SUMMARY:Weirdo: The Story of Five Eight
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Filmmaker:  Live in-person Q&A with the members of Five Eight\, Producers Jackie Schoknecht\, Geoff Melkonian and Director Marc Pilvinsky in conversation with acclaimed musician Tierney Tough (The Pauses). \nAfter being institutionalized for schizophrenia and manic-depression in his early 20s\, Mike Mantione turned to songwriting as a way of dealing with his demons. For 30 years\, loud guitars have kept those demons at bay. \nThe band’s whirlwind tale is primarily told through the voices of its own current band members—Mantione\, guitarist Sean Dunn\, bassist Dan Horowitz and drummer Patrick Ferguson—who are able to look back on both their successes and shortcomings with humor\, acceptance and remarkable tenderness towards each other. Outside perspectives are offered from friends and contemporaries such as Bill Berry (R.E.M.)\, Amy Ray (Indigo Girls)\, Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers)\, Vanessa Briscoe Hay (Pylon Reenactment Society)\, David Barbe (Mercyland) and Velena Vego (40 Watt Club). \nMeet the Filmmaker – Five Eight \n \nAthens\, GA band Five Eight was the vehicle of singer/guitarist Mike Mantione\, a self-professed manic depressive whose music exorcised his personal demons in grim detail. Debuting in 1989 with the self-released Passive-Aggressive cassette\, the band — which also comprised longtime bassist Dan Horowitz\, guitarist Sean Dunn and drummer Patrick ‘”Tigger'” Ferguson — resurfaced two years later with Inflatable Sense of Self. Signing to the Sky label\, in 1992 Five Eight issued their first full-length CD\, I Learned Shut Up\, releasing The Angriest Man a year later; however\, after 1994’s Weirdo\, the group spent the mid-1990s largely out of the spotlight\, finally returning in 1997 with the Ed Stasium-produced Gasolina! That winter both Dunn and Ferguson abruptly left the lineup\, and with new drummer Mike Rizzi\, Five Eight issued 1999’s “The Road Beat the Shit Out of My Favorite Band\,” a split single with Clemente. The full-length The Good Nurse followed on Deep Elm in the spring of 2000. Five Eight returned in 2004 with a self-titled CD\, the first to be released by the band itself.

SUMMARY:Nosferatu With Radiohead: A Silents Synced Film
DESCRIPTION:Encore Screening! \nIf there’s one thing that classic silent films are desperately missing\, it’s the screeching sound of electric guitars. The brainchild of Josh Frank\, an Austin\, Texas drive-in theater owner\, Silents Synced is a series of cinematic/music mashups that will leave even fans of the legendary Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon phenomenon shocked with delight. \nThe inaugural film in this series couples F.W. Murnau’s century old masterpiece Nosferatu (1922) with genre-undefinable alt rock band Radiohead’s mind-blowing “Kid A” (2000) and “Amnesiac” (2001) albums. \nCreated exclusively for independent cinemas\, Enzian Theater is thrilled to bring this unique event to our Music Mondays series.

SUMMARY:35000 Watts: The Story of College Radio
DESCRIPTION:Come early to hear Cody Mathewson with James Hall play live music at Eden Bar from 6:30-9:30PM\, courtesy of Performing Arts Matter! \n35000 WATTS charts the wild journey of visionaries and rebels on college campuses across America who changed the course of music history and made an indelible imprint on our culture. \nIt’s the story of the youth and music culture that originated\, and later flourished\, on the airwaves of American colleges and universities\, establishing a new generational voice and a new path to success for many alumni and artists like R.E.M. SONIC YOUTH\, THE REPLACEMENTS\, and the B-52s. \nHighlighting an era where college radio’s influence was at its peak\, the film examines its humble beginnings and how it evolved to create hugely impactful experiences for local and regional communities\, students finding their voice\, and the musicians seeking their shot at hitting it big. \nThe film dives deep into the music that was the heart of college radio programming\, exploring the symbiotic relationship between artists creating music that did not fit into commercial radio formats and the student-run radio stations that were more than happy to play it. The film features interviews with iconic big-name acts including Mark Mothersbaugh (DEVO)\, Joey Santiago (THE PIXIES)\, Allison Wolfe (BRATMOBILE) plus THE TOADIES\, APPLES IN STEREO and many smaller regional bands who lived their rock-and-roll dream for a short while\, as well as discussions with former college radio alumni who spin on about their role in college radio and why college radio is still relevant in today’s media-saturated landscape. \nFull of music\, humor\, and energy\, 35000 WATTS: THE STORY OF COLLEGE RADIO is an electrifying journey through an aspect of American culture that is often overlooked but has made an undeniably loud impact on society. \n2024\, 72 minutes\, Directed by Michael Millard\, Unrated \nPreceded by \nWPRK: The Documentary \n  \nWPRK has been serving the greater Orlando community since 1952. From talk shows and punk rock to world music and heated political debates. The number 91.5 on your FM dial exemplifies what non-commercial radio is all about: broadcasting what people want to listen to. With more than 80 weekly shows\, WPRK broadcasts the best in basement radio 24/7 all year long.  This documentary looks at the history of WPRK including Dave Plotkin’s 2005 Guiness World Record attempt at the “Longest on-air broadcast by a single DJ”. \n2014\, 17 minutes\, Directed by John Berggren\, Rich Higgins and Drew Henner

