SUMMARY:Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
DESCRIPTION:35mm Screening! \nThe breakout international hit that propelled Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar to global fame\, Women on the Verge of Nervous Breakdown is a wild\, vibrant farce tinged with heartbreak. The film follows actress Pepa Marcos (Carmen Maura) as her life unravels after being abruptly dumped by her lover. With its madcap pacing\, surreal humor\, and stylish flair\, the film became a defining work of post-Franco Spanish cinema—boldly exploring themes of female desire\, emotional instability\, and independence. \n“Women on the Verge” also sparked controversy upon release. Its candid depiction of women’s mental health\, sexuality\, and tranquilizer use challenged more conservative audiences and critics. In Spain\, the film both scandalized and thrilled a society still adjusting to democratic freedoms\, while abroad\, it introduced Almodóvar’s unapologetically eccentric and feminist lens to a wider audience. \nQLatinx will be in attendance and tabling in the lobby!

SUMMARY:The Short Films of Marie Menken
DESCRIPTION:All free La CinOMAthéque screenings will take place in the Truist Auditorium at the Orlando Museum of Art. \nACCESS FOR ALL AT OMA presents: \nLa CinOMAthéque: A collaboration between OMA and Enzian\, with generous support provided by the Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program. \nThe Orlando Museum of Art is thrilled to announce the launch of La CinOMAthéque in partnership with the Enzian Theater\, as part of its “Access for All at OMA\,” an all-new program offering FREE admission to the museum! \nAccess for All at OMA is a monthly free day dedicated to the community. La CinOMAthéque will be a series of 6 bimonthly free screenings of experimental\, avant-garde\, art films in the Truist auditorium at OMA on Access for All day. \nEach screening will be introduced by a UCF film professor and include a talkback with OMA Chief Curator Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon and Enzian Programming Manager Tim Anderson. \n  \nThe Short Films of Marie Menken: \nMarie Menken (1910-1970) is the unsung heroine of the American avant-garde cinema. A mentor\, muse and major influence for such key experimental filmmakers as Kenneth Anger\, Stan Brakhage\, Jonas Mekas and Andy Warhol\, Menken created an extraordinary body of exuberant and stunningly beautiful films shaped\, above all\, by her intuitive understanding of handheld cinematography. Beginning with her celebrated first film\, Visual Variations on Noguchi (1945)\, Menken used the hand-cranked Bolex camera favored by avant-garde filmmakers to introduce a new agility\, grace and spontaneity into experimental cinema\, a lightness of camera and form hitherto unseen in American film. With Noguchi\, Menken also began a spirited dialogue between cinema and the plastic and painterly arts that extends across her films in a witty yet deeply insightful exploration of the formal language and methodology specific to those schools and painters with whom Menken was close – from the Abstract Expressionist drip painting humorously critiqued in Drips in Strips (1963)\, to the factory production of Pop art in the revelatory Andy Warhol (1964) and the Fluxus practice of Robert Watts in Watts with Eggs (1967).  \nFeaturing:\nWatts with Eggs (1967\, 2.5 min)\nWrestling (1964\, 8 min)\nVisual Variations on Noguchi (1945\, 4 min)\nNotebook (1962\, 10 min)\nLights (1966\, 6.5 min)\nGo Go Go! SUMMARY:Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of “Animation August“!\n \nThese are not your childhood cartoons. Celebrate some of the boldest and most visionary works in modern animation during Animation August at Enzian! \nLaunching the program is 2-time Academy Award® nominee Don Hertzfeldt’s World of Tomorrow Trilogy (2016–2020)\, a profound and darkly funny meditation on memory\, technology\, and the fragility of the human experience. From Japan\, Masaaki Yuasa’s Mind Game (2004) explodes onto the screen with fever-dream energy and unrestrained psychedelic imagination\, pushing animation’s limits in both form and philosophy. Rounding out the lineup is Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass (2024). 20 years in the making\, this haunting new dreamscape from the Brothers Quay—masters of stop-motion surrealism—is a gothic\, ghostly descent into the subconscious. Join us for a collection of films that promise to challenge\, mesmerize\, and linger long after the credits roll. Please note\, this animation program is not intended for children and contains adult themes and content. \nUnleash your inner “Ani-Maniac” and see all three films with a discounted series pass! \nSanitorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass: \nProduced and presented by Christopher Nolan. In their first feature in 20 years\, Stephen and Timothy Quay return to adapt the work of Polish writer Bruno Schulz with a mixture of stop motion puppetry and live action. A ghostly train journey on a forgotten branch line transports a son\, Jozef\, visiting his dying Father in a remote Galician Sanatorium. Upon arrival\, Jozef finds the Sanatorium entirely moribund and run by a dubious Doctor Gotard\, who tells him that his father’s death\, the death that has struck him in his country\, has not yet occurred and that here they are always late by a certain interval of time of which the length cannot be defined. Jozef will come to realize that the Sanatorium is a floating world halfway between sleep and wakefulness and that time and events cannot be measured in any tangible form. \nAbout the Quay Brothers: Identical twins Stephen Quay and Timothy Quay\, known as the Brothers Quay\, are two of the most distinct filmmakers of our time. Their stop-motion animations have introduced a generation of viewers to a lyrical darkness not often associated with animation. Influenced by Central and Eastern European artists and writers like Walerian Borowczyk\, Jan Švankmajer and Franz Kafka\, their work creates haunting\, miniature worlds of uncanny puppets and atmospheric detail that reflects the dark psychology resulting from a century of industrial warfare\, surrealist art\, and dialectical politics.

