SUMMARY:Ran (4k Restoration)
DESCRIPTION:40th Anniversary Screening! \nCelebrating 40-years of Enzian Theater\, each month we will highlight a classic film from 1985 to illustrate the lasting impact of the films of the era and the legacy of Central Florida’s only non-profit arthouse movie theater.  Thank you for being part of our 4-decade contribution to arts culture in Orlando. \nEnzian Film Club:\nDive into the magic of cinema with the Enzian Film Club! Join us for an enriching experience where film enthusiasts and novices alike can explore classic films in a new light. Each session features a short presentation by esteemed professors from local colleges\, followed by collaborative discussions that bring fresh insights and foster a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking. Part of our Saturday Matinee Classics series\, the Enzian Film Club is your gateway to understanding and enjoying timeless cinematic masterpieces in a vibrant\, community-focused setting. \nFeaturing an Enzian Film Club discussion with Milt Moise from Rollins College! \nAkira Kurosawa’s Academy Award-winning adaptation of William Shakespeare’s King Lear\, Ran considers the disastrous consequences of Lord Hidetora Ichimonji’s (Tatsuya Nakadai) decision to split his kingdom among his three sons. \nAbout the Restoration:\nThirty years after its original release\, Studiocanal decided to restore Ran in 4K in collaboration with the Japanese company Kadokawa. In 1985\, the production of the original film was possible thanks to a French-Japanese collaboration and 30 years later\, Studiocanal and Kadokawa replicated this partnership to restore the film. Ran has been restored in 4K by the French laboratory Éclair\, under Studiocanal’s supervision. Based on an original negative\, the majority of the restoration work was done manually\, image by image. Color grading was approved by Masaharu Ueda\, one of Ran‘s three cinematographers and a close associate of Kurosawa’s.

SUMMARY:The Raid 2
DESCRIPTION:35mm Screening! \nGareth Evans’ blistering sequel to The Raid: Redemption redefined modern action cinema. This 150 minute epic picks up moments after the original film ends\, following undercover cop Rama (Iko Uwais) as he plunges into Jakarta’s brutal criminal underworld to protect his family and expose corruption within the police force. \nFamed for its intricate choreography\, visceral fight scenes\, and bold cinematic style\, The Raid 2 expanded the claustrophobic intensity of its predecessor into an epic crime saga. Its brutal martial arts sequences have earned it (along with The Raid: Redemption) a legendary place in mid-2010s action cinema\, even cited by director Chad Stahelski as a primary influence on his John Wick series!

SUMMARY:Nashville
DESCRIPTION:One of the most distinctive voices in American cinema\, Robert Altman (1925–2006) defied Hollywood conventions with a maverick spirit\, crafting films known for their overlapping dialogue and large ensemble casts\, and often using wide master shots to stage deeply intimate sagas. At 45\, when he made his first successful studio film\, Altman was far too old to be a ’60s counterculture icon\, yet he stands as perhaps the most anti-establishment director of that era. From the satirical bite of M*A*S*H (1970) to the sprawling\, multi-layered narratives of Nashville (1975) and Short Cuts (1993)\, Altman’s resume is a masterwork of subversion—spanning revisionist Westerns (McCabe & Mrs. Miller)\, film noir (The Long Goodbye)\, psychoanalytical family drama (3 Women)\, American politics (Tanner ’88)\, and later skewering Hollywood’s vapidity with his Oscar®-nominated 1992 film The Player. \nAs we celebrate 7-time Academy Award nominee Robert Altman’s 100th birthday\, we honor a filmmaker who turned chaos into art and left an indelible mark on cinema as a medium of wickedly boundless possibilities. \nNashville: \n50th Anniversary! \nNominated for 5 Academy Awards® and winner of Best Original Song (“I’m Easy”) maverick director Robert Altman’s ambitious\, sprawling ensemble drama that paints a vibrant\, satirical portrait of American life\, fame\, and politics through the intersecting lives of 24 characters over five days in the country music capital of the world. With a staggering 7 Golden Globe nominations just for acting\, Altman’s assembled troupe includes iconic performances from the likes of Keith Carradine\, Karen Black\, Shelley Duvall\, Ned Beatty\, Geraldine Chaplin\, Henry Gibson\, Scott Glenn\, Jeff Goldblum\, Barbara Harris and Michael Murphy. \nA biting satire of both music and politics\, Nashville is considered one of Altman’s greatest masterpieces and a defining film of the 1970s\, lauded for its layered storytelling\, themes of ambition\, identity\, disillusionment\, and the spectacle of American culture which converge in a final act that has to be seen to be believed.