SUMMARY:Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex
DESCRIPTION:A pioneer of the glam-rock movement and an early champion of punk\, Marc Bolan was always ahead of the curve. This was both an advantage and a stumbling block for the mop-headed T. Rex bandleader\, whose unique approach to pop songcraft is highlighted in Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan and T. Rex. Providing intimate access to both those who knew Bolan best and the musicians profoundly impacted by his work\, Angelheaded Hipster combines archival footage from Bolan’s life with a behind the scenes look at the 2020 tribute album of the same name\, including performances from U2\, Billy Idol\, Joan Jett\, Ringo Starr\, Nick Cave\, Beth Orton\, Macy Gray\, Father John Misty\, and Elton John.

SUMMARY:Pavement: Louder Than You Think
DESCRIPTION:An up-close cinematic walkabout through the life of Gary Young\, the original (and highly unlikely) drummer of indie rock royalty PAVEMENT. His booze and drugs-fueled antics (on-stage handstands\, gifting vegetables to fans) and haphazard production methods (accidentally helping launch the lo-fi aesthetic) were both a driving force of the band’s early rise and the cause of his eventual crash landing. Leaving a wake of joy and/or destruction at every turn\, Gary teeters the thin line between free-form self-expression and chaotic self-destruction. Thirty years on with scoliosis\, blood clots\, and a shriveled liver\, Gary is still drumming with no regrets. \nNote: no puppets were harmed in the making of this film.

SUMMARY:Who Can See Forever: A Portrait of Iron & Wine
DESCRIPTION:Who Can See Forever is the first ever in-depth look into the life and music of Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam. Initially conceived as a live document\, Who Can See Forever grew into a deeper study of its enigmatic subject as director Josh Sliffe spent more and more time on the road. Shot over the course of three years and using the traditional concert film as his jumping-off point\, Sliffe digs into the myth and ethos of Iron & Wine through a series of interviews and unguarded behind-the-scenes footage that welcome the viewer into the center of Beam’s universe. The film broke ground during a particularly creative period wherein Iron & Wine released back-to-back Grammy nominated records and were in the midst of a three-year touring cycle. The concert film is drawn from a two night-stand at the historic Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw\, North Carolina and features bassist Sebastian Steinberg (Fiona Apple\, Soul Coughing)\, drummer Elizabeth Goodfellow (Allison Russell\, Better Oblivion Community Center)\, cellist Teddy Rankin-Parker and keyboardist Eliza Hardy-Jones (War on Drugs\, Grace Potter). The shows were performed in-the-round for a once in a lifetime experience and the live performances pull from the entirety of Iron & Wine’s 20-plus year career. Who Can See Forever manages to serve as part concert film\, part music documentary and part meditative examination as it captures one of independent music’s most prolific singer-songwriters.

SUMMARY:In the Court of the Crimson King: King Crimson at 50
DESCRIPTION:King Crimson is a band that people literally are dying to be in. In the Court of the Crimson King is a dark\, comic film for anyone who wonders whether it is worth sacrificing everything for just a single moment of transcendence. For over 50 years Robert Fripp\, also famous for his work with Bowie and Eno\, has overseen a unique creative environment in which freedom and responsibility conspire to place extraordinary demands on the band’s members – only alleviated by the applause of an audience whose adoration threatens to make their lives even harder. It’s a rewarding and perilous space in which the extraordinary is possible\, nothing is certain\, and not everyone survives intact.

