SUMMARY:Weird Science
DESCRIPTION:Eleven years ago\, writer/director John Hughes died of a heart attack on a Manhattan street corner. The man behind classic 80s teen films\, like The Breakfast Club\, Pretty in Pink\, Sixteen Candles\, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off\, had been called “the voice of a generation.” To our programming coordinator\, Tim Anderson\, he was more than that. “Hughes was the J.D. Salinger of my lifetime\,” says Anderson\, “a single man\, who chronicled the painful transition of adolescence.” Hughes’s films are touchstone reminders of what it is like to be awkward and socially inept as we all have tried to navigate the labyrinthine hallways of High School\, USA. We look forward to taking you on a journey through teenage truth – perhaps not everyone’s truth\, but the truth of a bunch of kids (and a computer-generated female Frankenstein) from the fictional town of Shermer\, Illinois. \nThe Frankenstein legend takes an uproarious twist in this outrageous special effects-laden comedy from the writer-director of Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. Critically acclaimed filmmaker John Hughes is at it again\, giving nerdy computer whiz Ilan Mitchell-Smith and his best friend\, Anthony Michael Hall\, power to create the “perfect woman” (Kelly LeBrock). Like a computer-generated fairy godmother\, the duo’s out-of-this-world creation guides the pair through the pleasures and pitfalls of adolescence. With a rock beat supplied by many music superstars including Oingo Boingo\, this far-out\, sci-fi fable brings everyone’s favorite teen fantasies to life through the miracle of Weird Science.

At 7 a.m.\, they had nothing to say\, but by 4 p.m. they had bared their souls to each other and become good friends. John Hughes\, creator of the critically acclaimed Sixteen Candles\, wrote\, directed and produced this hilarious and often touching comedy starring Emilio Estevez\, Anthony Michael Hall\, Judd Nelson\, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy. To the outside world they were simply the Jock\, the Brain\, the Criminal\, the Princess and the Kook\, but to each other\, they would always be The Breakfast Club.

John Hughes\, the writer of National Lampoon’s Vacation\, shows how coming-of-age can be full of surprises in this warm-hearted teenage comedy starring Molly Ringwald. She’s your average teen\, enduring creepy freshmen\, spoiled siblings\, confused parents and the Big Blonde on Campus who stands between her and the boy of her dreams. But wait…the day isn’t over yet! This sparkling film features a dynamic score\, and outstanding performances by Paul Dooley\, Emmy® winner Blanche Baker and Oscar® nominee Justin Henry.

She’s a high school girl from the wrong side of town. He’s the wealthy heart-throb who asks her to the prom. But as fast as their romance builds\, it’s threatened by the painful reality of peer pressure. A bittersweet story with an upbeat ending and a phenomenal rock score\, Pretty in Pink also stars Harry Dean Stanton\, Jon Cryer\, James Spader and Annie Potts.

One spring day\, toward the end of his senior year\, Ferris (Matthew Broderick) gives in to an overwhelming urge to cut school and head for downtown Chicago with his girl (Mia Sara) and his best friend (Alan Ruck)\, to see the sights\, experience a day of freedom and show that with a little ingenuity\, a bit of courage and a red Ferrari\, life at 17 can be a joy. Featuring Charlie Sheen and Jennifer Grey\, it’s of the most iconic films of the 80s\, and one of writer/director John Hughes’ best.

SUMMARY:Babyteeth
DESCRIPTION:When seriously ill teenager Milla falls madly in love with smalltime drug dealer Moses\, it’s her parents’ worst nightmare. But as Milla’s first brush with love brings her a new lust for life\, things get messy and traditional morals go out the window. Milla soon shows everyone in her orbit – her parents\, Moses\, a sensitive music teacher\, a budding child violinist\, and a disarmingly honest\, pregnant neighbour – how to live like you have nothing to lose. What might have been a disaster for the Finlay family instead leads to letting go and finding grace in the glorious chaos of life. Babyteeth joyously explores how good it is not to be dead yet and how far we will go for love. This Venice Film Festival double award-winner boasts an outstanding cast\, including Eliza Scanlen (HBO’s Sharp Objects)\, Essie Davis (The Babadook)\, and Emmy® award-winner Ben Mendelsohn (Netflix’s Bloodline).

SUMMARY:I Am Not Your Negro
DESCRIPTION:This show is on standby. A limited amount of numbered cards will be given to patrons who arrive at Enzian one hour prior to showtime. Right before showtime\, after ticket holders have been seated\, we will sell any remaining tickets. \nIn 1979\, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project\, Remember This House. The book was to be a revolutionary\, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers\, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King\, Jr. \nAt the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987\, he left behind only thirty completed pages of his manuscript. \nNow\, in his incendiary new documentary\, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical\, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America\, using Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And\, ultimately\, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders\, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for.

