Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

***WINNER of 4 Academy Awards including Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography (Conrad L. Hall), Best Original Song and Best Score (Burt Bacharach and Hal David)

“You just keep thinkin’, Butch. That’s what you’re good at.”

One of the most beloved Westerns of all time, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid follows the daring exploits of the charming outlaw Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and his enigmatic partner, the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford), as they rob trains and banks across the American West while evading a relentless posse. When their luck finally runs out, the duo flees to Bolivia, where new challenges test their bond and their fate.

Directed by George Roy Hill (Oscar®-winner for The Sting) and written by two-time Academy Award® winner William Goldman (All the President’s Men), the film blends thrilling action, sharp humor, and the now-iconic Burt Bacharach score, capturing the mythic yet human side of the Wild West.

Beyond its box-office success, the film cemented Robert Redford’s star power, launching a period in his career that would leave an indelible mark on Hollywood as well as lending its name to the world-famous film festival and institute for independent filmmakers that Redford created in the 1980s. As a film, much like Redford himself, its legacy endures as a celebration of cool antiheroes, rugged style, and effortless charisma.

1969, 110 minutes, USA/Mexico, In English and Spanish, directed by George Roy Hill, Rated PG

  • “Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid set the benchmark for buddy action-comedies to come, but there would never be another film that comes even close to exuding the same kind of charm Newman and Redford deliver in their roles.”

    – Jason Zingale, BULLZ-EYE
  • “Note-perfect performances, a screenplay steeped in both nostalgia and a timely sense of insight, and anti-heroes you can't help but love.”

    – Bob McCabe, EMPIRE MAGAZINE
  • “Though Hall's stunning vistas and gorgeous exploration of wide-open spaces hearken back to John Ford, Butch Cassidy otherwise radiates the youthful energy, manic pop playfulness, and antic clowning of the French New Wave.”

    – Nathan Rabin, THE A.V. CLUB
  • “This is the ultimate Paul Newman - Robert Redford movie.”

    – Brian Webster, APOLLO FILM GUIDE
