SUMMARY:Caligula: The Ultimate Cut
DESCRIPTION:Absolute power corrupts in CALIGULA: THE ULTIMATE CUT\, an extensive reconstruction of the notorious 1979 spectacle. \nShadowed by the murder of his family\, Gaius Caligula (Malcolm McDowell) eliminates his devious adoptive grandfather (Peter O’Toole) and seizes control of the Roman Empire alongside his wife Caesonia (Helen Mirren) before descending into a spiral of depravity\, destruction\, and madness. \nA treatise on the corrupting influence of power\, this extensive reconstruction of the notorious 1980 spectacle\, CALIGULA: THE ULTIMATE CUT restores the complete performances of McDowell and Helen Mirren\, from an unprecedented amount of never before-seen footage. With a screenplay by Gore Vidal (Myra Breckinridge) and a supporting turn by Sir John Gielgud (Arthur)\, amid sumptuous designs by two-time Oscar winner Danilo Donati\, Caligula is a spectacle of cinematic decadence that audiences will never see the likes of again. \n**This film is unrated\, no one under the age of 18 will be admitted**

SUMMARY:The Shop Around the Corner
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Enzian Holiday Series! \n3-time Academy Award nominee Ernst Lubitsch’s 1940 romantic comedy The Shop Around the Corner stars James Stewart (It’s a Wonderful Life) as Alfred Kralik\, the top salesman at the Budapest leather goods store Matuschek and Company owned by Frank Morgan (The Wizard of Oz). After immediately falling out with new employee Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan)\, their relationship deteriorates even further as they’re forced to work alongside each other. What the pair don’t know is that they are actually pen pals\, and over the course of the endless stream of letters that they’ve sent to each other\, they have fallen in love. Set in the weeks leading up to Christmas and on Christmas Eve\, The Shop Around the Corner is about as elegant as classic movies get—even getting the Hollywood remake treatment with 1949’s Judy Garland film In the Good Old Summertime and 1998’s Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks delight\, You’ve Got Mail.

SUMMARY:Eno
DESCRIPTION:One Show Only! \nVisionary musician and artist Brian Eno — known for producing David Bowie\, U2\, Talking Heads\, among many others; pioneering the genre of ambient music; and releasing more than 40 solo and collaboration albums — reveals his creative processes in Eno\, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Gary Hustwit (HELVETICA\, RAMS). \nIn the first career-spanning documentary of the legendary and prolific artist and the world’s first generative feature film\, Hustwit set out to decode Eno’s creative strategies and examine his lifelong search for the meaning of music. Defying the hagiographic impulses of the music doc genre\, Eno draws from original interviews and the artist’s own staggering archive of never-before-seen footage and unreleased music\, as well as Hustwit’s original interviews. \nEach screening of the film will be a wholly unique experience. Utilizing a proprietary software system developed by Hustwit and digital artist Brendan Dawes\, the documentary offers millions of possible variations and ushers in a groundbreaking approach to storytelling. The result is a viewing experience that resonates with Eno’s own artistic practice\, his use of technology to compose music\, and the mercurial essence of creativity as his endless pursuit.

SUMMARY:Bad Santa
DESCRIPTION:Free movies on the Enzian lawn! \nWednesday Night Pitcher Shows are FREE and open to the public. Keep an eye on our Facebook for information about rescheduled shows due to weather. Free overflow parking is available at Park Maitland School and Peach Valley across the street. Outside food & beverage is not permitted. \nWant a reserved spot on the lawn with a bucket of beer and popcorn for your besties?  We have a limited number of exclusive picnic baskets for sale!  Grab one fast before the sell out. \n  \nUnrated Cut! \nInstantly qualifying as a perennial cult favorite\, Bad Santa is as nasty as it wants to be\, and there’s something to be said for comedy without compromise. The Coen brothers conceived the basic idea and served as executive producers\, but it’s director Terry Zwigoff (Crumb\, Ghost World) who brings his unique affinity for losers and outcasts to the twisted tale of Willie T. Stokes (Billy Bob Thornton)\, a hard-drinking\, chain-smoking\, foul-mouthed sexaholic safe-cracker who targets a different department store every holiday season\, playing Santa while he cases the joint with his dwarf elf-partner Marcus (Tony Cox). \nWith comedic support from Bernie Mac\, Lauren Graham\, Cloris Leachman\, and John Ritter in his final film\, Thornton milks the lowbrow laughs with a slovenly lack of sentiment\, warming Bad Santa’s pickled heart just enough to please a chubby misfit (Brett Kelly\, hilariously deadpan) who may or may not be mentally challenged. As dry as an arid martini and blacker than morning-after coffee\, Bad Santa is an instant cure for yuletide schmaltz\, but if you think this appropriately R-rated comedy is suitable for kids\, your parenting skills are no better than Willie’s.

