SUMMARY:Death Trip: The Films of Richard Kern
DESCRIPTION:In 1985\, the New York City ‘zine “The Underground Film Bulletin” published a manifesto credited to one “Orion Jeriko” that defined a new cinematic movement that would henceforth be know as “The Cinema of Transgression”.   The architects of this movement included a close nit group born of the lower-east side NoWave scene that included Nick Zedd (who used the alias of Jeriko to pen the article)\, poet/punk musician Lydia Lunch\, artist David Wojnarowicz\, and filmmakers Beth B\, Casandra Stark\, Tessa Hughes-Freeland\, Tommy Turner and Richard Kern.  Along for the ride were musical collaborators like Henry Rollins\, Sonic Youth and Foetus (J.G. Thrilwill).  Declaring that “nothing is sacred” they commanded that the violation of all that had come before was nothing less than the end game of their movement. \nThe Museum of Modern Art has called Richard Kern the “undisputed master of transgressive cinema: and a “hardcore social satirist”.  Kern is creator of some of most recognizable and often controversial films of the Cinema of Transgression.  Films that are at the extreme ends of a genre\, obsessed with perversion\, sadism\, and pitch black humor.  This collection of 10 films\, provided by Kern and preserved with the assistance of Anthology Film Archives and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts includes Kern’s first film Goodbye 42nd Street\, the Anthology Series Manhattan Love Suicides (with Nick Zedd) and his most controversial classic Fingered with co-creator Lydia Lunch. \nContent Warning: These films contain strong sexual content\, including violence\, nudity\, language\, and adult themes.  No one under 18 will be admitted. \n  \nGoodbye 42nd Street \n1983\, USA\, 5 minutes \nShots of walking down 42nd Street showing storefronts including everything from Texas Fried Chicken to 25 cent adult film arcades. \n  \nYou Killed Me First \n1985\, USA\, 12 minutes\, Featuring Karen Finley\, David Wojnarowicz\, Lung Leg with music by J.G. Thrilwell \nA young woman rebels against her family’s petit bourgeois respectability\, conservatism and religiosity. \n  \nDeath Valley ‘69 \n1986\, USA\, 7 minutes\, Featuring Sonic Youth\, Lydia Lunch\, Tommy Turner\, Lung Leg with music by Sonic Youth and Lydia Lunch. \nKern’s music video for Sonic Youth’s single “Death Valley ’69” \n  \nManhattan Love Suicides (Parts 1 – 4) \n1985\, USA\, 36 Minutes \n  \nStray Dogs (Part 1) \n1985\, USA\, 10 minutes\, Featuring David Wojnarowicz\, Bill Rice with music by J.G. Thrilwell \nA fan follows an artist home and tries to get his attention by literally coming apart. \n  \nWoman at the Wheel (Part 2) \n1985\, USA\, 8 minutes\, Featuring Adrienne Altenhaus\, Nick Zedd\, Gary Ray with music by J.G. Thrilwell and Wiseblood \nA woman takes each of her boyfriends – one poor and one rich- for a drive in her new car. \n  \nThrust in Me (Part 3) \n1985\, USA\, 8 minutes\, Directed and Written by R. SUMMARY:Cannibal Campout
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the Shot-on-Video era with a special VHS screening! \nJoin us for this special screening presented in conjunction with Terror Vision who will be introducing the film and hosting a table in the lobby with exclusive merchandise! \nThe late 1980s were the golden age for video rental stores\, as well as for homemade movies. Shot-on-video titles shared shelf space with Hollywood’s latest and greatest from coast to coast\, and in the midst of it all came standout Cannibal Campout from directors Tom Fisher and Jon McBride (Feeders)\, a film that pushed the boundaries of gritty realism and mind melting gore. \nAmy (Amy Chludzinski) and her friends break away from college for a weekend of camping in the peaceful New Jersey forest\, but they are not alone. Holding true to a bizarre promise to their dear\, departed mother\, a group of madmen besiege the vacationing quartet\, hellbent on torture and a feast of human flesh in Cannibal Campout.

