SUMMARY:The Thin Man
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the Enzian Holiday Series! \nJoin us for a sparkling holiday matinee with this stylish\, witty mystery that mixes murder\, martinis\, and maybe a bit of mistletoe. Set against the Christmas backdrop of New York City\, the film follows retired detective Nick Charles (William Powell\, My Man Godfrey) and his glamorous wife Nora (Myrna Loy\, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House) as they trade playful banter and highballs while unraveling the disappearance of an eccentric inventor. \nPowell and Loy’s irresistible chemistry turned Nick and Nora into one of cinema’s most beloved couples—sophisticated\, funny\, and effortlessly cool. Adapted from Dashiell Hammett’s novel and directed by W.S. Van Dyke (Tarzan the Ape Man)\, the film’s blend of screwball comedy and sharp mystery helped define the detective genre for decades to come. \nWhether it’s the glittering parties\, the snow-dusted city streets\, or Asta the dog stealing the whole show\, The Thin Man is the perfect vintage cocktail of crime and Christmas cheer.

SUMMARY:Attack of the Beast Creatures
DESCRIPTION:40th Anniversary! \nCelebrating 40-years of Enzian Theater\, each month we will highlight a classic film from 1985 to illustrate the lasting impact of the films of the era and the legacy of Central Florida’s only non-profit arthouse movie theater.  Thank you for being part of our 4-decade contribution to arts culture in Orlando. \nIn the wild\, weird world of 1980s horror\, few films scream “shot on weekends in the woods of Connecticut” quite like Attack of the Beast Creatures. This micro-budget gem follows a group of 1920s shipwreck survivors who wash up on an island crawling with tiny\, Zuni fetish doll monsters with a serious taste for human flesh. \nShot in 1983 but not released until 1985\, the film is fueled by outrageous gore\, a sublime synthesizer score\, and jaw-dropping puppet effects.  This is what happens when a mid-century creature feature collides with DIY surrealism\, and everyone wins. \nOriginally known as Hell Island\, Attack of the Beast Creatures returns to the big screen for the first time in decades\, featuring a restoration from the original 16mm camera negative that celebrates a relic of regional horror filmmaking\, and delivers undeniable proof that with enough fake blood and puppet monsters\, every movie can be a great movie.

SUMMARY:Ernest Saves Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the Enzian Holiday Series! \n35mm Screening! \nThe second big-screen outing for Jim Varney’s (Toy Story 1 & 2) unforgettable character\, Ernest P. Worrell\, finds the well-meaning but accident-prone Ernest working as a cab driver in Orlando when he crosses paths with none other than Santa Claus\, who’s in search of his successor. What follows is a mix of slapstick chaos\, earnest heart\, and Varney’s signature physical comedy as Ernest does his best to save the day in his own unconventional way. \nA cult holiday favorite\, Ernest Saves Christmas helped cement Ernest as one of the most recognizable comic creations of the late 1980s. Originally born from a series of local TV ads\, Ernest evolved into a full-fledged pop culture phenomenon\, leading a string of feature films that showcased Varney’s unique blend of goofball humor and surprising sincerity. \nSo come out early\, grab a cocktail\, and get ready to get your “knowhutimean” on!

SUMMARY:Daisies (4k Restoration)
DESCRIPTION:4K Restoration! \nDive into the magic of cinema with the Enzian Film Club! Join us for an enriching experience where film enthusiasts and novices alike can explore classic films in a new light. Each session features a short presentation by esteemed professors from local colleges\, followed by collaborative discussions that bring fresh insights and foster a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking. Part of our Saturday Matinee Classics series\, the Enzian Film Club is your gateway to understanding and enjoying timeless cinematic masterpieces in a vibrant\, community-focused setting. \nFeaturing an Enzian Film Club discussion on “Experimental Cinema” with Nicole Richter\, PhD from Rollins College! \nIf the entire world is bad\, why shouldn’t we be? Adopting this insolent attitude as their guiding philosophy\, a pair of hedonistic young women (Ivana Karbanová and Jitka Cerhová)\, both named Marie\, embark on a gleefully debauched odyssey of gluttony\, giddy destruction\, and antipatriarchal resistance\, in which nothing is safe from their nihilistic pursuit of pleasure. But what happens when the fun is over? \nMatching her anarchic message with an equally radical aesthetic\, director Věra Chytilová\, with the close collaboration of cinematographer Jaroslav Kučera\, unleashes an optical storm of fluctuating film stocks\, kaleidoscopic montages\, cartoonish stopmotion cutouts\, and surreal costumes designed by Ester Krumbachová\, who also cowrote the script. The result is Daisies\, the most defiant provocation of the Czechoslovak New Wave\, an exuberant call to rebellion and widely considered one of the great works of feminist cinema.

