Please make sure to have your confirmation number ready to provide to the box officer at time of your reservation. \nBizet’s classic French opera stars Anna Goryachova in Barrie Kosky’s intense production. \nCarmen is the best-known work by French composer Georges Bizet\, and one of the most famous operas in the entire art form – numbers such as the Habanera and the Toreador Song have permeated the popular consciousness as little else has. The opera’s heady combination of passion\, sensuality and violence initially proved too much for the stage\, and it was a critical failure on its 1875 premiere. Bizet died shortly after\, and never learned of the spectacular success his Carmen would achieve: the opera has been performed more than five hundred times at Covent Garden alone. \nThis ever-popular opera is given a fresh point of view in Barrie Kosky’s highly physical production\, originally created for Frankfurt Opera. The Australian director is one of the world’s most sought-after opera directors\, whose Royal Opera debut with Shostakovich’s The Nose in 2016 was greeted with delight. For Carmen he has devised a far-from-traditional version\, incorporating music written by Bizet for the score but not usually heard\, and giving a new voice to the opera’s endlessly fascinating central character.

SUMMARY:The Rocketeer
DESCRIPTION:Cliff Secord (Bill Campbell) is a cocky stunt pilot in love with a beautiful actress\, Jenny Blake (Jennifer Connelly). When he discovers a jet pack hidden in a biplane\, Cliff straps on the rocket\, dons a flashy helmet and becomes the high-flying hero known as The Rocketeer. But when Nazis want to use the rocket as a weapon\, Cliff must use his alter ego to both protect Jenny from an evil actor (Timothy Dalton) and save the day in this period adventure based on the comic books by Dave Stevens. \nBefore the film\, there will be a presentation from Edward Eyth\, an Orlando-based creative director\, designer\, sculptor and visual arts educator. He has provided concept design and storyboards for major Hollywood films including “The Rocketeer\,” “Back to the Future\,” “Hook\,” “Arachnophobia\,” and “The Happytime Murders\,” a Jim Henson Company film scheduled for release this August. Eyth was hired to generate ideas for sets\, props and storyboards for the Disney film “the Rocketeer.” The first effort involved creating concept art to inform fabrication of a full size replica of the rocket pack depicted in Dave Stevens’ graphic novel “The Rocketeer\,” that the film was based on. The resulting rocketpack was true to Dave’s design\, but it fell short of looking like it could actually lift a grown man off the ground in a believable way. So dozens of iterations of rocketpack configurations were explored\, as the design evolved to a ‘twin rocket’ format and finally the Cirrus X-3 rocketpack featured in the film. Eyth will present some of his concept art and explain the pre-production process that brought this cult classic to the big screen.

Rich and famous\, she starts a center for troubled women\, and while Garp marries and has children\, he remains a constant\, if somewhat critical\, observer of the strange community that forms around Jenny. Based on the best-selling book by John Irving\, The World According to Garp is a terrific adaptation that received two Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Glenn Close) and Best Supporting Actor (John Lithgow). \nAfter the film\, there will be a discussion led by George McGowan\, a 2012 graduate of Rollins College Master of Liberal Studies program\, who just happened to write his master’s program entrance essay on The World According to Garp. He also writes a monthly pop culture column for The Park Press. All of that is in his “spare” time since he is the Director of Audit at the City of Orlando and a husband to Janna and father to three kids in college. At this event\, George hopes to initiate a conversation about how a movie can deliver upon the promise of a very good novel and even enhance one’s understanding of the novel’s themes.

In the middle of it all is Davey\, a 15-year-old kid with nothing much to do this summer but hang out with his sex-obsessed friends. When Davey suspects the killer might be the kindly cop next door (Rich Sommer\, GLOW\, Mad Men)\, he convinces his friends and his ridiculously beautiful former babysitter to investigate. Could Davey possibly be right\, or is it just his over-active imagination? While Summer of 84 might seem rooted in the success of similar nostalgic fare\, it really owes more to true ‘80s gems like The ‘Burbs\, The Goonies\, and The Gate\, where the films are fully committed to the peril their characters encounter without the benefit of pop culture hindsight. Because its intent is so pure\, this midnight movie an entertaining thrill ride with a lot of heart and humor\, that wouldn’t even seem a moment out of place if you had discovered it on an old RCA VHS tape that had been collecting dust in the back of your parents’ entertainment center.
