SUMMARY:Daisies (4k Restoration)
DESCRIPTION:4K Restoration! \nDive into the magic of cinema with the Enzian Film Club! Join us for an enriching experience where film enthusiasts and novices alike can explore classic films in a new light. Each session features a short presentation by esteemed professors from local colleges\, followed by collaborative discussions that bring fresh insights and foster a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking. Part of our Saturday Matinee Classics series\, the Enzian Film Club is your gateway to understanding and enjoying timeless cinematic masterpieces in a vibrant\, community-focused setting. \nFeaturing an Enzian Film Club discussion on “Experimental Cinema” with Nicole Richter\, PhD from Rollins College! \nIf the entire world is bad\, why shouldn’t we be? Adopting this insolent attitude as their guiding philosophy\, a pair of hedonistic young women (Ivana Karbanová and Jitka Cerhová)\, both named Marie\, embark on a gleefully debauched odyssey of gluttony\, giddy destruction\, and antipatriarchal resistance\, in which nothing is safe from their nihilistic pursuit of pleasure. But what happens when the fun is over? \nMatching her anarchic message with an equally radical aesthetic\, director Věra Chytilová\, with the close collaboration of cinematographer Jaroslav Kučera\, unleashes an optical storm of fluctuating film stocks\, kaleidoscopic montages\, cartoonish stopmotion cutouts\, and surreal costumes designed by Ester Krumbachová\, who also cowrote the script. The result is Daisies\, the most defiant provocation of the Czechoslovak New Wave\, an exuberant call to rebellion and widely considered one of the great works of feminist cinema.

SUMMARY:The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
DESCRIPTION:Dive into the magic of cinema with the Enzian Film Club! \nFeaturing an Enzian Film Club discussion on “Politics on Film” with Barry Sandler of the University of Central Florida. \nDecorated Korean War veteran Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey)\, becomes an unwitting pawn in an international communist conspiracy. Brainwashed by enemy forces\, Shaw is programmed to assassinate a U.S. presidential candidate\, under the manipulation of his domineering mother—a ruthless political operative married to a senator. Major Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra)\, a fellow soldier plagued by nightmares\, begins to uncover the truth\, racing to stop a plot that could destabilize American democracy. \nDirected by John Frankenheimer (Seconds)\, and released at the height of Cold War tensions\, The Manchurian Candidate captures the paranoia of McCarthy-era America and the widespread fear of communist infiltration. The film’s portrayal of political manipulation\, authoritarianism\, and ideological extremism remains eerily prescient\, offering a sharp critique of both foreign threats and internal political corruption.

SUMMARY:Night of the Living Dead (4k Restoration)
\nFeaturing an Enzian Film Club discussion by David T. Meyers from Full Sail University! \nShot outside of Pittsburgh at a fraction of the cost of a Hollywood feature\, by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark\, George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is one of the great stories of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time. A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of flesh-eating ghouls newly arisen from their graves\, Romero’s claustrophobic vision of a late-sixties America (literally) tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre\, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary\, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in the lead role. \nAfter decades of poor-quality prints and video transfers\, Night of the Living Dead can finally be seen for the immaculately crafted film that it is thanks to a new 4K restoration\, scanned from the original camera negative and supervised by Romero himself. Stark\, haunting\, and more relevant than ever\, Night of the Living Dead is back. \nAbout the speaker: David T. Meyers is the Film Department Chairman at Full Sail University\, where he teaches the History of Motion Picture Arts. He began his film career working with legendary director George Romero on the feature film MONKEY SHINES. \nTry one of our 13 Cocktails of Halloween\, available at Eden Bar starting October 1: \n \nTHEY’RE COMING TO GET YOU\, MIDORI\nGin\, Midori\, Honey\, Lime\, Mint\, Absinthe Float

In 1985\, the production of the original film was possible thanks to a French-Japanese collaboration and 30 years later\, Studiocanal and Kadokawa replicated this partnership to restore the film. Ran has been restored in 4K by the French laboratory Éclair\, under Studiocanal’s supervision. Based on an original negative\, the majority of the restoration work was done manually\, image by image. Color grading was approved by Masaharu Ueda\, one of Ran‘s three cinematographers and a close associate of Kurosawa’s.