SUMMARY:Arrebato (Rapture)
DESCRIPTION:4K restoration! \nARREBATO’s dimension-shattering blend of heroin\, sex\, and Super-8 is the final word in cinemania. \nHorror movie director José (Eusebio Poncela\, Matador) is adrift in a sea of doubt and drugs. As his belated second feature nears completion\, his reclusive bubble is popped by two events: a sudden reappearance from an ex-girlfriend (Cecilia Roth\, All About My Mother) and a package from past acquaintance Pedro: a reel of Super-8 film\, an audiotape\, and a door key. From there\, the boundaries of time\, space\, and sexuality are erased as José is once more sucked into Pedro’s vampiric orbit. Together\, they attempt the ultimate hallucinogenic catharsis through a moebius strip of filming and being filmed. \nLong unavailable internationally\, Arrebato has since been rediscovered as a cult masterpiece — a queer-coded\, avant-garde horror tale often described as Spain’s answer to Videodrome or Eraserhead. Legendary director Pedro Almodóvar has cited it as a major influence\, and its reputation has continued to grow for those drawn to the darker\, drug-fueled edges of cinematic obsession. \nFreaky Fridays ticket prices include a free popcorn and soda or lemonade for all attendees! Alcohol can be purchased at Eden Bar. Regular food service will not be available for Freaky Friday events. So\, come early\, and fuel up outside for the night ahead!

SUMMARY:Nashville
DESCRIPTION:One of the most distinctive voices in American cinema\, Robert Altman (1925–2006) defied Hollywood conventions with a maverick spirit\, crafting films known for their overlapping dialogue and large ensemble casts\, and often using wide master shots to stage deeply intimate sagas. At 45\, when he made his first successful studio film\, Altman was far too old to be a ’60s counterculture icon\, yet he stands as perhaps the most anti-establishment director of that era. From the satirical bite of M*A*S*H (1970) to the sprawling\, multi-layered narratives of Nashville (1975) and Short Cuts (1993)\, Altman’s resume is a masterwork of subversion—spanning revisionist Westerns (McCabe & Mrs. Miller)\, film noir (The Long Goodbye)\, psychoanalytical family drama (3 Women)\, American politics (Tanner ’88)\, and later skewering Hollywood’s vapidity with his Oscar®-nominated 1992 film The Player. \nAs we celebrate 7-time Academy Award nominee Robert Altman’s 100th birthday\, we honor a filmmaker who turned chaos into art and left an indelible mark on cinema as a medium of wickedly boundless possibilities. \nNashville: \n50th Anniversary! \nNominated for 5 Academy Awards® and winner of Best Original Song (“I’m Easy”) maverick director Robert Altman’s ambitious\, sprawling ensemble drama that paints a vibrant\, satirical portrait of American life\, fame\, and politics through the intersecting lives of 24 characters over five days in the country music capital of the world. With a staggering 7 Golden Globe nominations just for acting\, Altman’s assembled troupe includes iconic performances from the likes of Keith Carradine\, Karen Black\, Shelley Duvall\, Ned Beatty\, Geraldine Chaplin\, Henry Gibson\, Scott Glenn\, Jeff Goldblum\, Barbara Harris and Michael Murphy. \nA biting satire of both music and politics\, Nashville is considered one of Altman’s greatest masterpieces and a defining film of the 1970s\, lauded for its layered storytelling\, themes of ambition\, identity\, disillusionment\, and the spectacle of American culture which converge in a final act that has to be seen to be believed.