SUMMARY:Arrebato (Rapture)
DESCRIPTION:4K restoration! \nARREBATO’s dimension-shattering blend of heroin\, sex\, and Super-8 is the final word in cinemania. \nHorror movie director José (Eusebio Poncela\, Matador) is adrift in a sea of doubt and drugs. As his belated second feature nears completion\, his reclusive bubble is popped by two events: a sudden reappearance from an ex-girlfriend (Cecilia Roth\, All About My Mother) and a package from past acquaintance Pedro: a reel of Super-8 film\, an audiotape\, and a door key. From there\, the boundaries of time\, space\, and sexuality are erased as José is once more sucked into Pedro’s vampiric orbit. Together\, they attempt the ultimate hallucinogenic catharsis through a moebius strip of filming and being filmed. \nLong unavailable internationally\, Arrebato has since been rediscovered as a cult masterpiece — a queer-coded\, avant-garde horror tale often described as Spain’s answer to Videodrome or Eraserhead. Legendary director Pedro Almodóvar has cited it as a major influence\, and its reputation has continued to grow for those drawn to the darker\, drug-fueled edges of cinematic obsession. \nFreaky Fridays ticket prices include a free popcorn and soda or lemonade for all attendees! Alcohol can be purchased at Eden Bar. Regular food service will not be available for Freaky Friday events. So\, come early\, and fuel up outside for the night ahead!

SUMMARY:Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass
DESCRIPTION:Screening as part of “Animation August“!\n \nThese are not your childhood cartoons. Celebrate some of the boldest and most visionary works in modern animation during Animation August at Enzian! \nLaunching the program is 2-time Academy Award® nominee Don Hertzfeldt’s World of Tomorrow Trilogy (2016–2020)\, a profound and darkly funny meditation on memory\, technology\, and the fragility of the human experience. From Japan\, Masaaki Yuasa’s Mind Game (2004) explodes onto the screen with fever-dream energy and unrestrained psychedelic imagination\, pushing animation’s limits in both form and philosophy. Rounding out the lineup is Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass (2024). 20 years in the making\, this haunting new dreamscape from the Brothers Quay—masters of stop-motion surrealism—is a gothic\, ghostly descent into the subconscious. Join us for a collection of films that promise to challenge\, mesmerize\, and linger long after the credits roll. Please note\, this animation program is not intended for children and contains adult themes and content. \nUnleash your inner “Ani-Maniac” and see all three films with a discounted series pass! \nSanitorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass: \nProduced and presented by Christopher Nolan. In their first feature in 20 years\, Stephen and Timothy Quay return to adapt the work of Polish writer Bruno Schulz with a mixture of stop motion puppetry and live action. A ghostly train journey on a forgotten branch line transports a son\, Jozef\, visiting his dying Father in a remote Galician Sanatorium. Upon arrival\, Jozef finds the Sanatorium entirely moribund and run by a dubious Doctor Gotard\, who tells him that his father’s death\, the death that has struck him in his country\, has not yet occurred and that here they are always late by a certain interval of time of which the length cannot be defined. Jozef will come to realize that the Sanatorium is a floating world halfway between sleep and wakefulness and that time and events cannot be measured in any tangible form. \nAbout the Quay Brothers: Identical twins Stephen Quay and Timothy Quay\, known as the Brothers Quay\, are two of the most distinct filmmakers of our time. Their stop-motion animations have introduced a generation of viewers to a lyrical darkness not often associated with animation. Influenced by Central and Eastern European artists and writers like Walerian Borowczyk\, Jan Švankmajer and Franz Kafka\, their work creates haunting\, miniature worlds of uncanny puppets and atmospheric detail that reflects the dark psychology resulting from a century of industrial warfare\, surrealist art\, and dialectical politics.