SUMMARY:The Trip to Greece
DESCRIPTION:One Week Only! \nThey’re back! After jaunts through northern England\, Italy\, and Spain\, Oscar-nominee Steve Coogan (Philomena) and buddy Rob Brydon (Tristam Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story) embark on another deliciously deadpan culinary road trip. This time around\, the guys head to Greece to sample the best of the country’s gastronomic offerings in between rounds of their hilariously off-the-cuff banter. When Odysseus left Troy\, it took him ten years to get back to his home in Ithaca. Steve and Rob have only six days on their own personal odyssey in The Trip to Greece. Along the way they argue about tragedy and comedy\, astronomy and biology\, myth\, history\, democracy\, and the meaning of life! Locations include the Temple of Apollo at Delphi\, the Ancient Agora of Athens\, the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus\, the Caves of Diros\, Nestor’s Palace\, Niokastro Fortress in Pylos\, and Ancient Stagira\, as well as restaurants and hotels in Athens\, Hydra\, Lesvos\, Chalkidiki\, Pelion\, Kavala\, and the Peloponnese. As always\, the locales are breathtaking\, the cuisine to die for\, and the humor delightfully devilish.

The film won Audience Awards at Atlanta\, Seattle\, Ft. Lauderdale\, Rochester\, Phoenix & Warsaw Film Festivals. \nThe arrival of marriage equality was seen by many as the pinnacle achievement of the march toward full equality for LGBTQ people. But for many on the Right\, it was the last straw\, and their public backlash has been swift\, severe\, and successful. In collaboration with religious conservatives\, politicians are invoking both the Bible and the U.S. Constitution in their campaigns for the ‘religious freedom’ to legally discriminate. By telling the stories of four families struggling with these issues\, the film offers healing and understanding to those caught in the crosshairs of scripture\, sexuality\, and identity.

The subject of a recent smash retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum\, af Klint was for years an all-but-forgotten figure in art historical discourse\, before her long-delayed rediscovery. Director Halina Dryschka’s dazzling\, course correcting documentary describes not only the life and craft of af Klint\, but also the process of her mischaracterization and erasure by both a patriarchal narrative of artistic progress and capitalistic determination of artistic value.

Disoriented by his past misgivings and subsequent\, unexpected blows to his self-esteem\, Tommaso wades through this late chapter of his life with an increasingly impaired grasp on reality as he prepares for his next film. Tommaso is easily Ferrara and Dafoe’s most personal and engrossing collaboration to date\, a delicately surrealistic work of autofiction marked by the keen sensitivity of two consummate artists.

Sellers lost confidence with the film as soon as it began and desperately tried to sabotage it\, firing the producers in the first week and then setting his sights on his friend the director\, Peter Medak. At its core lies the story of an unraveling production but also the tale of a young director firmly on a path to greatness. Medak had made 3 back-to-back successes; most notably ‘The Ruling Class’ in 1972 with Peter O’Toole (nominated for the Palm D’Or). This film changed his career forever. After 43 years\, the wounds have barely healed for Medak and this is his opportunity to tell the story and finally release the weight associated with its failure. The Ghost of Peter Sellers is a comic-tragic feature doc about what it takes to be a film director and survive your biggest disaster.

At five feet tall and 97 years old\, Diana is larger than life: a foul-mouthed fireball far more feisty and energetic than her age and petite frame let on. Author of nine Mexican cookbooks\, she has spent over 60 years researching and documenting the regional cuisines of Mexico. Kennedy has lived ‘off-the-grid’ on an eight-acre ranch outside Zitácuaro\, Michoacán since the 1970’s: composting\, growing her own crops\, and using solar power to run her home. Aware of her own mortality\, she is working tirelessly to solidify the legacy of her life’s efforts\, with the hope of turning her home into a foundation for culinary education in Mexico.

There is a thread that runs through the city that can be heard from the drumming at Congo Square in the 1700’s through to today’s vibrant music scene. The music of this city is a powerful form of expression. It was a vehicle to communicate a desire for freedom\, express frustration of the injustices of segregation and Jim Crow laws\, a healing force that helped bring the city back from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina\, and is still a vital form of expression against ongoing cultural & racial biases. Executive Producer Terence Blanchard and Director Michael Murphy\, show how the culture of the city is reflected in its music\, how music impacts culture; and how even in the darkest of times\, music lifts and unites. \nFeaturing Sting\, Bonnie Raitt\, Robert Plant\, Keith Richards\, Harry Connick\, Jr.\, Wynton and Branford Marsalis\, Fats Domino\, Louis Armstrong\, Professor Longhair\, Allen Toussaint\, The Meters\, Dr. John\, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, Ivan Neville\, and many others!