SUMMARY:Robot Monster (in 3-D)
DESCRIPTION:It’s the end of the Hu-Man race as we know it! Alien visitor Ro-Man (regular gorilla impersonator George Barrows\, wearing a hairy ape suit and a deep-sea diving helmet)\, wipes out most of the Earth’s population with his “awesome calcinator death ray.” There are six survivors who have taken a neutralizing serum: a scientist\, a professor\, the professor’s wife\, and their three children. Ro-Man receives instructions from the leader of his planet\, “The Great One” (also played by Barrows)\, on how to kill the survivors\, but love gets in the way when Ro-Man falls for the professor’s comely eldest daughter. With echoes of King Kong\, Ro-Man’s lustful desire makes him want to be Hu-Man too\, and this will lead to his downfall. Made for a budget around $20\,000\, this cheapie camp classic just gets more ludicrous – and fun – with every sequence.  Part of the first wave of 3-D releases in early 1953\, Robot Monster’s excellent stereoscopic effects have been lovingly restored by 3-D Film Archive in honor of the movie’s 70th anniversary.

SUMMARY:Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Pride Month in the freakiest way possible\, with this overlooked\, chapter of early queer cinema! \nDropping somewhere between PINK FLAMINGOS\, BLOOD FEAST\, and an episode of THE BRADY BUNCH on acid\, SOMETIMES AUNT MARTHA DOES DREADFUL THINGS is a histrionic psychodrama that could only have originated in the alternate dimension known as Florida. After robbing a bank in Baltimore\, Paul (aka Aunt Martha) and his partner Stanley hide out in the Miami suburbs. But it’s only a matter of time before Paul’s paranoia forces him to embark on a demented killing spree. Hardly progressive\, even for its era\, the film is a remarkable curio as it was a production destined for the regional drive-in movie circuit and marketed as a crime drama.  What must audiences have thought as they watched two men (one dressed as a woman\, to avoid being recognized in public) spend 90 minutes arguing like an “old married couple” and sharing a single twin bed when there was a whole house up for grabs!?! The American Genre Film Archive is thrilled to present one of the most unforgettable exploitation movies of all time—preserved from the only 35mm theatrical print in existence.

SUMMARY:Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend
DESCRIPTION:For a long time\, Japanese animation had a bad rep in America: “those freaky violent cartoons with the schoolgirls and the tentacle monsters.” UROTSUKIDŌJI: THE LEGEND OF OVERFIEND is the film that’s largely responsible for this reputation. Hideki Takayama’s gruesome adaptation of Toshio Maeda’s horror comic had a brief stint in U.S. theaters rocking a well-earned NC-17 rating. Grim-faced and grotesque\, it’s a hellish Freudian vision of torn bodies\, and bitter pessimism. The apocalyptic film picks up just before the prophesied rise of the demon-god The Overfiend\, whose re-birth would merge the worlds of men and demons. As time of prophecy draws closer\, demons flood into the dimension of men\, throwing the Earth into a chaotic storm of sex and violence. \n  \nDue to graphic content\, including sexual assault\, no one under 18 will be admitted.

SUMMARY:Monster of Camp Sunshine
DESCRIPTION:“The motion picture that follows is a fable. In it there are many nudists but only one monster. In life\, it is generally the other way around.” \nShot by anonymous maniacs in New York\, this is a trash-art berserker that feels like what would happen if a 1980s slasher was teleported inside of a 1960s nudist film. A nurse and fashion model head to Camp Sunshine for a weekend of fun\, sun\, and cigarettes. But little do they know that Hugo\, the camp’s gardener\, has been transformed into an axe-wielding psychopath after drinking radioactive water! Combining experimental visuals with camp flair\, this is a crackpot time capsule featuring Monty Python-esque animation\, someone named Ron Cheney\, Jr.\, and\, at the end\, “a brief summary of the movie for those who wish to relive its magic moments.” Newly restored from the original 35mm negative!

SUMMARY:Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Russ Meyer’s 100th Birthday! \nIn 1970\, Twentieth Century-Fox\, impressed by the visual zing “King of the Nudies” Russ Meyer had been bringing to bargain-basement exploitation fare\, handed the director a studio budget and the title to one of its biggest hits\, Valley of the Dolls. With a satirical screenplay by Roger Ebert\, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls follows three young female rockers (Dolly Read\, Cynthia Myers\, Marcia McBroom) going Hollywood\, in hell-bent sixties style\, under the spell of a flamboyant producer—whose decadent bashes showcase Meyer’s trademark libidinal exuberance. Transgressive and outrageous\, this big-studio version of a debaucherous midnight movie is an addictively entertaining romp from one of cinema’s great outsider artists.

