DESCRIPTION:Special Juneteenth Event \n Join us for live music by John Lee Wyatt at Eden Bar from 6:30-9:30PM\, courtesy of Performing Arts Matter! \n  \nThey’re the greatest band you’ve never heard of… \nThe British group Cymande are unsung heroes whose message of peace\, love and funk sailed beyond Britain’s shores and helped shape music for five decades. Long after they stopped playing\, the music played on\, so they returned to play some more. \nIn the racially turbulent UK of the early 70s\, a group of black musicians came together in South London with a common love of rhythms and a message of peace. Cymande – with the dove as their symbol – combined jazz\, funk\, soul and Caribbean grooves to form a unique sound. Despite success in the USA they faced indifference in their native Britain\, becoming disillusioned and disbanding. But the music lived on\, as new generations of artists imbibed and reworked their pioneering sounds in fresh ways. From Soul II Soul to De La Soul\, MC Solaar to The Fugees\, the Dove had spread Cymande‘s message far and wide\, prompting their return after forty years. This is their story.

DESCRIPTION:It’s the end of the Hu-Man race as we know it! Alien visitor Ro-Man (regular gorilla impersonator George Barrows\, wearing a hairy ape suit and a deep-sea diving helmet)\, wipes out most of the Earth’s population with his “awesome calcinator death ray.” There are six survivors who have taken a neutralizing serum: a scientist\, a professor\, the professor’s wife\, and their three children. Ro-Man receives instructions from the leader of his planet\, “The Great One” (also played by Barrows)\, on how to kill the survivors\, but love gets in the way when Ro-Man falls for the professor’s comely eldest daughter. With echoes of King Kong\, Ro-Man’s lustful desire makes him want to be Hu-Man too\, and this will lead to his downfall. Made for a budget around $20\,000\, this cheapie camp classic just gets more ludicrous – and fun – with every sequence.  Part of the first wave of 3-D releases in early 1953\, Robot Monster’s excellent stereoscopic effects have been lovingly restored by 3-D Film Archive in honor of the movie’s 70th anniversary.

Unbeknownst to the young bride\, this officer is looking merely for a marriage of convenience. She falls promptly and swiftly in love\, even converting to Christianity in order to be a better wife. Yet\, storm clouds gather on the horizon: at the wedding\, an uninvited guest curses the couple. \nPinkerton leaves\, and Cio-Cio San is left alone to bear his child. Suzuki\, Cio-Cio San’s maid\, insists that the officer will never return\, but Butterfly will not believe it. Her faith is seemingly justified one day when Pinkerton’s ship indeed sails into the harbour. \nHowever\, Pinkerton has brought an American wife with him\, and Butterfly is expected to give up her child. She agrees to do so\, but only if he comes in person to see her. He arrives to find that she has committed ritual suicide with her father’s knife. \nThe most loved aria from this opera is ‘Un bel di vedremo\,’ sung by Butterfly as she pines for Pinkerton’s return.

And rightly so\, because in Norma Italian Romanticism reached its pinnacle. \nThis production\, by award-winning American stage director Kevin Newbury\, stresses the ritual aspects of the drama. Norma is a classical heroine\, passionate and revengeful\, and her dilemma provides the starting point for the most successful work by the last and greatest composer of bel canto. Though the first performance was a failure\, Norma went on to become an established favorite. It first came to the Liceu in 1847\, not long after its official opening\, and was\, in fact\, the third opera to be staged there.
