SUMMARY:Cure
DESCRIPTION:4K Restoration! \nFeaturing a Science on Screen® presentation on Trauma Focus Hypnotherapy with Bradley Mack\, MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Registered Mental Health Intern at Lyon Counseling! \n“One of the very best films by the extremely talented Kiyoshi Kurosawa…an absolute master of light\, framing\, and pacing” – Martin Scorsese \nKiyoshi Kurosawa’s spellbinding international breakthrough established him as one of the leaders of the emerging new wave of Japanese horror while pushing the genre into uncharted realms of philosophical and existential exploration. A string of shocking\, seemingly unmotivated murders—each committed by a different person yet bearing the same grisly hallmarks—leads Detective Kenichi Takabe (Koji Yakusho\, PERFECT DAYS\, 13 ASSASSINS) into a labyrinthine investigation to discover what connects them\, and into a disturbing game of cat and mouse with an enigmatic amnesiac (Masato Hagiwara) who may be evil incarnate. Awash in a mood of hushed\, hypnotic dread\, Cure is a tour de force of psychological tension and a hallucinatory journey into the darkest recesses of the human mind. \nAbout the speaker: Bradley Mack has his MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Palm Beach Atlantic University\, where he also earned his under graduate degree in Musical Theatre. Before going back to school for his masters\, he performed professionally as an actor and singer\, and was a teaching artist for several years. As a therapist\, he incorporates person centered therapy\, working together with patients to uncover what’s going on under the surface and bringing that to awareness. He also infuses solution focus to develop healthy coping mechanisms and to help clients rediscover who they are\, and is trained in Trauma Focus Hypnotherapy. Bradley specializes in anxiety\, depression\, wellness\, and complex trauma.

SUMMARY:Particle Fever
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the recent launch of the Large Hadron Collider’s historic third run with a screening of Particle Fever! Joining us at the theater is Dr Philip Chang\, previous member of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) team and ATLAS Collaboration at the CERN LHC\, who will discuss his experience investigating the electroweak and the Higgs sector of the Standard Model (SM)\, as well as developing a novel charged-particle track finding algorithm to address the challenges of exponentially increasing computing resource usage at the LHC. \nImagine being able to watch as Edison turned on the first light bulb\, or as Franklin received his first jolt of electricity. \nFor the first time\, a film gives audiences a front row seat to a significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough as it happens. Particle Fever follows six brilliant scientists during the launch of the Large Hadron Collider\, marking the start-up of the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet\, pushing the edge of human innovation. \nAs they seek to unravel the mysteries of the universe\, 10\,000 scientists from over 100 countries joined forces in pursuit of a single goal: to recreateconditions that existed just moments after the Big Bang and find the Higgs boson\, potentially explaining the origin of all matter. But our heroes confront an even bigger challenge: have we reached our limit in understanding why we exist? \nDirected by Mark Levinson\, a physicist turned filmmaker\, from the inspiration and initiative of producer David Kaplan and masterfully edited by Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now\, The English Patient\, The Godfather trilogy)\, Particle Fever is a celebration of discovery\, revealing the very human stories behind this epic machine. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Philip Chang is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics at University of Florida.  After receiving his PhD at University of Illinois\, Urbana Champaign\, he started his postdoctoral fellow position at UC San Diego as a member of Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) team at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of CERN in Geneva.  In the past\, Chang had also been a member of ATLAS Collaboration at the CERN LHC. Chang’s primary focus is on the investigation of the electroweak and the Higgs sector of the Standard Model (SM) through studying production of multiple massive particles. Chang has also been developing a novel charged-particle track finding algorithm to address the challenges of exponentially increasing computing resource usage at the LHC\, leveraging industry advancements in heterogeneous computing and artificial intelligence techniques.

SUMMARY:Father of the Cyborgs
DESCRIPTION:Certified Fresh with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! \nAfter the film\, please join us for a virtual discussion with the subject Dr. Phil Kennedy and director David Burke. \nDr. Phil Kennedy was once a famous neuroscientist. In the late 1990s he made global headlines for implanting several wire electrodes in the brain of a paralyzed man and then teaching the locked-in patient to control a computer cursor with his mind. He was compared to Alexander Graham Bell in The Washington Post and became known as ‘The Father of the Cyborgs’. He made headlines more recently in 2014 when he travelled to South America and had tiny electrodes implanted inside his own brain in order to continue his research. The documentary examines the ethics of self-experimentation and the unintended consequences of a future where technology and human brains combine.

The presentation will explore what makes dogs so special to us. Is it their intelligence\, their problem-solving ability\, their sheer smarts? No; in fact dogs are not so remarkable in these areas. But they are remarkable at understanding humans\, and we love them for that. We’ll review some research from the field of animal behavior which reveals that dogs know us better than we know ourselves. This specialization is why dogs have such an important place in the emotional lives of those who identify as dog people. \nDr. Yankelevitz is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Rollins College with a focus on the applied and experimental analysis of human and nonhuman animal behavior. Some areas of interest include using behavior analysis to help children be safe around dogs\, to train dogs and their people to live together better\, and to help cats become more adoptable. Her courses include Dog is Love: The Science of Human-Animal Interaction\, a rat behavior lab\, and Comparative Animal Behavior. Her volunteer animal shelter work has included working with every sort of dog imaginable\, fostering over 125 cats\, and running a foster program. Her own dog\, cat\, and birds provide lots of fun research ideas and insights. \nWhen\, by executive decree\, all the canine pets of Megasaki City are exiled to a vast garbage-dump called Trash Island\, 12-year-old Atari sets off alone in a miniature Junior-Turbo Prop and flies across the river in search of his bodyguard-dog\, Spots. There\, with the assistance of a pack of newly-found mongrel friends\, he begins an epic journey that will decide the fate and future of the entire Prefecture.