SUMMARY:The Short Films of Marie Menken
DESCRIPTION:All free La CinOMAthéque screenings will take place in the Truist Auditorium at the Orlando Museum of Art. \nACCESS FOR ALL AT OMA presents: \nLa CinOMAthéque: A collaboration between OMA and Enzian\, with generous support provided by the Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program. \nThe Orlando Museum of Art is thrilled to announce the launch of La CinOMAthéque in partnership with the Enzian Theater\, as part of its “Access for All at OMA\,” an all-new program offering FREE admission to the museum! \nAccess for All at OMA is a monthly free day dedicated to the community. La CinOMAthéque will be a series of 6 bimonthly free screenings of experimental\, avant-garde\, art films in the Truist auditorium at OMA on Access for All day. \nEach screening will be introduced by a UCF film professor and include a talkback with OMA Chief Curator Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon and Enzian Programming Manager Tim Anderson. \n  \nThe Short Films of Marie Menken: \nMarie Menken (1910-1970) is the unsung heroine of the American avant-garde cinema. A mentor\, muse and major influence for such key experimental filmmakers as Kenneth Anger\, Stan Brakhage\, Jonas Mekas and Andy Warhol\, Menken created an extraordinary body of exuberant and stunningly beautiful films shaped\, above all\, by her intuitive understanding of handheld cinematography. Beginning with her celebrated first film\, Visual Variations on Noguchi (1945)\, Menken used the hand-cranked Bolex camera favored by avant-garde filmmakers to introduce a new agility\, grace and spontaneity into experimental cinema\, a lightness of camera and form hitherto unseen in American film. With Noguchi\, Menken also began a spirited dialogue between cinema and the plastic and painterly arts that extends across her films in a witty yet deeply insightful exploration of the formal language and methodology specific to those schools and painters with whom Menken was close – from the Abstract Expressionist drip painting humorously critiqued in Drips in Strips (1963)\, to the factory production of Pop art in the revelatory Andy Warhol (1964) and the Fluxus practice of Robert Watts in Watts with Eggs (1967).  \nFeaturing:\nWatts with Eggs (1967\, 2.5 min)\nWrestling (1964\, 8 min)\nVisual Variations on Noguchi (1945\, 4 min)\nNotebook (1962\, 10 min)\nLights (1966\, 6.5 min)\nGo Go Go! SUMMARY:Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
DESCRIPTION:35mm Screening! \nThe breakout international hit that propelled Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar to global fame\, Women on the Verge of Nervous Breakdown is a wild\, vibrant farce tinged with heartbreak. The film follows actress Pepa Marcos (Carmen Maura) as her life unravels after being abruptly dumped by her lover. With its madcap pacing\, surreal humor\, and stylish flair\, the film became a defining work of post-Franco Spanish cinema—boldly exploring themes of female desire\, emotional instability\, and independence. \n“Women on the Verge” also sparked controversy upon release. Its candid depiction of women’s mental health\, sexuality\, and tranquilizer use challenged more conservative audiences and critics. In Spain\, the film both scandalized and thrilled a society still adjusting to democratic freedoms\, while abroad\, it introduced Almodóvar’s unapologetically eccentric and feminist lens to a wider audience. \nQLatinx will be in attendance and tabling in the lobby!

SUMMARY:Emma (1996)
DESCRIPTION:2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. In honor of this literary giant\, Enzian Theater and the Winter Park Library will celebrate with “A Year with Jane Austen”. Scheduled throughout the year\, The Winter Park Library will read each of Austen’s six novels as well as screen various adaptations of the accompanying films and miniseries at both the Library and at Enzian Theater. \nWelcome to a time where Empire-waisted wit is sharp\, and love is found in the most unexpected of places! Where the art of conversation is as important as the plot itself—often more so—and the pursuit of happiness is a delicate dance of propriety and passion. With our special “A Year with Austen” series\, you can sit back\, sip your tea\, and enjoy a romp through a pastoral landscape\, where everyone may be too proud or too prejudiced\, but they’re always too fabulous to resist! \nEmma: \nIn this adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel\, pretty socialite Emma Woodhouse (Gwyneth Paltrow) entertains herself by playing matchmaker for those around her. Her latest “project” is Harriet Smith\, an unpretentious debutant\, while Emma herself receives the attentions of the dashing Frank Churchill (Ewan McGregor). However\, Emma’s attempts at matchmaking cause more problems than solutions and may ultimately jeopardize her own chance at love and happiness. \nWith an all-star cast including Toni Collette\, Alan Cumming\, Jeremy Northam and Greta Scacchi\, Academy Award®–nominee Douglas McGrath (Bullets Over Broadway) has crafted\, along with Sense and Sensibility the greatest Austen adaptation of the 1990s. \n

SUMMARY:Mind Game
\nMind Game: \nLoser Nishi\, too wimpy to try to save his childhood sweetheart from gangsters\, is shot by a soccer-playing psychopath and projected into the afterlife. In this limbo\, God – shown as a series of rapidly changing characters – tells him to walk toward the light. But Nishi runs like hell in the other direction and returns to Earth a changed man\, driven to live each moment to the fullest. An exhilarating and wildly entertaining ride\, this mind-bending and unconstrained cult classic is the feature film debut from director Masaaki Yuasa (NIGHT IS SHORT\, WALK ON GIRL and DEVILMAN CRYBABY). \nAbout Masaaki Yuasa: Widely regarded as one of the most imaginative and influential filmmakers working in animation\, celebrated Japanese director Masaaki Yuasa is one of contemporary anime’s most prolific auteurs. His energetic and boundary-pushing style has lent his humor and dynamism to genres as diverse as psychedelic thrillers\, transcendent rock-operas and sweetly subversive teen romances. Since his groundbreaking debut with Mind Game in 2004\, he has consistently pushed the artistic potential of animation. His previous studio Science Saru\, which he co-founded in 2013\, produced hits such as “Devilman Crybaby\,” “Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!” and Netflix’s “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.” Yuasa has gone on to direct episodes of Adventure Time\, the Annecy Award-winning Lu Over the Wall (2017)\, and the Golden Globe-nominated Inu-Oh (2021).

