SUMMARY:Ringu
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 13+ Films of Halloween. \nSponsored by Rollins Master of Liberal Studies. Featuring a Book to Big Screen discussion with Professor Milt Moise of Rollins College! \nBefore The Ring terrified Western audiences\, there was Ringu—the groundbreaking Japanese horror film that changed the genre forever. Directed by Hideo Nakata (Dark Water) and based on Koji Suzuki’s bestselling novel\, Ringu follows journalist Reiko Asakawa as she investigates a mysterious videotape said to bring death to anyone who watches it. With just seven days to unravel the curse\, she descends into a chilling mystery that merges urban legend with supernatural terror. \nNot only did Ringu launch a global wave of J-horror\, it also redefined how atmosphere could be used to haunt audiences long after the credits roll. Its influence can be seen in countless films\, from psychological thrillers to ghost stories\, and even comedies. It also introduced the world to one of horror’s most iconic figures: Sadako\, whose slow\, silent emergence from the television screen remains a landmark moment in cinema. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Milt A. P. Moise is a Visiting Professor at Rollins College where he teaches courses in film\, television\, and literature. His research examines bipolarity in American fiction and television\, Rastafari epistemology in the TV show Westworld\, and self-referentiality in Caribbean fiction. His upcoming projects include serving as coeditor for a special issue in the Journal of Science Fiction\, Film and Television on Apple TV’s science fiction television dramas\, and as a producer on a short folk-horror film set in his native St. Lucia tentatively titled\, Bolom Birth. \nTry one of our 13 Cocktails of Halloween\, available at Eden Bar starting October 1: \n \nSADAKO’S SEVEN DAYS\nSake\, Rye Whiskey\, Gin\, Honey\, Tea\n \nLearn more about Rollins Master of Liberal Studies: \n \nDiscover MLS: Vespers Experience\nSunday\, December 7 at 4:00pm\nRollins College \nExperience the Master of Liberal Studies program through the Rollins Christmas Vespers performance\, a faculty led discussion\, and an opportunity to connect with alumni and current students. SUMMARY:Throne of Blood
DESCRIPTION:Stay after the film for a discussion led by beloved Rollins College Professor Emeritus Socky O’Sullivan! \nA former teamster\, jail guard\, and Nashville pub owner\, Maurice “Socky” O’Sullivan\, Kenneth Curry Professor of Literature Emeritus at Rollins\, is an award-winning teacher\, editor\, columnist\, and filmmaker. Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood offers him a chance to bring together his love of Shakespeare\, film\, and Enzian. In addition to teaching Rollins’ first film course and classes on Shakespeare on film\, he created the world’s first film festival course at the Florida Film Festival\, a course he and Denise Cummings have offered for almost two decades.  \nAlthough receiving mixed reviews after its premiere\, Throne of Blood is widely regarded today as the finest adaptation of the play and one of the finest film versions of the Scottish play. In addition to discussing the film on its own merits\, it raises important questions about cultural appropriation\, Japan’s reflections on World War II\, and any adaptation’s relationship with and responsibility to its original. \nThrone of Blood:\nReturning to their lord’s castle\, samurai warriors Washizu (Toshirô Mifune) and Miki (Minoru Chiaki) are waylaid by a spirit who predicts their futures. When the first part of the spirit’s prophecy comes true\, Washizu’s scheming wife\, Asaji (Isuzu Yamada)\, presses him to speed up the rest of the spirit’s prophecy by murdering his lord and usurping his place. Director Akira Kurosawa’s resetting of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” in feudal Japan is one of his most acclaimed films.

SUMMARY:Persepolis
DESCRIPTION:Stay with us after the screening for a Q&A discussion led by Professor Jeremy Carnes\, who is an instructor of English at Rollins College and a scholar of graphic novels and comics. \nPersepolis is the poignant story of a young girl coming-of-age in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of precocious and outspoken nine-year-old Marjane that we see a people’s hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power — forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless\, she outsmarts the “social guardians” and discovers punk\, ABBA and Iron Maiden. Yet when her uncle is senselessly executed and as bombs fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq war the daily fear that permeates life in Iran is palpable. As she gets older\, Marjane’s boldness causes her parents to worry over her continued safety. And so\, at age fourteen\, they make the difficult decision to send her to school in Austria. Vulnerable and alone in a strange land\, she endures the typical ordeals of a teenager. In addition\, Marjane has to combat being equated with the religious fundamentalism and extremism she fled her country to escape. Over time\, she gains acceptance\, and even experiences love.

SUMMARY:The Silence of the Lambs
DESCRIPTION:Stick around after the film for a discussion with Dr. Andrew Luchner of the Rollins College Psychology Department. Dr. Luchner utilizes clips from The Silence of the Lambs in his Psychopathology class to demonstrate personality disorders\, the difference between psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder\, and the often negative portrayal of mental health professionals in film.  \nJodie Foster stars as Clarice Starling\, a top student at the FBI’s training academy. Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) wants Clarice to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins)\, a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath\, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Crawford believes that Lecter may have insight into a case and that Starling\, as an attractive young woman\, may be just the bait to draw him out. \nTry one of our 13 Cocktails of Halloween\, available at Eden Bar throughout October! Especially:\n\nHello Clarice – $10\nDon’t worry Clarice\, there’s no body parts in this one… we think. SUMMARY:The World According to Garp
DESCRIPTION:A nurse during World War II\, Jenny Fields (Glenn Close) conceives with a dying pilot and bears a boy named T.S. Garp (Robin Williams) whom she raises alone. When Garp grows up\, he has some success writing fiction\, but not nearly so much as his mother has with feminist-themed nonfiction. Rich and famous\, she starts a center for troubled women\, and while Garp marries and has children\, he remains a constant\, if somewhat critical\, observer of the strange community that forms around Jenny. Based on the best-selling book by John Irving\, The World According to Garp is a terrific adaptation that received two Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Glenn Close) and Best Supporting Actor (John Lithgow). \nAfter the film\, there will be a discussion led by George McGowan\, a 2012 graduate of Rollins College Master of Liberal Studies program\, who just happened to write his master’s program entrance essay on The World According to Garp. He also writes a monthly pop culture column for The Park Press. All of that is in his “spare” time since he is the Director of Audit at the City of Orlando and a husband to Janna and father to three kids in college. At this event\, George hopes to initiate a conversation about how a movie can deliver upon the promise of a very good novel and even enhance one’s understanding of the novel’s themes.
