SUMMARY:Taipei Story
DESCRIPTION:40th Anniversary! \nCelebrating 40-years of Enzian Theater\, each month we will highlight a classic film from 1985 to illustrate the lasting impact of the films of the era and the legacy of Central Florida’s only non-profit arthouse movie theater.  Thank you for being part of our 4-decade contribution to arts culture in Orlando. \nDive into the magic of cinema with the Enzian Film Club! Join us for an enriching experience where film enthusiasts and novices alike can explore classic films in a new light. Each session features a short presentation by esteemed professors from local colleges\, followed by collaborative discussions that bring fresh insights and foster a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking. Part of our Saturday Matinee Classics series\, the Enzian Film Club is your gateway to understanding and enjoying timeless cinematic masterpieces in a vibrant\, community-focused setting. \nFeaturing an Enzian Film Club discussion on framing techniques by Milt Moise of Rollins College! \nEdward Yang’s (Yi Yi\, Best Director: Cannes 2000) long-unavailable second feature is a mournful anatomy of a city caught between the past and the present. Made in collaboration with Yang’s fellow New Taiwan Cinema master Hou Hsiao-hsien (The Assassin\, Best Director: Cannes 2015)—who cowrote the screenplay\, helped finance the project\, and oversaw this restoration— Taipei Story chronicles the growing estrangement between a washed-up baseball player (Hou\, in a rare on-screen performance) working in his family’s textile business and his girlfriend (pop star Tsai Chin)\, who clings to the upward mobility of her career in property development. As the couple’s dreams of marriage and emigration begin to unravel\, Yang’s gaze illuminates the precariousness of domestic life and the desperation of Taiwan’s globalized modernity. \nTaipei Story was restored by Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation World Cinema Project at the Cineteca di Bologna/L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory\, in association with the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique and Hou Hsiao-hsien. \nAbout the speaker: Milt Moise is a Visiting Professor at Rollins College where he teaches courses in film\, television\, and literature. His research examines bipolarity in American fiction and television\, Rastafari epistemology in the TV show Westworld\, and self-referentiality in Caribbean fiction.

SUMMARY:The Short Films of David Lynch
DESCRIPTION:“Walk into a Dream”: The Films of David Lynch\n“Film exists because we can go and have experiences that would be pretty dangerous or strange for us in real life. We can go into a room and walk into a dream. If we didn’t want to upset anyone\, we would make films about sewing\, but even that could be dangerous.”  – David Lynch \nDavid Lynch’s art taps into a deep human fascination with the surreal and the psychological. His talent for transforming the everyday into something eerie\, for weaving emotion into his strange landscapes\, and for exposing the darker side of suburban life resonates universally\, connecting with audiences across cultures and generations in ways few filmmakers achieve. \nFrom teenagers to octogenarians\, Lynch’s fanbase spans generations. His loss will leave an irreplaceable gap in the world of cinema. We invite you to join us in celebrating the life\, legacy\, boundless imagination\, and singular voice of David Lynch. \nThe Short Films of David Lynch: \nEvery work of staggering genius career begins somewhere\, and David Lynch dipped his toes into the black pool of cinema at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with a pair of short films (Six Men Getting Sick and The Alphabet) before moving back to the West Coast to attend the American Film Institute.  From 1967 to 1974 Lynch worked exclusively in short format. \nThese works\, often experimental in nature\, showcase Lynch’s unique ability to evoke emotion and provoke thought in a condensed format. With a signature blend of abstract imagery\, disjointed narratives\, and eerie soundscapes\, Lynch’s short films delve into themes of identity\, fear\, and the subconscious. Unlike his more expansive feature films\, these shorts offer a glimpse into the raw\, unfiltered creativity that has defined Lynch’s career\, allowing audiences to experience his world in bite-sized yet profoundly impactful doses. \nIn continued celebration of the life and legacy of one of films greatest visionaries\, Freaky Fridays is proud to present the Short Films of David Lynch. \nSix Men Getting Sick\n1967\, USA\, 4 minutes\nSix cartoon figures vomit repeatedly. \nThe Alphabet\n1968\, USA\, 4 minutes\nThis experimental short film presents a sick woman’s nightmare involving living representations of the alphabet. \nThe Grandmother\n1970\, USA\, 34 minutes\nA boy plants a seed that grows into a grandmother in this experimental short film. \nThe Amputee: Version 1\n1974\, USA\, 5 minutes\nA double amputee attempts to write a letter while her nurse gets in the way. \nThe Amputee: Version 2\n1974\, USA\, 7 minutes\nA double amputee attempts to write a letter while her nurse gets in the way. \nPremonitions Following an Evil Deed\n1995\, USA\, 1 minute\nPolice discover a naked dead body.

