SUMMARY:Video Diary of a Lost Girl
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Filmmaker: Writer/director Lindsay Denniberg will be in attendance for a Q&A! \nThe feature film debut from writer-director (and University of Central Florida grads) Lindsay Denniberg and co-writer Chris Shields\, VIDEO DIARY OF A LOST GIRL is a hypercolored dreamland that combines a love for genre film history with a gorgeous handmade aesthetic. Louise (Pris McEver) works in a video store. But she’s also a demon. A descendent of biblical demon-mother Lilith\, Louise fulfills her predestined obligation to have sex with a man—and then kill him—every full moon. When she meets Charlie (Shields)\, a reincarnated partner from her past\, Louise struggles to not do what she does best. Meticulously crafted with the use of repurposed art materials and green screen\, VIDEO DIARY is a valentine to the VHS aesthetic and an exploration of personal themes via the guise of body horror. The movie was influenced by everything from LIQUID SKY to ROCKULA\, from HEATHERS to DEAD RINGERS\, resulting in an absurdist\, experimental horror-comedy that was years ahead of its time.

Gojira) is the roaring granddaddy of all monster movies. It’s also a remarkably humane and melancholy drama\, made in Japan at a time when the country was reeling from nuclear attack and H-bomb testing in the Pacific. Its rampaging radioactive beast\, the poignant embodiment of an entire population’s fears\, became a beloved international icon of destruction\, spawning almost thirty sequels.  \n

SUMMARY:It’s Such a Beautiful Day & ME
DESCRIPTION:ME \nDon Hertzfeldt’s newest animated film ME is a 22-minute musical odyssey about trauma\, technology\, and the retreat of humanity into itself. Indiewire has described it as “soul-shaking” and “a triumph”. \n2023\, 22 Minutes \n  \nIt’s Such a Beautiful Day \nReturning to theaters for the first time since 2012\, It’s Such a Beautiful Day has been hailed by critics and audiences alike as one of the best animated films of all time. Originally released as three short films over the course of six years\, the picture was captured entirely in-camera on a 35mm rostrum animation stand. It’s Such a Beautiful Day painstakingly blended traditional hand-drawn animation and experimental optical effects with new digital hybrids\, printed out one frame at time and placed under the camera. In 2012\, the three completed short films about a man named Bill were seamlessly combined to create a new feature film. Upon its original release\, It’s Such a Beautiful Day was named by many critics as one of the best films of the year. The L.A. Film Critics Association named it runner-up for “Best Animated Film”. \n2012\, 62 Minutes

SUMMARY:Meshes of the Afternoon and At Land
DESCRIPTION:All free La CinOMAthéque screenings will take place in the Truist Auditorium at the Orlando Museum of Art. \nACCESS FOR ALL AT OMA presents: \nLa CinOMAthéque: A collaboration between OMA and Enzian\, with generous support provided by the Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program. \nThe Orlando Museum of Art is thrilled to announce the launch of La CinOMAthéque in partnership with the Enzian Theater\, as part of its “Access for All at OMA\,” an all-new program offering FREE admission to the museum! \nAccess for All at OMA is a monthly free day dedicated to the community. La CinOMAthéque will be a series of 6 bimonthly free screenings of experimental\, avant-garde\, art films in the Truist auditorium at OMA on Access for All day. \nEach screening will be introduced by a UCF film professor and include a talkback with OMA Chief Curator Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon and Enzian Programming Manager Tim Anderson. \n____________________________________________________________ \n\nMeshes of the Afternoon and At Land: The Films of Maya Deren \nIntroduction by Zachary Beckler \nLive score by Danny Jordan \n \nMeshes of the Afternoon \nA large flower\, the silhouette of a figure briskly walking away\, a house key\, a bread knife\, a telephone receiver resting off the hook\, and a spinning phonographic turntable define the shifting functional elements in Meshes of the Afternoon from which the film’s evolving\, malleable construct – the fragile and tenuously interconnected mesh of actual and perceived reality – is intriguingly (and ingenuously) mapped. \nA woman (Maya Deren) walking along the sidewalk near her home catches a momentary glimpse of a figure turning the corner\, unlatches the front door and\, after a cursory inspection of the empty household\, proceeds upstairs to rest on an armchair situated by a front-view window. \nFrom this deceptively simple introductory premise\, Maya Deren modulates the mise-en-scene of seemingly mundane objects to create overlapping\, yet non-intersecting planes of existential reality\, using permutations of recurring images – mirrored surfaces (the apparition’s face\, polished metal spheres\, a hand mirror)\, glass\, duality and doppelgangers – to represent variably interlocking narrative fragments of observation\, inference\, deduction\, and memory. \nUnfolding with the narrative discontinuity characteristic of nouvelle roman literature (creating an idiosyncratically dissociative filmic language that also characterizes Alain Resnais’ subsequent feature films\, particularly Last Year at Marienbad and Je t’aime\, je t’aime)\, the film posits a series of subtle structural\, temporal\, and logical mutations\, creating a sublimely recursive\, mind-bending meditation on the interaction between experience and memory\, domestic banality and violence\, imagination and causation. \n1943\, 14 minutes\, Directed by Maya Deren \n  \n \nAt Land \nAt Land is another of Maya Deren’s dream like films. The message which it transmits to and its main subject rests on the idea of the mutability of a personality. Maya said once that this film was made to show people the struggle to maintain their personal identity. The whole film has only 14 minutes\, in which a whole life is subjectively described. \nIt was made in 1944\, and Deren was the one who wrote\, directed and played\, the featured role in it\, just like in her first movie “Meshes of the Afternoon.” Maya Deren is laying on the sand\, and the ocean’s waves are coming and going as if she had been spilled from it. This symbolic birth from the sea was particularly chosen to make us think of the role of education. She came from the sea\, different from all the others who had influences and rules to follow since were born. Having the chance to find out by herself who she is and what she is doing there at that specific moment\, like in a natural way maya would say\, make her run. \nThe film is all about her world exploration\, her curiosity to discover what is in there\, criticizing society at that time which was not curious to know if there was any truth besides television or Hollywood. At the end\, she chooses to go back to the sea after her incessant odyssey at land to find an identity. \n1944\, 14 minutes\, Directed by Maya Deren

