SUMMARY:Her
DESCRIPTION:Featuring a discussion with Dr. Johnathan Mell on human-computer interaction\, social computing\, and the development of human emotions in computers! \nA sensitive and soulful man earns a living by writing personal letters for other people. Left heartbroken after his marriage ends\, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) becomes fascinated with a new operating system which reportedly develops into an intuitive and unique entity in its own right. He starts the program and meets “Samantha” (Scarlett Johansson)\, whose bright voice reveals a sensitive\, playful personality. Though “friends” initially\, the relationship soon deepens into love. \nDr. Johnathan Mell is a professor\, researcher\, and technology innovator working at the crossroads of artificial intelligence\, human behavior\, and engineering.  Dr. Mell is faculty at the University of Central Florida\, where he lectures on AI in video games\, and leads the ScionAI lab\, which researches topics relating to making and understanding more human-like AI systems.  He received his Ph.D. and Master’s in Computer Science from University of Southern California\, and holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science as well as a second bachelor’s degree from the Wharton School of Business.  Dr. Mell draws inspiration from the real-world science that inspired popular shows and movies relating to AI\, including Star Trek and Westworld\, and appears regularly at both academic conferences and popular science venues. His current work is focused on artificial negotiation\, the game Diplomacy\, and social emotions in AI.

SUMMARY:Particle Fever
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the recent launch of the Large Hadron Collider’s historic third run with a screening of Particle Fever! Joining us at the theater is Dr Philip Chang\, previous member of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) team and ATLAS Collaboration at the CERN LHC\, who will discuss his experience investigating the electroweak and the Higgs sector of the Standard Model (SM)\, as well as developing a novel charged-particle track finding algorithm to address the challenges of exponentially increasing computing resource usage at the LHC. \nImagine being able to watch as Edison turned on the first light bulb\, or as Franklin received his first jolt of electricity. \nFor the first time\, a film gives audiences a front row seat to a significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough as it happens. Particle Fever follows six brilliant scientists during the launch of the Large Hadron Collider\, marking the start-up of the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet\, pushing the edge of human innovation. \nAs they seek to unravel the mysteries of the universe\, 10\,000 scientists from over 100 countries joined forces in pursuit of a single goal: to recreateconditions that existed just moments after the Big Bang and find the Higgs boson\, potentially explaining the origin of all matter. But our heroes confront an even bigger challenge: have we reached our limit in understanding why we exist? \nDirected by Mark Levinson\, a physicist turned filmmaker\, from the inspiration and initiative of producer David Kaplan and masterfully edited by Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now\, The English Patient\, The Godfather trilogy)\, Particle Fever is a celebration of discovery\, revealing the very human stories behind this epic machine. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Philip Chang is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics at University of Florida.  After receiving his PhD at University of Illinois\, Urbana Champaign\, he started his postdoctoral fellow position at UC San Diego as a member of Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) team at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of CERN in Geneva.  In the past\, Chang had also been a member of ATLAS Collaboration at the CERN LHC. Chang’s primary focus is on the investigation of the electroweak and the Higgs sector of the Standard Model (SM) through studying production of multiple massive particles. Chang has also been developing a novel charged-particle track finding algorithm to address the challenges of exponentially increasing computing resource usage at the LHC\, leveraging industry advancements in heterogeneous computing and artificial intelligence techniques.

SUMMARY:The Illusionist
DESCRIPTION:Join us before the film for a dive into the art and science of illusion with acclaimed magician Nathan Coe Marsh! \nIn 1900s Vienna\, mesmeric entertainer Eisenheim’s (Edward Norton) magical abilities are wowing the crowds\, with an act that ranges from mere tricks to an apparent capacity to raise the dead. However\, he has also long been in love with Duchess Sophie von Teschen (Jessica Biel(\, which puts him in dangerous competition with the violent\, scheming Crown Prince Leopold\, who jumps at the opportunity to have the magician arrested grounds of necromancy. \nSeen on NBC\, CBS\, FOX\, The CW\, and at live appearances in 13 countries; Nathan Coe Marsh performs “mindblowing” (WESH NBC 2) magic that “blurs the line between reality and illusion” (Hawaii Arts Digest). \nMarsh’s work has been seen in venues as diverse as the yacht of an NFL team owner; to the Top of the World Club in Thule\, Greenland; to regular feature performances at the Magic Castle in Hollywood; to events in French Polynesia\, the Mexican Riviera; Central America; the mountains of Banff; and on Penn & Teller’s prime time TV series Fool Us. He was chosen from an international search in Vanish Magazine for a ten-week run as the first headliner of The Magical Mystery Show at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui\, Hawai’i. \nMarsh has toured the world performing for deployed military personnel on behalf of the US Department of Defense\, and has toured the USA lecturing on magic to serious students of the art. He is a regular contributor to Genii\, the world’s oldest trade journal for magicians. \nNathan headlines The Orlando Improv on June 15.

SUMMARY:Father of the Cyborgs
DESCRIPTION:Certified Fresh with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! \nAfter the film\, please join us for a virtual discussion with the subject Dr. Phil Kennedy and director David Burke. \nDr. Phil Kennedy was once a famous neuroscientist. In the late 1990s he made global headlines for implanting several wire electrodes in the brain of a paralyzed man and then teaching the locked-in patient to control a computer cursor with his mind. He was compared to Alexander Graham Bell in The Washington Post and became known as ‘The Father of the Cyborgs’. He made headlines more recently in 2014 when he travelled to South America and had tiny electrodes implanted inside his own brain in order to continue his research. The documentary examines the ethics of self-experimentation and the unintended consequences of a future where technology and human brains combine.

SUMMARY:Isle of Dogs
DESCRIPTION:10:30-11AM: Doors are open for theater seating\, with Pet Rescue by Judy on-site with some adoptable pups\n11AM: Presentation by Dr. Rachelle Yankelevitz of Rollins College\n11:20-11:25AM: Q&A with Dr. Yankelevitz\n11:30AM: Film begins\n1:15-1:25pm: Film ends \nPrior to the film screening\, enjoy a presentation by Dr. Rachelle Yankelevitz\, followed by a brief Q&A. The presentation will explore what makes dogs so special to us. Is it their intelligence\, their problem-solving ability\, their sheer smarts? No; in fact dogs are not so remarkable in these areas. But they are remarkable at understanding humans\, and we love them for that. We’ll review some research from the field of animal behavior which reveals that dogs know us better than we know ourselves. This specialization is why dogs have such an important place in the emotional lives of those who identify as dog people. \nDr. Yankelevitz is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Rollins College with a focus on the applied and experimental analysis of human and nonhuman animal behavior. Some areas of interest include using behavior analysis to help children be safe around dogs\, to train dogs and their people to live together better\, and to help cats become more adoptable. Her courses include Dog is Love: The Science of Human-Animal Interaction\, a rat behavior lab\, and Comparative Animal Behavior. Her volunteer animal shelter work has included working with every sort of dog imaginable\, fostering over 125 cats\, and running a foster program. Her own dog\, cat\, and birds provide lots of fun research ideas and insights. \nWhen\, by executive decree\, all the canine pets of Megasaki City are exiled to a vast garbage-dump called Trash Island\, 12-year-old Atari sets off alone in a miniature Junior-Turbo Prop and flies across the river in search of his bodyguard-dog\, Spots. There\, with the assistance of a pack of newly-found mongrel friends\, he begins an epic journey that will decide the fate and future of the entire Prefecture.
