And rightly so\, because in Norma Italian Romanticism reached its pinnacle. \nThis production\, by award-winning American stage director Kevin Newbury\, stresses the ritual aspects of the drama. Norma is a classical heroine\, passionate and revengeful\, and her dilemma provides the starting point for the most successful work by the last and greatest composer of bel canto. Though the first performance was a failure\, Norma went on to become an established favorite. It first came to the Liceu in 1847\, not long after its official opening\, and was\, in fact\, the third opera to be staged there.

Unbeknownst to the young bride\, this officer is looking merely for a marriage of convenience. She falls promptly and swiftly in love\, even converting to Christianity in order to be a better wife. Yet\, storm clouds gather on the horizon: at the wedding\, an uninvited guest curses the couple. \nPinkerton leaves\, and Cio-Cio San is left alone to bear his child. Suzuki\, Cio-Cio San’s maid\, insists that the officer will never return\, but Butterfly will not believe it. Her faith is seemingly justified one day when Pinkerton’s ship indeed sails into the harbour. \nHowever\, Pinkerton has brought an American wife with him\, and Butterfly is expected to give up her child. She agrees to do so\, but only if he comes in person to see her. He arrives to find that she has committed ritual suicide with her father’s knife. \nThe most loved aria from this opera is ‘Un bel di vedremo\,’ sung by Butterfly as she pines for Pinkerton’s return.

Please make sure to have your confirmation number ready to provide to the box officer at time of your reservation. \nMaurice Béjart’s compelling staging of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony has been enchanting audiences worldwide since its inception and its idea of universal brotherhood remains highly topical. “Alle Menschen werden Brüder” (All men will be brothers) is the powerful message communicated by the unforgettable music and choreography. \nFrom the stage of the NHK Hall in Tokyo\, 250 dancers and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta send this message out into the world. “It is a ‘manifestation’\, in the deepest sense of the word.” Maurice Béjart. \nAlthough the ballet was planned purely as an interpretation of Beethoven’s music\, Béjart added texts from Nietzsche\, Schiller and others to the programme notes. These texts underline the major theme of universal brotherhood\, a union of races and peoples culminating with the 4th movement’s ‘Ode to Joy’ and that “All men become brothers.”

Not if Calixto Bieito has any say in the matter. The shocking\, outrage-inducing director whose surprise-packed productions can be relied upon to attract attention is a welcome guest at Hamburg State Opera. His most recent venture is a staging of Verdi’s comic opera Falstaff\, which Bieito reinterprets as an apocalyptic satire on entertainment and prototype scenario of modern society. Bieito’s take on Falstaff is a black comedy that exposes the tragicomic aspect of human existence. He casts the eponymous hero of the piece as a charismatic and perverse pleasure-seeker\, a melancholy – and corpulent – bon vivant\, whose provocations hold up a mirror to our society. \nFalstaff is Verdi’s last work for the stage and as such his testament. By the time he composed it he had long since broken free of convention and no longer cared what the world thought of him. Falstaff shows us Verdi the tragedian smiling wisely as he takes his final bow. The opera even ends with the words “Tutto nel mondo è burla” – “All the world’s a joke”. Yet there is nothing bitter about this message. \nThe new Hamburg production boasts a world-class cast with Ambrogio Maestri – “a Falstaff for our times” – in the title role and Maija Kovalevska as Alice Ford.

Please make sure to have your confirmation number ready to provide to the box officer at time of your reservation. \nIn his rendering of the dreamiest\, most sumptuous of ballets\, perhaps the ballet par excellence\, Nureyev maintained the incredible purity of Petipa’s original choreography\, just as he had learned it at the Kirov\, but infused it with a fresh sense of theatrical drama and inner strength through remarkable variations and an articulated choreographic composition that reveals all of the characters’ psychological nuances. Indeed\, it was to La Scala in 1966 that Nureyev entrusted the debut of “his” Sleeping Beauty\, and now\, twelve years after its last performance\, his masterpiece returns to the stage with the magnificent sets created by Oscar winner Franca Squarciapino at La Scala in 1993\, and Felix Korobov conducting the extraordinary score by Tchaikovsky.

Please make sure to have your confirmation number ready to provide to the box officer at time of your reservation. \nThe 2019-2020 season opened with the diva of the 21st century\, Anna Netrebko\, in Tosca\, one of Puccini’s most “cinematic” operas and often described as a “thriller”. \nRiccardo Chailly proposed for this Tosca a critical version that included a few lines that Puccini had prepared for the world premiere of the opera in 1900 but were left out at the time. The production\, directed by Davide Livermore in cooperation with set designer Giò Forma chose a traditional setting\, and with the help of rotating parts of the stage\, which could also be elevated to show the action taking place on two different levels\, was able to create a wider space that could contain the side naves of the church of Sant’Andrea della Valle with the Attavanti chapel and the central altar in act one or the torture room below Scarpia’s office in act one. \nIn the title role\, soprano Anna Netrebko\, now at her third opening in five seasons\, was a magnificent Tosca. Her performance literally brought down the house. At her side\, tenor Francesco Meli lent his ringing voice to Cavaradossi. Luca Salsi played a compelling Scarpia\, evil minded and sneaky at the right point. A real luxury cast was bass-baritone Alfonso Antoniozzi in the role of the sacristan.

Marius Petipa choreographed this sparkling ballet about the encounters of the man from La Mancha and his faithful squire Sancho Panza. At its heart are virtuoso roles for the lovers Basilio and Kitri. Carlos Acosta chose this joyful classic for his first production for The Royal Ballet. With his librettist\, Francesco Maria Piave\, Verdi set out to create ‘something out of the ordinary’. Their success is borne out in every bar of a score that sees Verdi at his most theatrical: it bristles with demonic energy. \nThe warrior Macbeth fights on the side of the King of Scotland – but when a coven of witches prophesy that he shall become king himself\, a ruthless ambition drives Macbeth and his wife to horrific acts. \nMurder makes Macbeth king\, and intrigue and butchery are the hallmarks of his brief\, doomed reign. The witches make another prediction\, which also comes true: Macbeth and his lady lose their lives\, and justice is restored.

Please make sure to have your confirmation number ready to provide to the box officer at time of your reservation. \nBizet’s classic French opera stars Anna Goryachova in Barrie Kosky’s intense production. \nCarmen is the best-known work by French composer Georges Bizet\, and one of the most famous operas in the entire art form – numbers such as the Habanera and the Toreador Song have permeated the popular consciousness as little else has. The opera’s heady combination of passion\, sensuality and violence initially proved too much for the stage\, and it was a critical failure on its 1875 premiere. Bizet died shortly after\, and never learned of the spectacular success his Carmen would achieve: the opera has been performed more than five hundred times at Covent Garden alone. \nThis ever-popular opera is given a fresh point of view in Barrie Kosky’s highly physical production\, originally created for Frankfurt Opera. The Australian director is one of the world’s most sought-after opera directors\, whose Royal Opera debut with Shostakovich’s The Nose in 2016 was greeted with delight. For Carmen he has devised a far-from-traditional version\, incorporating music written by Bizet for the score but not usually heard\, and giving a new voice to the opera’s endlessly fascinating central character.
