In this rendition of Edward Bulwer’s classic novel\, set in 79 A.D.\, the lives of a prominent statesman\, a beautiful woman\, a pagan priest\, a spiteful witch and a blind beggar are carefully interwoven. The intrigues that connect them are brought to a climax in the gladiatorial arena\, at the moment the sleeping volcano unleashes its molten fury. \nThe Last Days Of Pompeii is among the last of the great tableaux films\, in which most scenes are explained by a title\, then dramatized within a single wide shot\, a presentational style whose origins were more theatrical and literary than cinematic. Just a few short months after the film’s release\, this technique would be forever outmoded\, due to such films as D. W. Griffith’s The Birth Of A Nation and Giovanni Pastrone’s Cabiria\, which helped rewrite the laws of cinematic expression. \nThis project is supported by Orlando Science Center for the exhibition of Pompeii: The Immortal City\, funded by Orange County Government through the Arts and Cultural Affairs program. The presentation will explore what makes dogs so special to us. Is it their intelligence\, their problem-solving ability\, their sheer smarts? No; in fact dogs are not so remarkable in these areas. But they are remarkable at understanding humans\, and we love them for that. We’ll review some research from the field of animal behavior which reveals that dogs know us better than we know ourselves. This specialization is why dogs have such an important place in the emotional lives of those who identify as dog people. \nDr. Yankelevitz is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Rollins College with a focus on the applied and experimental analysis of human and nonhuman animal behavior. Some areas of interest include using behavior analysis to help children be safe around dogs\, to train dogs and their people to live together better\, and to help cats become more adoptable. Her courses include Dog is Love: The Science of Human-Animal Interaction\, a rat behavior lab\, and Comparative Animal Behavior. Her volunteer animal shelter work has included working with every sort of dog imaginable\, fostering over 125 cats\, and running a foster program. Her own dog\, cat\, and birds provide lots of fun research ideas and insights. \nWhen\, by executive decree\, all the canine pets of Megasaki City are exiled to a vast garbage-dump called Trash Island\, 12-year-old Atari sets off alone in a miniature Junior-Turbo Prop and flies across the river in search of his bodyguard-dog\, Spots. There\, with the assistance of a pack of newly-found mongrel friends\, he begins an epic journey that will decide the fate and future of the entire Prefecture.

In addition to discussing the film on its own merits\, it raises important questions about cultural appropriation\, Japan’s reflections on World War II\, and any adaptation’s relationship with and responsibility to its original. \nThrone of Blood:\nReturning to their lord’s castle\, samurai warriors Washizu (Toshirô Mifune) and Miki (Minoru Chiaki) are waylaid by a spirit who predicts their futures. When the first part of the spirit’s prophecy comes true\, Washizu’s scheming wife\, Asaji (Isuzu Yamada)\, presses him to speed up the rest of the spirit’s prophecy by murdering his lord and usurping his place. Director Akira Kurosawa’s resetting of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” in feudal Japan is one of his most acclaimed films.