SUMMARY:It's Never Over\, Jeff Buckley
DESCRIPTION:Includes a post-film screening of 26 minutes of exclusive\, remastered footage from a rare solo performance in Cambridge\, MA. \nBefore his untimely death in 1997\, rising star Jeff Buckley had released just one album\, but his talent was undeniable and his spirit was irresistible. Now\, the depth of his legacy is explored through never-before-seen footage\, rare voice messages\, and testimonials from friends and loved ones. Amy Berg (JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE\, WEST OF MEMPHIS) crafts a deeply compassionate and lyrical portrait of the legendary musician\, offering a view into the inner world of an artist who burned brightly and briefly. Berg balances the tragedy of Buckley’s sudden loss with moments of joy\, love\, and artistic discovery\, letting his memory and music—including footage of haunting live performances—resonate. Like his music\, IT’S NEVER OVER\, JEFF BUCKLEY is tender\, searching\, and full of life. \nVery few were fortunate enough to witness Jeff Buckley live\, but those who did often described it as transcendent\, jaw-dropping\, and emotionally shattering. As part of the theatrical release of It’s Never Over: Jeff Buckley\, Magnolia Pictures will proudly present 26 minutes of exclusive\, remastered footage from a rare solo performance at The Middle East in Cambridge\, MA\, filmed on February 19\, 1994. This previously unreleased set will screen immediately following the film\, offering both longtime fans and newcomers a rare opportunity to experience Jeff Buckley’s raw\, unfiltered brilliance.

SUMMARY:Heartworn Highways
DESCRIPTION:New Restoration! \nIn the mid-‘70s\, filmmaker James Szalapski documented the then-nascent music movement that would become known as “outlaw country.” Inspired\, in part\, by newly-long-haired Willie Nelson’s embrace of hippie attitudes and audiences\, a younger generation of artists including Townes Van Zandt\, David Allan Coe\, Steve Earle\, Charlie Daniels and Guy Clark popularized and developed the outlaw sound. It borrowed from rock\, folk and bluegrass\, with an edge that was missing from mainstream Nashville country. \nMusical highlights include Clark’s brilliant “Desperados Waiting for a Train” and Van Zandt’s emotional “Pancho & Lefty”.  The hard living—and hard partying—lifestyles of outlaw country’s figureheads are played out on screen as we visit Van Zandt’s Austin trailer\, see Coe play in Tennessee State Prison\, join the gang in Nashville’s notorious Wig Wam Tavern and witness a liquor-fueled Christmas at Clark’s house. No wonder the film’s original tagline read: “The best music and the best whiskey come from the same part of the country.” \nThis newly restored edition includes rarely captured performances of the aforementioned musicians as they perfected this then-new style and helped change the course of country music history.

SUMMARY:13 Assassins
DESCRIPTION:35mm Screening! \nSet in 1844 during the final years of the Edo period\, the film follows Shinzaemon Shimada (Kôji Yakusho\, Cure\, Pulse)\, a seasoned and honorable samurai who is tasked with a covert mission: to assassinate Lord Naritsugu Matsudaira\, the sadistic younger brother of the Shogun. Naritsugu’s ruthless behavior and unchecked power threaten the stability of the shogunate. To prevent future chaos\, Shinzaemon recruits twelve other samurai to form a death squad. Together\, the thirteen warriors prepare for a final\, explosive ambush in a remote village\, culminating in a climactic 45-minute battle sequence! \n13 Assassins received widespread acclaim for its direction\, performances\, and especially its brutal\, meticulously choreographed action. A remake of the 1963 film of the same name by Eiichi Kudo\, it is considered one of maverick director Takashi Miike’s (Audition) most accessible and critically respected works\, marking a departure from his usual horror and avant-garde style into a more classical narrative while sacrificing none of his operatic staging.

