The answer is a lot more complex than meets the eye. Filmmaker Warren Pereira introduces us to Ustad\, aka “Tiger 24\,” a gorgeous beast that’s been labeled a man-eater by the local government after being implicated in multiple attacks and apparently killing a man who has entered his territory. Removed from his natural habitat and locked up in a zoo\, Ustad’s situation results in massive social uproar\, activism\, and legal battles all the way to the Supreme Court. Conservationists\, bureaucrats\, and local villagers all weigh in on this complex story of people trying (and failing) to live together with tigers.

SUMMARY:All That Breathes
DESCRIPTION:Buy a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all 5 South Asian Film Festival films\, plus priority seating! \nHigh above bustling New Delhi\, birds of prey known as black kites have for years routinely been falling from the skies due to injuries sustained from pollution or manja\, the dangerous cotton threads of paper kites that slice through their wings. For decades\, brothers Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad—who believe in the interconnectedness of human and animal life—have taken it upon themselves to save the birds\, which the general city population largely sees as nuisances despite their essential role in the city’s ecosystem. In his hypnotic\, poignant\, and beautifully crafted documentary\, New Delhi–based filmmaker Shaunak Sen immerses himself with Saud and Shehzad for a portrayal of their struggle to make change that doubles as a diagnosis of a city rocked by turmoil. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary (World Cinema) at Sundance and the L’OEil d’or for Best Documentary at Cannes.
