SUMMARY:Tongues Untied
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of “Reel Pride” at Enzian! \nThis June\, celebrate the power of queer representation through a collection of bold\, groundbreaking\, and deeply human films. From enduring classics to emerging voices\, REEL PRIDE showcases a rich tapestry of experiences that reflect the diversity\, resilience\, and creativity of the LGBTQIA+ community. Join Enzian for an unforgettable series of films\, designed to generate conversations and foster community through the lens of great storytelling. \nTongues Untied: \n***WINNER – Best Documentary Film – 1990 Berlin International Film Festival\n***2022 Selection for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress \nMade\, in director Marlon Riggs’s own words\, to “shatter the nation’s brutalizing silence on matters of sexual and racial difference\,” this radical blend of documentary and performance defies the stigmas surrounding Black gay sexuality in the belief that\, as long as shame prevails\, liberation cannot be possible. Through music and dance\, words and poetry by such pathbreaking writers as Essex Hemphill and Joseph Beam—and by turns candid\, humorous\, and heartbreaking interviews with queer African American men—Tongues Untied gives voice to what it means to live as an outsider in both a Black community rife with homophobia and a largely white gay subculture poisoned by racism. A lightning rod in the culture wars of the 1980s that incited a right-wing furor over public funding for the arts\, the film has lost none of its life-affirming resonance. \n1989\, 55 minutes\, USA\, Directed by Marlon Riggs\, Not Rated \n  \n \nPreceded by “Cashing Out”  \nFlorida premiere! Featuring a Zoom Q&A with director Matt Nadel! \n***WINNER – Best Documentary Short – 2024 Out on Film: Atlanta LGBTQ Film Festival \nAt the height of the AIDS crisis\, many gay men—unable to work and with few months to live—sold their life insurance policies to investors for quick cash. CASHING OUT charts the rise and fall of the hundred-million-dollar industry that grew from their desperation\, and spotlights one of its earliest investors: the filmmaker’s father. A gay man\, director Matt Nadel connects with survivors who help him understand the “AIDS profiteering” that is his inheritance. \n2023\, 40 minutes\, USA\, Directed by Matt Nadel\, Not Rated

Bursting with colorful animation and kinetic comic book flourishes reminiscent of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World\, EGGHEAD & TWINKIE is filled with awkward crushes\, road trips\, an up-tempo collection of indie music to coast along with\, and two wonderfully cast leads in Sabrina Jie-A-Fa and Louis Tomeo who make you yearn for your high school besties. It transports you back to that awkward yet euphoric feeling of being a teenager in love before the cynicism of the real world kicked in. You know\, the “good old days.”

SUMMARY:My Beautiful Laundrette
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of “Reel Pride” at Enzian! \nThis June\, celebrate the power of queer representation through a collection of bold\, groundbreaking\, and deeply human films. From enduring classics to emerging voices\, REEL PRIDE showcases a rich tapestry of experiences that reflect the diversity\, resilience\, and creativity of the LGBTQIA+ community. Join Enzian for an unforgettable series of films\, designed to generate conversations and foster community through the lens of great storytelling. \nMy Beautiful Laundrette: \n40th Anniversary Screening! \nCelebrating 40-years of Enzian Theater\, each month we will highlight a classic film from 1985 to illustrate the lasting impact of the films of the era and the legacy of Central Florida’s only non-profit arthouse movie theater.  Thank you for being part of our 4-decade contribution to arts culture in Orlando. \nEnzian Film Club: Summer School Edition\nSummer school is in session! Our Enzian Film Club professors are on a well-deserved vacation\, but you’ve still got a lot to learn. Join us June–August for screenings and talkbacks with Enzian programmers and community guests\, and keep your brain (or at least your social skills) sharp until our return to class in September. It might not be Driver’s Ed\, but it’s better than independent study. \n  \nFeat. a post-film “Enzian Film Club” discussion with GLAAD Media Award recipient Barry Sandler!  \nStephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons\, The Queen) was at the forefront of the British cinematic revival of the mid-1980s\, and the delightfully transgressive My Beautiful Laundrette is his greatest triumph of the period. Working from an Oscar®-nominated script by Hanif Kureishi\, who was soon to be an internationally renowned writer\, Frears tells an uncommon love story that takes place between a young South London Pakistani man (Gordon Warnecke)\, who decides to open an upscale laundromat to make his family proud\, and his childhood friend\, a street punk (3-time Academy® Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis\, in his breakthrough role) who volunteers to help make his dream a reality. This culture-clash comedy is also a subversive work of social realism that dares to address racism\, homophobia\, and sociopolitical marginalization in Margaret Thatcher’s England. \nAbout Barry Sandler: \nBarry Sandler (Crimes of Passion\, The Other Side of Midnight) is a pioneering screenwriter best known for Making Love (1982)\, the first major studio film to depict LGBTQIA+ characters positively. The film was recently honored with a 40th anniversary celebration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2002\, The Advocate named him one of America’s most influential gay artists. Since 2003\, he has taught screenwriting and film history at the University of Central Florida. Sandler’s work has also earned numerous honors\, including the GLAAD Media Award and the Outfest Gay Pioneer Award.