SUMMARY:Linda Linda Linda (4k Restoration)
DESCRIPTION:Come early for live music at Eden Bar from 6:30–9:30pm! \n4k Restoration! 25th Anniversary! \nFor Kei\, Kyoko\, and Nozomi\, their dream of playing the final high school concert together is dashed when their lead vocalist quits the band. Desperate\, they recruit the very first person they see: Korean exchange student Son\, played by Doona Bae (THE HOST\, BROKER)\, whose comprehension of Japanese is limited at best. It’s a race against time as the group struggles to learn three songs in three days for the festival’s rock concert. \nLINDA LINDA LINDA is an effervescent\, tenderhearted snapshot of youth about the unparalleled joy of jamming out with your friends. The soundtrack fuses bangers from iconic Japanese bands The Blue Hearts and Base Ball Bear with original music composed by James Iha of the Smashing Pumpkins. The beloved classic from Nobuhiro Yamashita (GHOST CAT ANZU) is acknowledged by many as one of the greatest Japanese films of the 21st century. In celebration of its 20th anniversary\, the utterly charming and timeless classic returns with an all-new 4K restoration.

BLACK CHRISTMAS—one of the most influential Hitchcockian slashers of all time—is here to help. \nWhen sorority sisters Olivia Hussey (Romeo and Juliet\, Stephen King’s It)\, Margot Kidder (Superman)\, and Andrea Martin (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) find themselves under attack from a foul-mouthed killer\, it’s up to police chief John Saxon (A Nightmare on Elm Street) to even the odds. But what about Keir Dullea (2001: A Space Odyssey)\, the brooding art-school pianist? Could he have something to do with the mutilation rampage? \nBlack Christmas is a terrifying and demented holiday tradition that gets everything right. We’d expect nothing less from Bob Clark\, the pioneering director of A Christmas Story.

SUMMARY:Un Chien Andalou (with Live Score)
DESCRIPTION:All free La CinOMAthéque screenings will take place in the Truist Auditorium at the Orlando Museum of Art. \nACCESS FOR ALL AT OMA presents: \nLa CinOMAthéque: A collaboration between OMA and Enzian\, with generous support provided by the Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program. \nThe Orlando Museum of Art is thrilled to announce the launch of La CinOMAthéque in partnership with the Enzian Theater\, as part of its “Access for All at OMA\,” an all-new program offering FREE admission to the museum! \nAccess for All at OMA is a monthly free day dedicated to the community. La CinOMAthéque will be a series of 6 bimonthly free screenings of experimental\, avant-garde\, art films in the Truist auditorium at OMA on Access for All day. \nEach screening will be introduced by a UCF film professor and include a talkback with OMA Chief Curator Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon and Enzian Programming Manager Tim Anderson. \n  \nUn Chien Andalou: \n Featuring a live Score by Tinnitus Rex! \nA barrage of striking and irrational images\, designed to provoke\, are presented in a disjointed chronology\, jumping from the initial “once upon a time” to “eight years later” without the events or characters changing\, evoking a dream logic as its narrative flow. \nLuis Buñuel’s legendary first film\, Un Chien Andalou written with Salvador Dalí\, created a scandal at its premiere and its startling eye-slicing opening sequence has continued to shock viewers ever since. Despite Buñuel and Dalí’s energetic rejections of any rational meaning in the film\, Un Chien Andalou is an exploration of desire and the obstacles in the path of instinctual passion\, equally indebted to Surrealism and Freud and represents the first film in what is now considered the golden age of the avant-garde.

SUMMARY:Rare Exports
DESCRIPTION:An Enzian Holiday Tradition! Screening as part of the Enzian Holiday Series! \nIt’s the eve of Christmas in northern Finland\, and an ‘archeological’ dig has just unearthed the real Santa Claus. But this particular Santa isn’t the one you want coming to town. When the local children begin mysteriously disappearing\, young Pietari and his father Rauno\, a reindeer hunter by trade\, capture the mythological being and attempt to sell Santa to the misguided leader of the multinational corporation sponsoring the dig. Santa’s elves\, however\, will stop at nothing to free their fearless leader from captivity. What ensues is a wildly humorous nightmare – a fantastically bizarre polemic on modern day morality.

SUMMARY:Batman Returns
DESCRIPTION:35mm Screening! Screening as part of the Enzian Holiday Series! \nTim Burton’s darkly stylish sequel blends comic book spectacle with gothic fairytale\, cementing Burton’s singular vision of Gotham City. The film reunited Michael Keaton as the brooding Bruce Wayne/Batman\, while introducing two of the franchise’s most memorable villains: Danny DeVito as Oswald Cobblepot\, a grotesque yet tragic incarnation of The Penguin\, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle/Catwoman\, whose feline alter ego became one of the most iconic antiheroines in film history. \nAmid Gotham’s snowy\, neon-lit Christmas\, Batman faces chaos as The Penguin’s circus gang terrorizes the city and corrupt tycoon Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) schemes to drain its energy. After Shreck’s secretary Selina Kyle is reborn as Catwoman\, the trios intertwined destinies collide in a tragic showdown of betrayal\, desire\, and destruction. \nUpon release\, Batman Returns was notable for its strikingly dark tone and twisted holiday imagery—where Christmas cheer is subverted into a nightmare of consumerism\, corruption\, and fractured identities. Though controversial for its violence and mature themes (leading to a backlash from parents’ groups and toy companies)\, the film has since earned a reputation as a bold\, gothic outlier in the history of superhero movies.