SUMMARY:Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex
DESCRIPTION:A pioneer of the glam-rock movement and an early champion of punk\, Marc Bolan was always ahead of the curve. This was both an advantage and a stumbling block for the mop-headed T. Rex bandleader\, whose unique approach to pop songcraft is highlighted in Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan and T. Rex. Providing intimate access to both those who knew Bolan best and the musicians profoundly impacted by his work\, Angelheaded Hipster combines archival footage from Bolan’s life with a behind the scenes look at the 2020 tribute album of the same name\, including performances from U2\, Billy Idol\, Joan Jett\, Ringo Starr\, Nick Cave\, Beth Orton\, Macy Gray\, Father John Misty\, and Elton John.

DESCRIPTION:Special 15th Anniversary — 35mm Screening! \nUncomfortable Brunch take-over! \nScuzz poet Harmony Korine (Spring Breakers\, AGGRO DR1FT) takes a dumpster dive into the freakiest fringes of weirdo America with this singular paragon of pop-art transgression. Shot on appropriately grimy VHS\, TRASH HUMPERS brings us a gang of elderly degenerates who film themselves in the backlots and alleyways of Nashville\, drinking heavily\, defiling garbage and anything else at hand\, and spreading destruction wherever they go. An unclassifiable work of post-cinema that plays like the most bizarrely unsettling home movie ever uncovered in a flea-market bargain bin\, TRASH HUMPERS is graced with the strange beauty and proudly outsider spirit that runs through all of Korine’s films. \nFreaky Fridays’ programmers Tim Anderson and Paige Babbage are out of town this month\, so they’ve handed the reins over to Joshua Martin and Kat Whitacre of Uncomfortable Brunch. Combined\, they are promising you one of the most legendary evenings of cinema this year! Complete the takeover in November\, when the Freaky Fridays team takes over Uncomfortable Brunch for a screening of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer!

SUMMARY:The Skin I Live In
DESCRIPTION:Winner – 4 Goya Awards (with 16 nominations) \nWinner – BAFTA Awards –  Best Foreign Language Film \nNominee – Cannes Film Festival – Palme d’Or \nNominee – Golden Globes – Best Foreign Film \nEver since his wife was burned in a car crash\, Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas)\, an eminent plastic surgeon\, has been interested in creating a new skin with which he could have saved her. After twelve years\, he manages to cultivate in his own laboratory\, a skin that is sensitive to caresses\, but a real shield against all the aggressions\, both external and internal\, to which our largest organ is submitted. To obtain it\, he has used the possibilities provided by cellular therapy. \nIn addition to years of study and experimentation\, Robert needed a human guinea pig\, an accomplice and no scruples. Scruples were never a problem; they weren’t part of his character. Marilia\, the woman who looked after him from the day he was born\, is his most faithful accomplice. And as for the human guinea pig… \nThere are irreversible processes\, roads of no return\, one-way journeys. Academy Award® winner Pedro Almodóvar’s The Skin I Live In tells the story of one of those processes. The protagonist travels one of those roads against her will\, she is forced violently to set out on journey from which she cannot return. Her Kafkaesque story is the result of a sentence handed out by a jury made up of just one person\, her worst enemy. The verdict\, therefore\, is a form of extreme revenge.