SUMMARY:The Raid 2
DESCRIPTION:35mm Screening! \nGareth Evans’ blistering sequel to The Raid: Redemption redefined modern action cinema. This 150 minute epic picks up moments after the original film ends\, following undercover cop Rama (Iko Uwais) as he plunges into Jakarta’s brutal criminal underworld to protect his family and expose corruption within the police force. \nFamed for its intricate choreography\, visceral fight scenes\, and bold cinematic style\, The Raid 2 expanded the claustrophobic intensity of its predecessor into an epic crime saga. Its brutal martial arts sequences have earned it (along with The Raid: Redemption) a legendary place in mid-2010s action cinema\, even cited by director Chad Stahelski as a primary influence on his John Wick series!

Based on an original negative\, the majority of the restoration work was done manually\, image by image. Color grading was approved by Masaharu Ueda\, one of Ran‘s three cinematographers and a close associate of Kurosawa’s.

SUMMARY:Ron Delsener Presents
DESCRIPTION:Ron Delsener Presents is an all-access pass to New York’s greatest gigs-featuring some of the iconic artists who performed in them; and a portrait of the singular figure who brought these shows together\, rock concert promoter and impresario Ron Delsener. \nIn a career spanning sixty years\, Delsener was the name behind virtually every major contemporary music concert in New York City for generations. From promoting the Beatles at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium\, to bringing David Bowie to Carnegie Hall\, and Patti Smith to the Palladium\, to somehow convincing Simon and Garfunkel to bury the hatchet and play the biggest concert of all time in Central Park\, Ron Delsener was behind it all. \nRon Delsener Presents offers an intimate look into the life and legacy of legendary concert promoter Ron Delsener\, showcasing never-before-seen archival footage and fresh interviews with Delsener himself and iconic artists who helped shape modern music. Featured voices include Bruce Springsteen\, Billy Joel\, Jon Bon Jovi\, Verdine White\, Bette Midler\, Paul Stanley\, Gene Simmons\, Paul Simon\, Art Garfunkel\, Patti Smith\, and more. The film’s soundtrack spans generations\, with classic tracks by The Beatles\, Count Basie\, David Bowie\, Ike & Tina Turner\, KISS\, and Simon & Garfunkel\, and features an original score by Money Mark\, renowned producer and keyboardist for the Beastie Boys. \nThrough a portrait of a mercurial and relentless showman\, Ron Delsener Presents takes us behind-the-curtain through the last half century of the live music business\, chronicling the tactics that drove live performance from disorganized\, low-fi nightclubs to international tours\, arenas\, stadiums\, and\, eventually\, into a global empire. A transformation that Delsener is in many ways responsible for. Working in a business he helped to create\, Delsener now in the later stages of his life\, still has his hand in the game. Sure\, he could stop—maybe even he should—but Ron doesn’t know how.