SUMMARY:Stalker
DESCRIPTION:Enzian Film Club: Summer School Edition\nSummer school is in session! Our Enzian Film Club professors are on a well-deserved vacation\, but you’ve still got a lot to learn. Join us June–August for screenings and talkbacks with Enzian programmers and community guests\, and keep your brain (or at least your social skills) sharp until our return to class in September. It might not be Driver’s Ed\, but it’s better than independent study. \nOne of the most immersive and rarefied experiences in the history of cinema\, Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker embarks on a metaphysical journey through an enigmatic post-apocalyptic landscape. A hired guide—the “Stalker” of the title—leads a writer and a scientist into the heart of the Zone\, the restricted site of a long-ago disaster\, where the three men eventually zero in on the Room\, a place rumored to fulfill one’s most deeply held desires. \nAdapting a science-fiction novel by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky\, and making what would be his final Soviet feature\, Tarkovsky created a challenging and visually stunning work\, his painstaking attention to material detail and sense of organic atmosphere further enriched by this vivid new digital restoration. At once a religious allegory\, a reflection of contemporary political anxieties\, and a meditation on film itself—among many other interpretations—Stalker envelops the viewer by opening up a multitude of possible meanings.

Aimlessly passing their days in the concrete environs of their dead-end suburbia\, Vinz (Vincent Cassel)\, Hubert (Hubert Koundé)\, and Saïd (Saïd Taghmaoui)—a Jew\, an African\, and an Arab—give human faces to France’s immigrant populations\, their bristling resentment at their marginalization slowly simmering until it reaches a climactic boiling point. A work of tough beauty\, La haine is a landmark of contemporary French cinema and a gripping reflection of its country’s ongoing identity crisis.

Join us June–August for screenings and talkbacks with Enzian programmers and community guests\, and keep your brain (or at least your social skills) sharp until our return to class in September. It might not be Driver’s Ed\, but it’s better than independent study. \n  \nFeat. a post-film “Enzian Film Club” discussion with GLAAD Media Award recipient Barry Sandler!  \nStephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons\, The Queen) was at the forefront of the British cinematic revival of the mid-1980s\, and the delightfully transgressive My Beautiful Laundrette is his greatest triumph of the period. Working from an Oscar®-nominated script by Hanif Kureishi\, who was soon to be an internationally renowned writer\, Frears tells an uncommon love story that takes place between a young South London Pakistani man (Gordon Warnecke)\, who decides to open an upscale laundromat to make his family proud\, and his childhood friend\, a street punk (3-time Academy® Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis\, in his breakthrough role) who volunteers to help make his dream a reality. This culture-clash comedy is also a subversive work of social realism that dares to address racism\, homophobia\, and sociopolitical marginalization in Margaret Thatcher’s England. \nAbout Barry Sandler: \nBarry Sandler (Crimes of Passion\, The Other Side of Midnight) is a pioneering screenwriter best known for Making Love (1982)\, the first major studio film to depict LGBTQIA+ characters positively. The film was recently honored with a 40th anniversary celebration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2002\, The Advocate named him one of America’s most influential gay artists. Since 2003\, he has taught screenwriting and film history at the University of Central Florida. Sandler’s work has also earned numerous honors\, including the GLAAD Media Award and the Outfest Gay Pioneer Award.

SUMMARY:Man Ray: Return To Reason
DESCRIPTION:4K Restoration! \nThe four films Man Ray directed between 1923 and 1929\, LE RETOUR À LA RAISON\, EMAK-BAKIA\, L’ÉTOILE DE MER and LES MYSTÈRES DU CHÂTEAU DU DÉ represent a high watermark of early European avant-garde cinema\, a seminal nexus of experimental technique\, surrealist narrative\, and playful abstraction as suffused with dark eroticism. In these films Ray began discovering the limitless possibilities of montage as well as the direct application onto celluloid of objects such as salt\, pepper\, pins\, and thumbtacks. Juxtaposing undulating geometric patterns\, a twirling fairground ride\, and a female nude\, among other striking images\, Ray finds subconscious correspondences among seemingly incongruous materials and figures. \nIn celebration of the hundredth anniversary of LE RETOUR À LA RAISON\, the Jim Jarmusch-Carter Logan combo Sqürl present MAN RAY: RETURN TO REASON\, with a newly-recorded drone rock soundtrack for that title as well as the three other Ray films. The band’s cosmic sounds complement Ray’s work by conjuring the beautiful\, ineffable\, haunting\, and sublime. \nThe restoration process was led by Womanray and Cinenovo sourcing original prints from various parts of the world\, in partnership with La Cinémathèque française\, the Centre Pompidou\, the Library of Congress\, the French CNC and Cineteca di Bologna.