SUMMARY:The Shining: Forwards and Backwards
DESCRIPTION:Immortalized in Rodney Asher’s documentary ROOM 237\, THE SHINING: FORWARDS AND BACKWARDS is a masterwork of experimental video manipulation. John Fell Ryan and Akiva Saunders’ hallucinatory palindromic love letter to Kubrick’s finely tuned symmetric compositions. Created in 2011\, Ryan explained “we put the US DVD version into Final Cut\, removed all corporate logos and leaders at the beginning\, and cut all credits at the end. The entire film image sequence was then copied\, reversed\, and superimposed over the original forwards version.” What results is a mesmerizing acid trip experience of uncanny coincidences (or perhaps like the ‘satanic panic’ of the 1980s\, secret hidden messages when played in reverse) wherein the images and themes contained in Kubrick’s film are at times contradictory and complimentary to the story being told.  In short\, this is THE SHINING as you have never seen it (or dreamed it) before. Join us on this rare journey into the literal and figurative fracturing of cinematic sanity and get ready to get freaky!

SUMMARY:Blood Rage
DESCRIPTION:Todd and Terry are twin bros with twin problems — namely\, one of them is an axe-wielding maniac! After a literal drive-in massacre\, Todd is blamed for the carnage and institutionalized\, while Terry goes free. Ten years later\, Todd escapes from an asylum on Thanksgiving aka it’s time for blood to raaaaage!!  Produced by whip-smart filmmaker/actress Maryanne Kantor\, directed by John Grissmer (SCALPEL)\, and shot in Jacksonville\, Florida in 1983 for the drive-in theater circuit\, but not released until 1987\, BLOOD RAGE is what happens when you combine Thanksgiving\, 1970s-star Louise Lasser (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM\, BANANAS)\, a killer synth score\, and the most unbelievable gore effects in all of slasherdom\, courtesy of Ed French (TERMINATOR 2). Just remember\, “It’s not cranberry sauce!”

SUMMARY:Deadbeat at Dawn
DESCRIPTION:“Jim Van Bebber’s shot-on-16mm masterpiece came careening out of Dayton\, Ohio in 1988 like a runaway lawnmower blade\, setting the standard for all nihilist street-gang movies to follow. Visceral\, unspeakably violent\, and fearless\, Van Bebber could have easily lost his life making this film. You may lose yours watching it.” — Austin Film Society \nShot over the course of 4 years using his college tuition—an absolute definition of DIY filmmaking—DEADBEAT AT DAWN is a cult classic that deserves the moniker — an indie revenge movie with more thrills and bloody spills than all of Chuck Norris’ films combined. ‘80s visionary wunderkind Jim Van Bebber wrote\, directed\, did stunts and makeup FX for and starred in this raucous tale of Goose: a former gang leader whose girlfriend is slaughtered when he leaves the thug life behind. As he’s pulled back into the gang during an uneasy alliance\, Goose exacts his head-crushing revenge… You will not believe your eyes when you see Van Bebber giving 1\,000% during every frame of this film.

SUMMARY:Miami Connection
DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate 35th Anniversary of the greatest cult classic ever shot in Orlando! \n“bikers by day\, ninjas by night\, steal all your cocaine\, along with your life” \nDirected by 9th-degree black belt/philosopher/author/inspirational speaker Grandmaster Y.K. Kim\, the one-of-a-kind MIAMI CONNECTION is one of the most entertaining martial arts films you will see made on American soil. Ever. The year is 1987. Motorcycle ninjas tighten their grip on Florida’s narcotics trade\, annihilating anyone who dares move in on their turf. Multi-national martial arts rock band Dragon Sound have had enough\, and embark on a roundhouse wreck-wave of crime-crushing justice in the streets of Orlando. It’ll take every ounce of their blood and courage\, but Dragon Sound can’t stop until they’ve completely destroyed the dealers\, the drunk bikers\, the kill-crazy ninjas\, the middle-aged thugs\, the “stupid cocaine” . . . and the entire MIAMI CONNECTION. \nCourtesy of the American Genre Film Archive.

SUMMARY:Forbidden Zone
DESCRIPTION:During the late 70 s Richard Elfman and his younger brother Danny got together with fellow musician friends and formed a theater group known as The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo . They performed inventive and bizarre avant-garde stage shows\, written by Danny and featuring twisted versions of Cab Callaway music and original compositions (also written by Danny). Richard wanted to capture the energy of the stage shows on film\, and the end result is Forbidden Zone\, released in 1980 and featuring Danny s music with the Mystic Knights\, and one of the most twisted stories you’ll ever see in a motion picture. It involves the kooky Hercules family\, who live in a house that has a basement\, which leads into the mysterious Sixth Dimension. What follows features nearly constant musical numbers\, a dwarf king (Hervé “DA PLANE!” Villechaize)\, a giant frog butler\, the freaky introvert Chicken Boy \, and a crooning Danny Elfman as the devil himself. Take The Rocky Horror Picture Show as imagined by David Lynch and John Waters\, while smoking LSD and listening to an Oingo Boingo record. Shake well. Forbidden Zone is the flashy trashy freaky result.