SUMMARY:The Brig
\n  \nThe Brig: \nJonas Mekas looked to the stage for his second feature\, an adaptation of Kenneth H. Brown’s play of the same name\, which had been produced off-Broadway at the Living Theatre by Judith Malina and Julian Beck. A harrowing\, suffocating portrait of brutality and dehumanization within a Marine Corps prison\, the film chronicles the abuses and indignities suffered by 10 prisoners at the hands of a few sadistic guards across a single day. At once a seminal adaptation of experimental theater and a fierce polemic against the conjoined carceral and military-industrial complexes\, this searing film is marked by\, per a Time magazine write-up at the time of its premiere\, “a nightmare air that suggests Kafka with a Kodak.”

SUMMARY:Stripped for Parts – American Journalism on the Brink
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this special screening with two-time Academy Award® nominee filmmaker Rick Goldsmith (The Most Dangerous Man in America (2010) and Tell the Truth and Run (1997)). Following the film\, Orlando Sentinel columnist Scott Maxwell will moderate a Q&A conversation with Judith Smelser\, President and General Manager of Central Florida Public Media\, and the filmmaker. \nStripped for Parts is the story of a secretive hedge fund that is plundering what is left of America’s newspapers\, and the journalists who are fighting back. \nHedge fund Alden Global Capital is quietly gobbling up newspapers across the country and gutting them\, but no one knows why– until journalist Julie Reynolds begins to investigate. Her findings trigger rebellions across the country by journalists working at Alden-owned newspapers. Backed by the NewsGuild union\, the newsmen and women go toe-to-toe with their “vulture capitalist” owners in a battle to save and rebuild local journalism in America. Who will control the future of America’s news ecosystem: Wall Street billionaires concerned only with profit\, or those who see journalism as an essential public service\, the lifeblood of our democracy?  \nThis presentation is made possible by the generous support of the Orlando Sentinel Guild.

SUMMARY:Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 13+ Films of Halloween. \n25th Anniversary! \nJoin us for a rare 25th anniversary screening of Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2—the provocative and polarizing sequel that dared to follow up one of the most iconic and successful independent films of all time. \nDirected by Oscar-nominated documentarian Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost\, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster)\, this psychological horror film trades found footage for a surreal\, stylized descent into media-fueled hysteria. Set in the aftermath of The Blair Witch Project’s cultural explosion\, a group of strangers come together to tour the infamous woods made famous by the original film. Among them is Jeff (Jeffrey Donovan\, Burn Notice)\, a local obsessed with the Blair Witch mythos\, who guides the group into the Black Hills Forest for an overnight stay at the ruins of Rustin Parr’s house. When they awaken with no memory of the previous night and find their video equipment has recorded something horrifying\, the lines between reality\, obsession\, and delusion begin to unravel. \nPivoting sharply from the Vérité style of its predecessor\, the film explores the media frenzy and cultural paranoia surrounding The Blair Witch Project\, rather than continuing its found-footage format. Critically panned upon release\, the film has since gained attention for its meta-narrative and subversive approach to sequel-making. Rather than simply retreading the original’s footsteps\, it attempted something more provocative: a horror film about the impact of horror films. \nTry one of our 13 Cocktails of Halloween\, available at Eden Bar starting October 1: \n \nBLACK BERRY HILLS\nBlackberry Vodka\, Amaretto\, Lime\, Lemon\, Sprite

