Joining us at the theater is Dr Philip Chang\, previous member of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) team and ATLAS Collaboration at the CERN LHC\, who will discuss his experience investigating the electroweak and the Higgs sector of the Standard Model (SM)\, as well as developing a novel charged-particle track finding algorithm to address the challenges of exponentially increasing computing resource usage at the LHC. \nImagine being able to watch as Edison turned on the first light bulb\, or as Franklin received his first jolt of electricity. \nFor the first time\, a film gives audiences a front row seat to a significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough as it happens. Particle Fever follows six brilliant scientists during the launch of the Large Hadron Collider\, marking the start-up of the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet\, pushing the edge of human innovation. \nAs they seek to unravel the mysteries of the universe\, 10\,000 scientists from over 100 countries joined forces in pursuit of a single goal: to recreateconditions that existed just moments after the Big Bang and find the Higgs boson\, potentially explaining the origin of all matter. But our heroes confront an even bigger challenge: have we reached our limit in understanding why we exist? \nDirected by Mark Levinson\, a physicist turned filmmaker\, from the inspiration and initiative of producer David Kaplan and masterfully edited by Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now\, The English Patient\, The Godfather trilogy)\, Particle Fever is a celebration of discovery\, revealing the very human stories behind this epic machine. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Philip Chang is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics at University of Florida.  After receiving his PhD at University of Illinois\, Urbana Champaign\, he started his postdoctoral fellow position at UC San Diego as a member of Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) team at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of CERN in Geneva.  In the past\, Chang had also been a member of ATLAS Collaboration at the CERN LHC. Chang’s primary focus is on the investigation of the electroweak and the Higgs sector of the Standard Model (SM) through studying production of multiple massive particles. Chang has also been developing a novel charged-particle track finding algorithm to address the challenges of exponentially increasing computing resource usage at the LHC\, leveraging industry advancements in heterogeneous computing and artificial intelligence techniques.

SUMMARY:The Shining: Forwards and Backwards
DESCRIPTION:Immortalized in Rodney Asher’s documentary ROOM 237\, THE SHINING: FORWARDS AND BACKWARDS is a masterwork of experimental video manipulation. John Fell Ryan and Akiva Saunders’ hallucinatory palindromic love letter to Kubrick’s finely tuned symmetric compositions. Created in 2011\, Ryan explained “we put the US DVD version into Final Cut\, removed all corporate logos and leaders at the beginning\, and cut all credits at the end. The entire film image sequence was then copied\, reversed\, and superimposed over the original forwards version.” What results is a mesmerizing acid trip experience of uncanny coincidences (or perhaps like the ‘satanic panic’ of the 1980s\, secret hidden messages when played in reverse) wherein the images and themes contained in Kubrick’s film are at times contradictory and complimentary to the story being told.  In short\, this is THE SHINING as you have never seen it (or dreamed it) before. Join us on this rare journey into the literal and figurative fracturing of cinematic sanity and get ready to get freaky!

SUMMARY:Neil Young: Harvest Time - 12/19 Encore!
DESCRIPTION:Created between January and September 1971\, this docu-film takes us on an intimate journey to Young’s farm in Northern California for the ‘Harvest Barn’ sessions\, to London for an iconic performance with the London Symphony Orchestra and to Nashville where the then 20 something Neil Young worked on various tracks of this signature album. The feature is a fan piece that has never been seen before. Performance and rehearsal content is intertwined into creative storytelling and includes most of the tracks from album Harvest (released in 1972) including “Heart of Gold”\, “A Man Needs A Maid”\, “Alabama” and “Old Man”. \nIn addition to the film\, this screening event includes an introduction by Neil Young\, recorded exclusively for movie theatre audiences. Hear Neil highlight the significance of Harvest\, 50 years after its release\, and how the recording of the album and the movie came together.