As we prepare for FFF 2025\, happening April 11–20\, we are excited to showcase the 75th Anniversary of this timeless film for free on the Enzian lawn. \nIn Hollywood of the 50’s\, the obscure screenplay writer Joe Gillis (William Holden) who is unable to sell his work to the studios\, is full of debts and thinking in returning to his hometown. He is hired to rework the script of a faded silent film star (Gloria Swanson) who is determined to return to fame\, only to find himself developing a dangerous relationship. \nFrom the unforgettable opening sequence — a body found floating in a decayed mansion’s swimming pool — through the inevitable unfolding of tragic destiny\, Sunset Boulevard is the definitive statement on the dark and desperate side of Hollywood. Winner of three Academy Awards\, director Billy Wilder’s powerful orchestration of the bizarre tale is a true cinematic classic. \nSunset Boulevard is often ranked among the greatest movies ever made and was included in the first group of 25 films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the U.S. Library of Congress in 1989.

SUMMARY:1-800-ON-HER-OWN
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this one-show-only event screening where one lucky guest will win a pair of tickets to see Ani at the Plaza Live on March 8th. \nAni DiFranco crashed onto the music scene in the early ‘90s\, a thundering new voice in the cultural wilderness\, unapologetically bisexual\, political\, and feminist. She toured relentlessly\, thrashing out hundreds of frenzied shows that were part mosh pit\, part hootenanny and part full-on tent revival\, then selling cassette tapes from the trunk of her car to make it to the next gig. \nAni became a worldwide phenomenon when she beat the male-dominated music industry at its own game by founding Righteous Babe Records\, the first “woman-run non-corporate queer-happy” label\, still going strong after nearly 35 years. The press called her “an entrepreneurial wonder” and “the industry’s worst nightmare.” Prince called her “my hero.” Ani simply called herself a folk singer\, dedicated to art\, activism and staying true to herself\, no matter the cost. \n1-800-ON-HER-OWN takes us on a wild cinematic road trip\, from DiFranco’s punk-folk past to her life today as she reinvents herself as a passionate activist and revered rock star. Throughout the ride\, she’s brutally honest\, famously foul-mouthed\, and totally hilarious. Her daily challenges resonate as we reveal both an enduring\, inspiring musical icon and a very relatable contemporary “everywoman” with her own epic fails and hard-won victories.

Unexplainable occurrences swirl around this LA neo-noir\, as Fred Madison (Pullman) starts to receive anonymous VHS tapes of him and wife Renee (Patricia Arquette). At a party\, a mysterious man (Robert Blake) claims to have met him before\, setting off a nightmarish chain of events involving murder\, surveillance\, gangsters\, doppelgängers\, and an impossible transformation.

SUMMARY:The Blood of a Poet
DESCRIPTION:All free La CinOMAthéque screenings will take place in the Truist Auditorium at the Orlando Museum of Art. \nACCESS FOR ALL AT OMA presents: \nLa CinOMAthéque: A collaboration between OMA and Enzian\, with generous support provided by the Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program. \nThe Orlando Museum of Art is thrilled to announce the launch of La CinOMAthéque in partnership with the Enzian Theater\, as part of its “Access for All at OMA\,” an all-new program offering FREE admission to the museum! \nAccess for All at OMA is a monthly free day dedicated to the community. La CinOMAthéque will be a series of 6 bimonthly free screenings of experimental\, avant-garde\, art films in the Truist auditorium at OMA on Access for All day. \nEach screening will be introduced by a UCF film professor and include a talkback with OMA Chief Curator Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon and Enzian Programming Manager Tim Anderson. \n____________________________________________________________ \nThe Blood of a Poet: \n“Poets . . . shed not only the red blood of their hearts but the white blood of their souls\,” proclaimed Jean Cocteau (La belle et la bête) of his groundbreaking first film—an exploration of the plight of the artist\, the power of metaphor and the relationship between art and dreams. \nIn a poet’s room\, an armless statue abruptly comes to life. It invites the poet to step through a mirror and to discover another world. Strange places and characters present themselves to him. The poet tears himself away from these twisted fascinations and returns\, with some difficulty\, to his room. \nOne of cinema’s great experiments\, this first installment of the Orphic Trilogy stretches the medium to its limits in an effort to capture the poet’s obsession with the struggle between the forces of life and death.