SUMMARY:Female Trouble
DESCRIPTION:Due to graphic content\, no one under 18 will be permitted to this film. \nGlamour has never been more grotesque than in Female Trouble\, which injects the Hollywood melodrama with anarchic decadence. Divine\, director John Waters’ larger-than-life muse\, engulfs the screen with charisma as Dawn Davenport\, the living embodiment of the film’s lurid mantra\, “Crime is beauty\,” who progresses from a teenage nightmare hell-bent on getting cha-cha heels for Christmas to a fame monster whose egomaniacal impulses land her in the electric chair. \nShot in Waters’ native Baltimore on 16 mm\, with a cast drawn from his beloved troupe of regulars\, the Dreamlanders (including Mink Stole\, David Lochary\, Mary Vivian Pearce\, Edith Massey\, and Cookie Mueller)\, this film—the director’s favorite of his work with Divine—comes to life through the tinsel-toned vision of production designer Vincent Peranio and costume designer/makeup artist Van Smith. An endlessly quotable fan favorite\, Female Trouble offers up perverse pleasures that never fail to satisfy.

SUMMARY:Stalker
DESCRIPTION:Enzian Film Club: Summer School Edition\nSummer school is in session! Our Enzian Film Club professors are on a well-deserved vacation\, but you’ve still got a lot to learn. Join us June–August for screenings and talkbacks with Enzian programmers and community guests\, and keep your brain (or at least your social skills) sharp until our return to class in September. It might not be Driver’s Ed\, but it’s better than independent study. \nOne of the most immersive and rarefied experiences in the history of cinema\, Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker embarks on a metaphysical journey through an enigmatic post-apocalyptic landscape. A hired guide—the “Stalker” of the title—leads a writer and a scientist into the heart of the Zone\, the restricted site of a long-ago disaster\, where the three men eventually zero in on the Room\, a place rumored to fulfill one’s most deeply held desires. \nAdapting a science-fiction novel by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky\, and making what would be his final Soviet feature\, Tarkovsky created a challenging and visually stunning work\, his painstaking attention to material detail and sense of organic atmosphere further enriched by this vivid new digital restoration. At once a religious allegory\, a reflection of contemporary political anxieties\, and a meditation on film itself—among many other interpretations—Stalker envelops the viewer by opening up a multitude of possible meanings.

SUMMARY:The Donn of Tiki
DESCRIPTION:Directors Alex Lamb & Max Well will be in attendance on Saturday\, August 9th at 3:30pm & 6:30pm for in-person Q&As\, including exclusive merch! \nThe life of Donn Beach has been re-written\, embellished\, and\, at times\, flat-out fabricated. But that is what happens with legends; their lore is always better. The same is true of the humble Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt\, maybe born in Texas\, maybe born in Louisiana\, but born nonetheless to become the man who brought Tiki culture to the states. \nThe Donn of Tiki attempts to separate fact from fabrication with the help of modern Tiki legends like Jeff “Beachbum” Berry and Smuggler’s Cove owner Martin Cate\, as well as people who knew him\, historians\, and recently resurfaced audio recordings of Donn himself. Mixing fun retro-style animation\, archival footage\, and expert interview commentary\, this documentary paints a vivid portrait of a man who had an outsized impact on the restaurant business\, Hawaiian tourism\, and the craft cocktail movement\, while also exploring the side alleys of Donn’s life that included affairs\, mob connections\, and all sorts of nefarious activities.

A two-time Academy Award nominee and winner of over 250 other awards\, Hertzfeldt continues to push the boundaries of the medium outside of the studio system.

SUMMARY:Shogun Assassin
DESCRIPTION:45th Anniversary! \nThe legendary midnight movie sensation that firmly embedded samurai mythology within American pop culture consciousness\, this English-dubbed reedit of the first two films in the classic Japanese chanbara series Lone Wolf and Cub is a giddily entertaining\, mesmerizingly gory classic of East-meets-West grindhouse mayhem. \nFollowing the murder of his wife at the hands of an evil shogun\, an avenging ronin (Tomisaburo Wakayama) roams the countryside with his young son—and the boy’s sword-shooting baby carriage—in tow\, dispatching ninja assassins with steely resolve in operatically stylized flurries of hallucinatory violence. With its pulsing synth soundtrack (cowritten by Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere & the Raiders) and delirious action set pieces—kinetically edited whirlwinds of flashing blades\, spurting blood\, and severed limbs—Shogun Assassin proved an instant cult favorite that has bubbled its way up from the underground to the mainstream thanks to its influence on artists ranging from the Wu-Tang Clan to Quentin Tarantino. \nFreaky Fridays ticket prices include a free popcorn and soda or lemonade for all attendees! Alcohol can be purchased at Eden Bar. Regular food service will not be available for Freaky Friday events. So\, come early\, and fuel up outside for the night ahead!