SUMMARY:Night of the Living Dead (4k Restoration)
DESCRIPTION:4K Restoration! \nDive into the magic of cinema with the Enzian Film Club! Join us for an enriching experience where film enthusiasts and novices alike can explore classic films in a new light. Each session features a short presentation by esteemed professors from local colleges\, followed by collaborative discussions that bring fresh insights and foster a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking. Part of our Saturday Matinee Classics series\, the Enzian Film Club is your gateway to understanding and enjoying timeless cinematic masterpieces in a vibrant\, community-focused setting. \nFeaturing an Enzian Film Club discussion by David T. Meyers from Full Sail University! \nShot outside of Pittsburgh at a fraction of the cost of a Hollywood feature\, by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark\, George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is one of the great stories of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time. A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of flesh-eating ghouls newly arisen from their graves\, Romero’s claustrophobic vision of a late-sixties America (literally) tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre\, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary\, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in the lead role. \nAfter decades of poor-quality prints and video transfers\, Night of the Living Dead can finally be seen for the immaculately crafted film that it is thanks to a new 4K restoration\, scanned from the original camera negative and supervised by Romero himself. Stark\, haunting\, and more relevant than ever\, Night of the Living Dead is back. \nAbout the speaker: David T. Meyers is the Film Department Chairman at Full Sail University\, where he teaches the History of Motion Picture Arts. He began his film career working with legendary director George Romero on the feature film MONKEY SHINES. \nTry one of our 13 Cocktails of Halloween\, available at Eden Bar starting October 1: \n \nTHEY’RE COMING TO GET YOU\, MIDORI\nGin\, Midori\, Honey\, Lime\, Mint\, Absinthe Float

SUMMARY:Day of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 13+ Films of Halloween. \n40th Anniversary! Featuring an extended introduction with Barry Anderson\, special effects makeup artist! \nThe third entry in George A. Romero’s legendary zombie saga plunges viewers into a bleak\, claustrophobic world where the living may be more dangerous than the dead. Set in a fortified underground military bunker in South Florida\, the film follows a dwindling group of scientists and soldiers trying to survive in the aftermath of a global zombie apocalypse. As tensions rise and the chain of command begins to break\, Dr. Sarah Bowman  finds herself caught between the brutal authority of Captain Rhodes and the radical experiments of Dr. Logan\, aka “Frankenstein”\, who believes the undead can be trained. \nThough underappreciated upon release\, the film has since gained recognition for its grisly realism and haunting atmosphere. It also gave horror fans one of the genre’s most memorable zombie characters: Bub (Sherman Howard)\, the first of Romero’s undead to show signs of emotion and memory—hinting that maybe the undead are evolving. \nShot on a tight budget but loaded with groundbreaking practical effects by special makeup maestro Tom Savini and a young Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead)\, Day of the Dead is arguably Romero’s darkest and most philosophical entry. SUMMARY:Cannibal Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of the 13+ Films of Halloween. \n45th Anniversary! 35mm Screening! \nFew films have ignited as much outrage—or cemented such a place in cinematic history—as Cannibal Holocaust. Directed by Ruggero Deodato\, this harrowing exploitation shocker pushed boundaries with its blend of cinéma vérité realism\, graphic violence\, and commentary on media sensationalism. Banned in multiple countries and famously mistaken for a snuff film upon release (leading to Deodato’s arrest)\, it remains one of the most controversial films ever made (not the least of which is due to the death of several animals on film). But beneath the gore lies a biting critique of Western imperialism and media ethics. The film rests on the mordant observation that zombies or no zombies\, chances are the living will tear each other apart\, cementing Cannibal Holocaust as not just a provocation\, but a pivotal—if deeply disturbing—milestone in horror history. \nThe film’s true intentions belie its deceptively simple concept; a university professor (Robert Kerman)\, is sent to the Amazon to determine the fate of a group of documentary filmmakers who were there to study remote cannibal tribes in an area known as The Green Inferno. What professor Monroe discovers is incomprehensible. The documentary crew—in an effort to capture more salacious footage—resorted to the rape\, torture and murder of their subjects\, only to subsequently meet that same fate themselves. \nDeodato’s film was not the first to wreak havoc on the international scene and it has surely proven to not be the last.  Nevertheless\, unlike so many other films defined as controversial in their day that have later proven to be tame—or even innocuous—as time wears on\, Cannibal Holocaust is still as unredeemable and unrelenting a spectacle as ever committed to celluloid. \nDue to graphic content\, including extreme violence and animal cruelty\, no one under 18 will be permitted. For more information\, please see the IMDB Parents Guide for this film. \nTry one of our 13 Cocktails of Halloween\, available at Eden Bar starting October 1: \n \nTHE INFERNO\nBloody Mary with Jalapeño-infused Mezcal