SUMMARY:Weirdo: The Story of Five Eight
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Filmmaker:  Live in-person Q&A with the members of Five Eight\, Producers Jackie Schoknecht\, Geoff Melkonian and Director Marc Pilvinsky in conversation with acclaimed musician Tierney Tough (The Pauses). \nAfter being institutionalized for schizophrenia and manic-depression in his early 20s\, Mike Mantione turned to songwriting as a way of dealing with his demons. For 30 years\, loud guitars have kept those demons at bay. \nThe band’s whirlwind tale is primarily told through the voices of its own current band members—Mantione\, guitarist Sean Dunn\, bassist Dan Horowitz and drummer Patrick Ferguson—who are able to look back on both their successes and shortcomings with humor\, acceptance and remarkable tenderness towards each other. Outside perspectives are offered from friends and contemporaries such as Bill Berry (R.E.M.)\, Amy Ray (Indigo Girls)\, Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers)\, Vanessa Briscoe Hay (Pylon Reenactment Society)\, David Barbe (Mercyland) and Velena Vego (40 Watt Club). \nMeet the Filmmaker – Five Eight \n \nAthens\, GA band Five Eight was the vehicle of singer/guitarist Mike Mantione\, a self-professed manic depressive whose music exorcised his personal demons in grim detail. Debuting in 1989 with the self-released Passive-Aggressive cassette\, the band — which also comprised longtime bassist Dan Horowitz\, guitarist Sean Dunn and drummer Patrick ‘”Tigger'” Ferguson — resurfaced two years later with Inflatable Sense of Self. Signing to the Sky label\, in 1992 Five Eight issued their first full-length CD\, I Learned Shut Up\, releasing The Angriest Man a year later; however\, after 1994’s Weirdo\, the group spent the mid-1990s largely out of the spotlight\, finally returning in 1997 with the Ed Stasium-produced Gasolina! That winter both Dunn and Ferguson abruptly left the lineup\, and with new drummer Mike Rizzi\, Five Eight issued 1999’s “The Road Beat the Shit Out of My Favorite Band\,” a split single with Clemente. The full-length The Good Nurse followed on Deep Elm in the spring of 2000. Five Eight returned in 2004 with a self-titled CD\, the first to be released by the band itself.

SUMMARY:Harold and Maude
DESCRIPTION:35mm Screening! \nYoung adult Harold Chasen (Bud Court)\, solitary and friendless by choice\, is obsessed with death\, this fascination manifesting itself in the staging his own fake suicides\, driving a hearse and attending funerals\, even of people he doesn’t know\, all to the chagrin of his exasperated wealthy mother with whom he lives. Mrs. Chasen is determined for Harold to be “normal”\, including her sending him into therapy to deal with his issues and finding him a girlfriend through a computer dating service. It is at a series of funerals that Harold meets Maude (Academy Award®-winner\, Ruth Gordon)\, on the cusp of her eightieth birthday\, she who too attends funerals of strangers. Unlike Harold\, Maude is obsessed with life – her own life to be more precise – she does whatever she wants to please herself\, damned what others may think or how they may be affected. Since she can’t take material possessions with her\, she is more interested in experiences\, with whatever material possessions she has – often “borrowed” without asking – only to further those experiences. Their friendship is initially based on how the other can further their own priority. But as Maude shows Harold how to truly live\, Harold falls in love with her. Their relationship\, already limited in time by the sheer math\, is curtailed even more as Maude shows him only not how to live well but die well.

SUMMARY:Sabbath Queen
DESCRIPTION:100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes! \n Director Sandi DuBowski will be in attendance for an in-person Q&A! \nSandi DuBowski’s epic documentary Sabbath Queen—shot over the span of twenty-one years—follows Amichai Lau-Lavie\, an Israeli descended from an unbroken line of thirty-eight rabbis stretching back a thousand years. Yet as Sabbath Queen opens\, Lau-Lavie is newly arrived in New York in the late 1990s\, a young gay man declaring “Artists are the new rabbis” and appearing around the city in drag as Rebbetzin Hadassah Gross\, the widow of six Hasidic rabbis (all from the same extended family). As the years pass\, Lau-Lavie embraces a range of creative spiritual endeavors\, including Storahtelling and Lab/Shul—until he shocks everyone with his decision to become a rabbi himself\, studying in the Conservative tradition of Judaism. Sabbath Queen is witness to Lau-Lavie’s unfailing courage and grace\, as he grapples with key questions of who we are and who we will be. Stimulating and moving\, DuBowski’s film ends with Lau-Lavie’s words on Israel and Palestine post-October 7th as he evokes the challenge of our lifetime: “How do we reimagine our sacred traditions to achieve peace?” \n\nSandi DuBowski – Director Biography: \nSandi DuBowski is the Director/Producer of SABBATH QUEEN\, Director/Producer of TREMBLING BEFORE G-D\, Producer of A JIHAD FOR LOVE\, and Co-Producer of BUDRUS. SUMMARY:Eraserhead
\nEraserhead: \nA dream of dark and troubling things . . .\nDavid Lynch’s 1977 debut feature\, Eraserhead\, is both a lasting cult sensation and a work of extraordinary craft and beauty. With its mesmerizing black-and-white photography by Frederick Elmes and Herbert Cardwell\, evocative sound design\, and unforgettably enigmatic performance by Jack Nance\, this visionary nocturnal odyssey continues to haunt American cinema like no other film. \n