SUMMARY:Blade Runner: The Final Cut
DESCRIPTION:Dive into the magic of cinema with the Enzian Film Club! Join us for an enriching experience where film enthusiasts and novices alike can explore classic films in a new light. Each session features a short presentation by esteemed professors from local colleges\, followed by collaborative discussions that bring fresh insights and foster a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking. Part of our Saturday Matinee Classics series\, the Enzian Film Club is your gateway to understanding and enjoying timeless cinematic masterpieces in a vibrant\, community-focused setting. \nFeaturing an Enzian Film Club discussion on “Sound Design” by Paul D. Reich from Rollins College. \nBased on the novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick\, Harrison Ford stars in this fascinating\, dark vision of the near future as a policeman who tracks engineered humans–a Blade Runner. In the year 2019\, the police department forces Rick Deckard (Ford) out of retirement to hunt four genetically engineered humans who have come to earth. Designed to do difficult\, hazardous work\, the manufactured humans are stronger\, faster and smarter than nonengineered humans. They feel no pain or remorse; they are almost indistinguishable from other humans … and they are killing people. Now Deckard must stop them before they kill again. \nAbout the speaker: Paul D. Reich\, Ph.D.\, is Professor of English and Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Rollins College. His most recent publication—“Under the Influence: Adaption\, Adultery\, and Acceptance in Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya and Ryusuke Hamagachi’s Drive My Car—appeared in the Spring/Summer 2024 issue of Comparative Drama.

DESCRIPTION:35mm presentation in the original “Odorama” \nAbused\, neglected\, and\, above all\, bullied in her own house\, the unhappy Baltimore housewife with a heart of gold and an acute sense of smell\, Francine Fishpaw (Divine)\, watches her already derailed life take a turn for the worse. To further complicate matters\, without a shred of shame\, Elmer–Francine’s sleazy husband and owner of the local X-rated theatre–is leaving her for another woman; her disdainful daughter\, Lu-Lu\, is bearing the child of her delinquent boyfriend\, and her glue-sniffing son\, Dexter\, is becoming a vicious foot fetishist. Then\, out of the blue\, the suave blonde charmer\, Todd Tomorrow (‘60s matinee-idol Tab Hunter)\, enters the picture\, and\, for once in her life\, Francine feels loved. Is there a crock of gold at the end of the rainbow? \nJohn Waters first foray into something approximating mainstream cinema\, was heavily influenced by 1950’s Douglas Sirk melodramas and was the first film in Waters’ oeuvre to garner an “R” rating; his previous films all being rated “X”.  Returning Dreamlanders\, Divine\, Edith Massey\, Mink Stole\, Jean Hill and Mary Vivian Pearce round out the cast in this camp classic. \nAs a special holiday gift\, all audience members attending this screening will receive a scratch-and-sniff Odorama card!

The brainchild of Josh Frank\, an Austin\, Texas drive-in theater owner\, Silents Synced is a series of cinematic/music mashups that will leave even fans of the legendary Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon phenomenon shocked with delight. \nThe inaugural film in this series couples F.W. Murnau’s century old masterpiece Nosferatu (1922) with genre-undefinable alt rock band Radiohead’s mind-blowing “Kid A” (2000) and “Amnesiac” (2001) albums. \nCreated exclusively for independent cinemas\, Enzian Theater is thrilled to bring this unique event to our Music Mondays series.

It was edited and premiered in May 1967. \n“I wanted to make a summation of my nervous system\, religious inklings\, and aesthetic ideas. I was thinking of\, planning for a time monument in which the beauty and sadness of equivalence would be celebrated\, thinking of trying to make a definitive statement of pure Film space and time\, a balancing of “illusion” and “fact\,” all about seeing. The space starts at the camera’s (spectator’s) eye\, is in the air\, then is on the screen\, then is within the screen (the mind). The film is a continuous zoom which takes 45 minutes to go from its widest field to its smallest and final field. It was shot with a fixed camera from one end of an 80 foot loft\, shooting the other end\, a row of windows and the street …. The room (and the zoom) are interrupted by four human events including a death. The sound on these occasions is sync sound\, music and speech\, occurring simultaneously with an electronic sound\, a sine-wave …. It is a total glissando while the film is a crescendo and a dispersed spectrum which attempts to utilize the gifts of both prophecy and memory which only film and music have to offer.” – Michael Snow\, Director
