SUMMARY:After Parkland
DESCRIPTION:In the days after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018 that killed 17 people and launched a nationwide student movement\, filmmakers Emily Taguchi and Jake Lefferman embedded with students and families whose lives were forever transformed. They include senior David Hogg\, who recorded his class during the attack and became the face of the Never Again movement; freshman Brooke Harrison\, who was in the first classroom under attack; Sam Zeif\, a senior who was locked down in the same building\, texting with his little brother and unsure if they would ever see each other again; Andrew Pollack\, the father of 18-year-old Meadow\, who was killed after being shot nine times; and the loved ones of 17-year-old Joaquin Oliver\, including his parents Manuel and Patricia\, girlfriend Victoria Gonzalez\, and best friend Dillon McCooty. The filmmakers developed trusting relationships with these students and families\, who opened their doors during some of the most difficult moments of their lives\, and followed their private journeys as they rose to challenge the nation to end gun violence. Weaving together candid\, in-depth interviews\, vérité footage\, and personal videos\, the film chronicles moments both intimate and defining – from the quiet hours of grief and reflection\, to those of political awakening\, and onto milestones on the public stage – creating a moving portrait of one community’s crusade to turn tragedy into progress. \nAfter Parkland will screen in over 100 theaters across the U.S. on February 12 as part of a nationwide Day of Action to commemorate the second anniversary of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Click here for more information and a complete list of participating theaters.

SUMMARY:Persepolis
DESCRIPTION:Stay with us after the screening for a Q&A discussion led by Professor Jeremy Carnes\, who is an instructor of English at Rollins College and a scholar of graphic novels and comics. \nPersepolis is the poignant story of a young girl coming-of-age in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of precocious and outspoken nine-year-old Marjane that we see a people’s hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power — forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless\, she outsmarts the “social guardians” and discovers punk\, ABBA and Iron Maiden. Yet when her uncle is senselessly executed and as bombs fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq war the daily fear that permeates life in Iran is palpable. As she gets older\, Marjane’s boldness causes her parents to worry over her continued safety. And so\, at age fourteen\, they make the difficult decision to send her to school in Austria. Vulnerable and alone in a strange land\, she endures the typical ordeals of a teenager. In addition\, Marjane has to combat being equated with the religious fundamentalism and extremism she fled her country to escape. Over time\, she gains acceptance\, and even experiences love.

SUMMARY:Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets: Live at the Roundhouse
DESCRIPTION:Live at the Roundhouse is unlike any other concert film connected with Pink Floyd. It’s the nearest thing you can get to a time machine\, transporting you back to the very earliest days of the band. Nick Mason\, the only band member to have played on all of Pink Floyd’s studio albums\, returns to the group’s earliest records\, joined in the line-up by Gary Kemp\, Guy Pratt\, Lee Harris and Dom Beken. \nNick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets took the drummer back to clubs for the first time in 1967\, then to theatres\, across the UK\, North America and Europe\, playing only music his old band had recorded before The Dark Side of the Moon. \nCaptured from the band’s celebrated shows at London’s Roundhouse\, where Pink Floyd played some of their most revered early shows in the 1960s\, the film features a uniquely thrilling set list including songs hailing from Syd Barrett’s time with the band. Only four songs from this eclectic roster have ever previously appeared on official live releases by Pink Floyd or its members. Everything else is being experienced for the first time since their original live performances.  \nThis theatrical event also includes a Q&A with Nick Mason and the band where they will answer questions submitted by fans\, exclusive to cinemas.

The job is designed to keep the ex-con busy\, but Daniel has a higher calling. Over the course of his incarceration he has found Christ\, and aspires to join the clergy – but his criminal record means no seminary will accept him. When Daniel arrives in town\, one quick lie allows him to be mistaken for the town’s new priest\, and he sets about leading his newfound flock. Though he has no training\, his passion and charisma inspire the community. At the same time\, his unconventional sermons and unpriestly behavior raise suspicions among some of the townsfolk – even more so as he edges towards a dark secret that the community hasn’t revealed in the confessional booth.

(He died after another wanton night of carousing) Attempting to marry more wisely the second time around\, Doña Flor weds a stable\, but boring\, pharmacist who has no interest in sex. When she discovers that her new sex life is less than satisfying\, Doña Flor is visited by the sexy ghost of her late husband. When initially released\, Dona Flor became the most successful film in Brazilian history. Four teens face heartbreak and celebrate in the rituals of an extraordinary senior year. \nIvete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan paint a detailed and astonishing portrait of Pahokee\, a rural village in the Everglades\, Florida. Very close-knit\, its inhabitants fight to face fragile financial situations and an uncertain future. Through a precise observational approach\, the film captures the daily life of this city restoring a rich palette of nuances. From sporting events to beauty contests at school\, filmmakers explore social and community rituals\, and how gender and identity are portrayed as new stories are created. Going well beyond the teaching of Wiseman\, which Lucas and Bresnan have perfectly integrated\, the film seems to bathe in the singular atmosphere of a song of Gil Scott Heron\, with lingering hints of rural blues tinged with urban echoes. A complex multi-faceted work that recalls both the raw social realism of the new American cinema and the neorealist style. Pahokee is the powerful portrait of a forgotten America\, absent from the current political discourse.
