SUMMARY:The World According to Garp
DESCRIPTION:A nurse during World War II\, Jenny Fields (Glenn Close) conceives with a dying pilot and bears a boy named T.S. Garp (Robin Williams) whom she raises alone. When Garp grows up\, he has some success writing fiction\, but not nearly so much as his mother has with feminist-themed nonfiction. Rich and famous\, she starts a center for troubled women\, and while Garp marries and has children\, he remains a constant\, if somewhat critical\, observer of the strange community that forms around Jenny. Based on the best-selling book by John Irving\, The World According to Garp is a terrific adaptation that received two Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Glenn Close) and Best Supporting Actor (John Lithgow). \nAfter the film\, there will be a discussion led by George McGowan\, a 2012 graduate of Rollins College Master of Liberal Studies program\, who just happened to write his master’s program entrance essay on The World According to Garp. He also writes a monthly pop culture column for The Park Press. All of that is in his “spare” time since he is the Director of Audit at the City of Orlando and a husband to Janna and father to three kids in college. At this event\, George hopes to initiate a conversation about how a movie can deliver upon the promise of a very good novel and even enhance one’s understanding of the novel’s themes.

A blue reef fish named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) — who has a really short memory — joins Marlin and complicates the encounters with sharks\, jellyfish\, and a host of ocean dangers. Meanwhile\, Nemo plots his escape from a dentist’s fish tank.

DESCRIPTION:Caleb Emery\, one of the stars of the film who you may recognize from TV shows like Good Girls\, Dear White People\, or Vice Principals\, will be in attendance on Saturday\, August 18th for a Q&A after the film. \nEvery serial killer is somebody’s neighbor. The directing triumvirate—who unleashed a neo-1980s extravaganza with their last film Turbo Kid—are back\, and this time they have set their sights on a small suburban town with a real mass-murder problem. In the middle of it all is Davey\, a 15-year-old kid with nothing much to do this summer but hang out with his sex-obsessed friends. When Davey suspects the killer might be the kindly cop next door (Rich Sommer\, GLOW\, Mad Men)\, he convinces his friends and his ridiculously beautiful former babysitter to investigate. Could Davey possibly be right\, or is it just his over-active imagination? While Summer of 84 might seem rooted in the success of similar nostalgic fare\, it really owes more to true ‘80s gems like The ‘Burbs\, The Goonies\, and The Gate\, where the films are fully committed to the peril their characters encounter without the benefit of pop culture hindsight. Because its intent is so pure\, this midnight movie an entertaining thrill ride with a lot of heart and humor\, that wouldn’t even seem a moment out of place if you had discovered it on an old RCA VHS tape that had been collecting dust in the back of your parents’ entertainment center.

With his librettist\, Francesco Maria Piave\, Verdi set out to create ‘something out of the ordinary’. Their success is borne out in every bar of a score that sees Verdi at his most theatrical: it bristles with demonic energy. \nThe warrior Macbeth fights on the side of the King of Scotland – but when a coven of witches prophesy that he shall become king himself\, a ruthless ambition drives Macbeth and his wife to horrific acts. \nMurder makes Macbeth king\, and intrigue and butchery are the hallmarks of his brief\, doomed reign.
