SUMMARY:Who Can See Forever: A Portrait of Iron & Wine
DESCRIPTION:Who Can See Forever is the first ever in-depth look into the life and music of Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam. Initially conceived as a live document\, Who Can See Forever grew into a deeper study of its enigmatic subject as director Josh Sliffe spent more and more time on the road. Shot over the course of three years and using the traditional concert film as his jumping-off point\, Sliffe digs into the myth and ethos of Iron & Wine through a series of interviews and unguarded behind-the-scenes footage that welcome the viewer into the center of Beam’s universe. The film broke ground during a particularly creative period wherein Iron & Wine released back-to-back Grammy nominated records and were in the midst of a three-year touring cycle. The concert film is drawn from a two night-stand at the historic Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw\, North Carolina and features bassist Sebastian Steinberg (Fiona Apple\, Soul Coughing)\, drummer Elizabeth Goodfellow (Allison Russell\, Better Oblivion Community Center)\, cellist Teddy Rankin-Parker and keyboardist Eliza Hardy-Jones (War on Drugs\, Grace Potter). The shows were performed in-the-round for a once in a lifetime experience and the live performances pull from the entirety of Iron & Wine’s 20-plus year career. Who Can See Forever manages to serve as part concert film\, part music documentary and part meditative examination as it captures one of independent music’s most prolific singer-songwriters.

SUMMARY:In the Court of the Crimson King: King Crimson at 50
DESCRIPTION:King Crimson is a band that people literally are dying to be in. In the Court of the Crimson King is a dark\, comic film for anyone who wonders whether it is worth sacrificing everything for just a single moment of transcendence. For over 50 years Robert Fripp\, also famous for his work with Bowie and Eno\, has overseen a unique creative environment in which freedom and responsibility conspire to place extraordinary demands on the band’s members – only alleviated by the applause of an audience whose adoration threatens to make their lives even harder. It’s a rewarding and perilous space in which the extraordinary is possible\, nothing is certain\, and not everyone survives intact.

SUMMARY:Mutiny in Heaven: Nick Cave’s The Birthday Party
DESCRIPTION:Narrated exclusively by the original band members\, Mutiny in Heaven delves deep into a band’s psyche\, chronicling how Nick Cave and his school friends startled audiences with their confrontational performances\, primal screams\, outlaw gothic horror\, and anarchic lifestyle. Featuring never-before-seen personal footage from band members\, dynamic animation sequences\, and jaw-dropping concert clips\, the film provides a sweaty\, electrifying front-row seat to one of the most legendary live acts. It’s destined to be an instant documentary classic. The film is the first fully authorized telling of The Birthday Party.

SUMMARY:Getting it Back: The Story of Cymande
DESCRIPTION:Special Juneteenth Event \n Join us for live music by John Lee Wyatt at Eden Bar from 6:30-9:30PM\, courtesy of Performing Arts Matter! \n  \nThey’re the greatest band you’ve never heard of… \nThe British group Cymande are unsung heroes whose message of peace\, love and funk sailed beyond Britain’s shores and helped shape music for five decades. Long after they stopped playing\, the music played on\, so they returned to play some more. \nIn the racially turbulent UK of the early 70s\, a group of black musicians came together in South London with a common love of rhythms and a message of peace. Cymande – with the dove as their symbol – combined jazz\, funk\, soul and Caribbean grooves to form a unique sound. Despite success in the USA they faced indifference in their native Britain\, becoming disillusioned and disbanding. But the music lived on\, as new generations of artists imbibed and reworked their pioneering sounds in fresh ways. From Soul II Soul to De La Soul\, MC Solaar to The Fugees\, the Dove had spread Cymande‘s message far and wide\, prompting their return after forty years. This is their story.

SUMMARY:What the Hell Happened to Blood\, Sweat\, & Tears?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Meet the Filmmaker event\, with a talkback featuring Karen Vock (Crew Neck Productions) about their work on the film. \nIn 1970\, Blood\, Sweat and Tears was one of the biggest bands in the world. They had exploded on the scene with both daring and promise\, selling millions of records\, winning multiple Grammy Awards including Album of the Year (beating out The Beatles’ Abbey Road) and headlining the legendary Woodstock festival. In demand for concert and TV appearances\, BS&T was a darling of the mainstream and rock press\, icon of the counterculture and inspiration for a generation of horn-based bands. Their future was limitless. And then it all went wrong. Created with the full cooperation of Blood\, Sweat and Tears\, this feature documentary will overflow with great music\, international political intrigue\, compelling human moments\, humor and fresh insight into this strange never-before-told story of a tangle with the Nixon administration\, a controversial tour behind the Iron Curtain that put them in the crossfire of a polarized America and a lost tour documentary that might just explain it all.