SUMMARY:Vampyros Lesbos
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of “Reel Pride” at Enzian! \nThis June\, celebrate the power of queer representation through a collection of bold\, groundbreaking\, and deeply human films. From enduring classics to emerging voices\, REEL PRIDE showcases a rich tapestry of experiences that reflect the diversity\, resilience\, and creativity of the LGBTQIA+ community. Join Enzian for an unforgettable series of films\, designed to generate conversations and foster community through the lens of great storytelling. \nVampyros Lesbos: \nIncludes a special introduction by Nicole Richter\, PhD\, author of “Bisexual Erasure in ‘Lesbian Vampire’ Film Theory.” In partnership with Dyke Nite Orlando. \nIn a career that spanned 57 years and over 200 films\, the Vatican once called Spanish exploitation maverick Jesus ‘Jess” Franco “the most dangerous director in the world”.  This\, his retelling of the “Dracula’s Guest” story has gained a following over the decades via its erotic flights of surreal imagery\, psychedelic soundtrack\, and iconic performance by Franco muse Soledad Miranda as the Countess and has been often cited (and programmed along with Jean Rollin) as a controversial but still recognizable foundational work of early queer cinema. \nEwa Strömberg (She Killed in Ecstasy) stars as Linda\, a woman with recurring dreams about a woman seducing her. When Linda’s sent to an island off the coast of Istanbul\, she meets the very Countess of those dreams. After quickly falling under the woman’s spell\, Linda finds she’s not the only one with an obsession for the Countess. With a thin plot to roll with\, Franco creates dazzling scenes of arty softcore bliss infused with psycho-sexedelic tunes. \nFreaky Fridays ticket prices include a free popcorn and soda or lemonade for all attendees! Alcohol can be purchased at Eden Bar. Regular food service will not be available for Freaky Friday events. So\, come early\, and fuel up outside for the night ahead!

SUMMARY:Plan 75
DESCRIPTION:Buy a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all four Reel Representation programs! \nWinner\, Camera d’Or\, Special Mention\, Cannes Film Festival\, 2022  \nOfficial Submission – Japan –  ‘Best International Feature Film’ category of the 95th Academy Awards\, 2023.  \n In a near dystopian future\, Japan’s government launches Plan 75\, a program encouraging the elderly to terminate their own lives to relieve its rapidly aging population’s social and economic burdens. In Chie Hayakawa’s remarkable and sensitive feature film debut\, the lives of three ordinary citizens intersect in this new reality as they confront the crushing callousness of a world ready to dispose of those no longer deemed valuable.    \nLegendary Japanese actress Chieko Baishō (Howl’s Moving Castle) stars as a 78-year-old Michi who considers signing up for the program after losing her meager but fulfilling hotel job and the means to live independently. A young Plan 75 salesman Himoru (Hayato Isomura) initially believes in the program’s benefits and serves as the human face of the program. And Maria (Stephanie Arianne)\, a Filipino care worker living overseas\, reluctantly accepts a position with Plan 75 to send money home to her ailing daughter. On the surface\, the plan and its hawkers exude a kindness that serves as the film’s chilling vision of bureaucratic indifference and our increasing loss of interconnectedness. However\, Hayakawa’s view is far from grim\, as these characters soon learn to fully reckon with their own lives and what it truly means to live.

SUMMARY:ᏓᏗᏬᏂᏏ (We Will Speak)
DESCRIPTION:Buy a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all four Reel Representation programs! \n  \nFlorida Premiere  \nThe Cherokee language is deeply tied to Cherokee identity; yet generations of assimilation efforts by the U.S. government and anti-Indigenous stigmas have forced the Tri-Council of Cherokee tribes to declare a State of Emergency for the language in 2019. While there are 430\,000 Cherokee citizens in the three federally recognized tribes\, fewer than an estimated 2\,000 fluent speakers remain—the majority of whom are elderly. The COVID pandemic has unfortunately hastened the course. Language activists\, artists\, and the young must now lead the charge of urgent radical revitalization efforts to help save the language from the brink of extinction.  \nThis feature-length documentary was shot on-location in Oklahoma and North Carolina throughout 2019-2022; through intimate interviews\, vérité footage of community gatherings\, and extensive archival materials\, the film explores the nuanced ways the Cherokee language is vital to maintaining a unique cultural identity and relationship with the world. The collaborative project is also meant to act as an empowering agent of hope for Indigenous voices despite enduring inequity and oppression.  \nJoin us after the screening for an in-person Q&A with Co-Director Schon Duncan (ᎤᎶᎩᎳ)\,

DESCRIPTION:Buy a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all four Reel Representation programs! \nThirtysomethings Juan Núñez (Gael García Bernal) and Benjamín Wilson can’t seem to finish veterinary school or leave their parents’ homes in a Mexico City suburb. On a fateful Christmas Eve they decide the time has come to distinguish themselves by executing the most infamous cultural artifacts heist in Mexican history\, looting the iconic National Anthropology Museum. Inspired by true events and shot in never-before filmed locations\, MUSEO is a sardonic cautionary tale that underscores the old adage: you don’t know what you have until you lose it. Winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the 2018 Berlin Film Festival\, this is\, besides Roma\, hands down the most highly acclaimed Latin American film of the year.

SUMMARY:Rafiki
DESCRIPTION:Buy a Series Pass to receive discounted admission to all four Reel Representation programs! \nBursting with the colorful street style & music of Nairobi’s vibrant youth culture\, RAFIKI is a tender love story between two young women in a country that still criminalizes homosexuality. Kena and Ziki have long been told that “good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives” – but they yearn for something more. Despite the political rivalry between their families\, the girls encourage each other to pursue their dreams in a conservative society. When love blossoms between them\, Kena and Ziki must choose between happiness and safety. \nInitially banned in Kenya for its positive portrayal of queer romance\, RAFIKI won a landmark Supreme Court case chipping away at Kenyan anti-LGBT legislation. Featuring remarkable performances by newcomers Samantha Mugatsia and Sheila Munyiva\, this hip tale of first love is “reminiscent of the early work of Spike Lee” (Screen Daily) and one that’s “impossible not to celebrate” (Variety)!
