Young’s elegant and absorbing documentary is a lively tour of New York’s book world\, populated by an assortment of obsessives\, intellects\, eccentrics and dreamers\, past and present: from the Park Avenue Armory’s annual Antiquarian Book Fair\, where original editions can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars; to the Strand and Argosy bookstores\, still standing against all odds; to the beautifully crammed apartments of collectors and buyers. The film\, executive produced by Parker Posey\, features a range of commentators\, including Fran Lebowitz\, Susan Orlean\, Gay Talese\, and a community of dedicated book dealers and collectors who strongly believe in the wonder of the object and what it holds within.

Their days punctuated by unfulfilling jobs\, they seek meaningful romantic and platonic connection. As they stumble through psychotherapy\, dating apps\, fainting spells\, and family visits\, the seemingly star-crossed duo orbit around each other but remain just out of reach. Klapisch spins a delicate “what-if” from their compartmentalization\, exploring our increasingly hermetic modern urban life.

Its conception began at a countercultural commune\, where an innovative group of artists\, adventurers\, and ecologists\, forged an alliance with a Texas oil scion to create Biosphere 2 as a pilot for Mars colonization. In 1991 their spectacular project became a media sensation\, when eight “biospherians” went to live hermetically sealed under the glass dome for two years. However\, shortly after their mission began\, the biospherians contended with ecological calamities—from food shortages to oxygen deprivation—and quickly the media’s fanfare turned to scorn. Cult accusations surfaced about the project’s management\, and Biosphere 2 was labeled science fiction\, instead of credible science. Director Matt Wolf trains his lens on this science-experiment-run-amok\, showcasing the team whose summer-of-love-spawned best intentions culminated in one of the most interesting disasters of the early 1990s.

Soon\, love is confronted with hate\, peace with violence\, sanity with madness\, and redemption with damnation. \nDirected by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Bartosz Konopka\, this genre-bending historical epic has been hailed as a “stunning showcase of experiential horror” (Bloody Disgusting) that “strikes with brutal clarity” (ScreenAnarchy).

There is a thread that runs through the city that can be heard from the drumming at Congo Square in the 1700’s through to today’s vibrant music scene. The music of this city is a powerful form of expression. It was a vehicle to communicate a desire for freedom\, express frustration of the injustices of segregation and Jim Crow laws\, a healing force that helped bring the city back from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina\, and is still a vital form of expression against ongoing cultural & racial biases. Executive Producer Terence Blanchard and Director Michael Murphy\, show how the culture of the city is reflected in its music\, how music impacts culture; and how even in the darkest of times\, music lifts and unites. \nFeaturing Sting\, Bonnie Raitt\, Robert Plant\, Keith Richards\, Harry Connick\, Jr.\, Wynton and Branford Marsalis\, Fats Domino\, Louis Armstrong\, Professor Longhair\, Allen Toussaint\, The Meters\, Dr. John\, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, Ivan Neville\, and many others!