SUMMARY:Punk Rock Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:Come early to hear live music at Eden Bar from 6:30-9:30PM\, courtesy of Performing Arts Matter! \nJoin us for a night of Punk Rock history featuring: “Nightclubbing: The Birth of Punk Rock in NYC” about the formation of the NYC Punk Rock scene at legendary New York City nightclub Max’s Kansas City.  And\, a special bonus short film; “Sid: The Final Curtain” about the last live performance of the Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious featuring rare live footage and exclusive interviews from those who witnessed it. \n“Nightclubbing: The Birth of Punk Rock in NYC” is the first-ever documentary about the renowned New York City nightclub Max’s Kansas City (1965-1981) which had an indelible impact on the worlds of music\, fashion\, art\, culture and the creation of the city’s Punk Rock scene.  As legendary singer and Max’s veteran Alice Cooper — who signed his contract with Warner Bros. Records at the club — says\, “A million ideas were launched back there.” He’s referring to Max’s Kansas City’s famous back room\, where Andy Warhol held court and artists\, actors\, filmmakers\, models\, writers\, assorted criminals and countless musicians — from Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground to David Bowie and the New York Dolls — made an indelible mark on music and the world. Max’s was also an early safe haven for the city’s LGBTQ crowd including Candy Darling\, Holly Woodlawn\, Jackie Curtis and presided over by transsexual DJ Wayne / Jayne County.  Max’s is where David Bowie first met Iggy Pop — who ended up bloody and being taken to the hospital (by Alice Cooper) after a particularly lively performance. It’s where Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious played his last shows\, backed by members of the New York Dolls and The Clash. It’s where Aerosmith and Bruce Springsteen were signed to Columbia Records by Clive Davis; where Bob Marley and the Wailers played their first American shows; where Debbie Harry waitressed; where the fledgling Beastie Boys first fought for their right to party; where Madonna first got an early taste of the city’s nightclub scene. Sex and drugs weren’t only commonplace in the bathrooms\, but in the entire club.

SUMMARY:Let There Be Drums!
DESCRIPTION:Taylor Hawkins Tribute \nCome early to hear live music at Eden Bar from 6:30-9:30PM\, courtesy of Performing Arts Matter! \nAfter the Grateful Dead’s final 50th anniversary shows in 2015\, filmmaker Justin Kreutzmann (son of the Dead’s drummer\, Bill Kreutzmann) realized that\, for the first time\, he and his dad could forge a relationship outside the shadow of the band. This inspired Justin to sit down with the world’s greatest drummers\, in the hopes of better understanding both his father and the instrument that has defined his life. Along the way\, “Let There Be Drums!” examines the personal struggles that so many of these musicians and their families have faced\, the nature of how music passes from generation to generation\, and the essential role that drumming plays in human life. With: Taylor Hawkins\, Stewart Copeland\, Keith Moon\, Chad Smith\, Don Was\, John Densmore\, John Bonham\, Steven Adler and many more…

Sheila E\, Boni Boyer and Cat provide rhythmic\, vocal and physical pyrotechnics while Sheena Easton appears in a film within a film\, her rock video “U Got the Look.” \nIn constant motion\, never far from center stage\, is Prince\, Minnesota’s charismatic virtuoso\, giving the performance of a lifetime.

SUMMARY:Moby Doc
DESCRIPTION:Come early to hear live music by Cat Ridgeway at Eden Bar from 6:30-9:30PM\, courtesy of Performing Arts Matter! \nWith his first electronic single\, “Go\,” in 1991\, Moby helped define the music of an era\, and the mega-success of his 1999 album Play — and its soulful\, infectious songs’ presence in clubs\, films\, ads\, and on TV — brought him into the stratosphere of fame when it became the biggest-selling electronic album of all time. But just a few years earlier\, he was living in an abandoned building\, making remixes and trying to make sense of a disruptive\, dark childhood. By 2008\, alcohol and drug use overwhelmed him\, and despite massive success he considered suicide — until a 12-Step program\, music\, and animal activism grounded him. A former philosophy student\, he wondered: If he got everything he wanted…why wasn’t he happy? \nMOBY DOC is the creative\, offbeat\, wry\, music-filled chronicle of an eventful life examined. Filled with existential discussions\, extraordinary concert footage\, deep cuts from 30 years of Moby’s music\, unconventional narrative\, quirky animation\, rare clips\, and thoughts from Moby’s friend David Lynch\, it’s a vibrant\, eclectic conversation between a man and his past. Moby delves into himself to share with radical honesty what he’s gone through\, and why the answers to some of the deepest questions we can ask as human beings may not be found in the way we’re actually living.

No matter how messy\, beginnings are exciting. Especially when what happens next endures the test of time. For Devo\, the beginning happened in the basements and garages of Akron\, Ohio. The songs they wrote were raw and unfiltered with no commercial intent. They called it Hardcore Devo. Performing 21 oddities\, this is a tribute to departed\, original Devo bandmate\, Robert “Bob 2” Casale. Filmed live on June 28\, 2014 at the Fox Theater in Oakland\, California.