SUMMARY:Nude on the Moon
DESCRIPTION:“NUDE ON THE MOON represents everything that’s perfect about American pop culture. Exploitation legend Doris Wishman’s second feature…less a movie than a catalog of pure kitsch delirium. Stupid to the point of breathtaking\, NUDE ON THE MOON is also one of the most enjoyable examples the long-extinct ‘nudie-cutie’. \nCrew-cut hunk Jeff uses a $3 million inheritance to build a spaceship for he and his pal “The Professor”. They blast off in one rocket (a little toy model)\, and land on the moon in another (also a toy model). Donning hilarious red and green pajama-like suits that make them look like wacky superheroes\, the two exit the ship to discover a Miami-like tropical paradise. And\, yes\, yes\, they also discover a nudist camp right there on the lunar surface\, populated by naked moon people. You can tell they’re moon people because they have pipe-cleaner antennas on their heads. \nThe Queen of the Moon speaks telepathically and carries a magic wand which renders humans dizzy. She’s also a dead ringer for Jeff’s secretary back home\, which\, inexplicably\, neither Jeff nor the Professor seem to notice. \nBilled here as ‘Anthony Brooks\,’ you can spot pioneering director Doris walking across the screen in the film’s very first shot!” (Frank Henenlotter)

SUMMARY:THE F13TH FAN FILM MIXTAPE
DESCRIPTION:In the 1980s and 90s\, no psychopathic maniac was more popular than Jason Voorhees. AGFA and Bleeding Skull! are proud to present THE F13TH FAN FILM MIXTAPE — an awe-inspiring compilation of the best-of-the-best in DIY Voorhees tributes from Jason’s biggest fans. Underage driving! Cameos from Michael Myers! Illegal usage of songs by The Beastie Boys! SUMMARY:Reefer Madness
DESCRIPTION:Perfect for any blazin’ occasion\, this landmark propaganda gigglefest is back in a new 2K presentation also featuring vintage trailers\, commercials\, and ephemera from the AGFA vaults! \nREEFER MADNESS is one of the first unintentional cinematic gutbusters\, a proto-noir melodrama so preposterous it’s like a transmission from Mars. Originally an Afterschool Special for the tent revival set\, a modern REEFER viewing is a hilarious romp through the American establishment’s bottomless paranoia — proving how far we’ve come\, and how far we’ve yet to go. \nFor eighty years since its creation\, this seminal cult classic has captured the imaginations of stoners\, curiosity seekers and movie maniacs. SUMMARY:Spider Baby
DESCRIPTION:The first solo feature from exploitation legend Jack Hill (FOXY BROWN)\, SPIDER BABY remains one of the wildest and weirdest horror films of the 1960s. The credits dub this “the maddest story ever told\,” a promise that’s well on the way to being fulfilled in the opening scene alone\, when Virginia traps and kills a hapless deliveryman in her makeshift web. She’s one of three siblings\, including exploitation wild man Sid Haig\, who suffer from a unique genetic disorder that causes them to regress back to childhood while retaining the physical strength and sexual maturity of adults. Lon Chaney\, Jr. (THE WOLF MAN) gives one of his most memorable late performances as Bruno\, who manages to cover up the crimes of the “kids” until two distant relatives lay claim to their house. Blending elements of gothic horror and gallows humor\, SPIDER BABY drops somewhere between THE ADDAMS FAMILY and THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE.

SUMMARY:Tetsuo: The Iron Man
DESCRIPTION:Virtually absent from theater screens since the 1990s\, this underground classic from Japan is now available in a brand new restoration! TETSUO: THE IRON MAN is filmmaker Shinya Tsukamoto’s unhinged hot take on humankind’s ongoing battle with technology; literally\, as a man mutates into a walking\, clanking man-machine that terrorizes himself and everyone around him. Warping elements of early Cronenberg\, Lynch\, and Raimi into a deliriously-paced cyberpunk cocktail\, TETSUO is a body horror manifesto that’s fueled by techno-erotic adrenaline and wrought iron perversion. Unmissable.