SUMMARY:Getting it Back: The Story of Cymande
DESCRIPTION:Special Juneteenth Event \n Join us for live music by John Lee Wyatt at Eden Bar from 6:30-9:30PM\, courtesy of Performing Arts Matter! \n  \nThey’re the greatest band you’ve never heard of… \nThe British group Cymande are unsung heroes whose message of peace\, love and funk sailed beyond Britain’s shores and helped shape music for five decades. Long after they stopped playing\, the music played on\, so they returned to play some more. \nIn the racially turbulent UK of the early 70s\, a group of black musicians came together in South London with a common love of rhythms and a message of peace. Cymande – with the dove as their symbol – combined jazz\, funk\, soul and Caribbean grooves to form a unique sound. Despite success in the USA they faced indifference in their native Britain\, becoming disillusioned and disbanding. But the music lived on\, as new generations of artists imbibed and reworked their pioneering sounds in fresh ways. From Soul II Soul to De La Soul\, MC Solaar to The Fugees\, the Dove had spread Cymande‘s message far and wide\, prompting their return after forty years. This is their story.

SUMMARY:What the Hell Happened to Blood\, Sweat\, & Tears?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Meet the Filmmaker event\, with a talkback featuring Karen Vock (Crew Neck Productions) about their work on the film. \nIn 1970\, Blood\, Sweat and Tears was one of the biggest bands in the world. They had exploded on the scene with both daring and promise\, selling millions of records\, winning multiple Grammy Awards including Album of the Year (beating out The Beatles’ Abbey Road) and headlining the legendary Woodstock festival. In demand for concert and TV appearances\, BS&T was a darling of the mainstream and rock press\, icon of the counterculture and inspiration for a generation of horn-based bands. Their future was limitless. And then it all went wrong. Created with the full cooperation of Blood\, Sweat and Tears\, this feature documentary will overflow with great music\, international political intrigue\, compelling human moments\, humor and fresh insight into this strange never-before-told story of a tangle with the Nixon administration\, a controversial tour behind the Iron Curtain that put them in the crossfire of a polarized America and a lost tour documentary that might just explain it all.

SUMMARY:Punk Rock Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:Come early to hear live music at Eden Bar from 6:30-9:30PM\, courtesy of Performing Arts Matter! \nJoin us for a night of Punk Rock history featuring: “Nightclubbing: The Birth of Punk Rock in NYC” about the formation of the NYC Punk Rock scene at legendary New York City nightclub Max’s Kansas City.  And\, a special bonus short film; “Sid: The Final Curtain” about the last live performance of the Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious featuring rare live footage and exclusive interviews from those who witnessed it. \n“Nightclubbing: The Birth of Punk Rock in NYC” is the first-ever documentary about the renowned New York City nightclub Max’s Kansas City (1965-1981) which had an indelible impact on the worlds of music\, fashion\, art\, culture and the creation of the city’s Punk Rock scene.  As legendary singer and Max’s veteran Alice Cooper — who signed his contract with Warner Bros. Records at the club — says\, “A million ideas were launched back there.” He’s referring to Max’s Kansas City’s famous back room\, where Andy Warhol held court and artists\, actors\, filmmakers\, models\, writers\, assorted criminals and countless musicians — from Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground to David Bowie and the New York Dolls — made an indelible mark on music and the world. Max’s was also an early safe haven for the city’s LGBTQ crowd including Candy Darling\, Holly Woodlawn\, Jackie Curtis and presided over by transsexual DJ Wayne / Jayne County.  Max’s is where David Bowie first met Iggy Pop — who ended up bloody and being taken to the hospital (by Alice Cooper) after a particularly lively performance. It’s where Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious played his last shows\, backed by members of the New York Dolls and The Clash. It’s where Aerosmith and Bruce Springsteen were signed to Columbia Records by Clive Davis; where Bob Marley and the Wailers played their first American shows; where Debbie Harry waitressed; where the fledgling Beastie Boys first fought for their right to party; where Madonna first got an early taste of the city’s nightclub scene. Sex and drugs weren’t only commonplace in the bathrooms\, but in the entire club.
