Pumpkinhead:

When his son is tragically killed by a group of reckless teens, Ed Harley (Lance Henriksen) turns to a mysterious backwoods witch to exact his brutal revenge. In his sorrow and rage, Ed unleashes Pumpkinhead, a towering, demonic creature. But as the bloodshed begins, Ed soon realizes that the price of vengeance is far greater than he bargained for.

With its dense atmosphere, striking creature design, and haunting moral undertones, Pumpkinhead remains a standout in 1980s horror that also marked the directorial debut of 4-time Oscar-winning SFX artist Stan Winston. Best known for his groundbreaking creature work on Aliens, Predator, and Jurassic Park, Winston brought his unparalleled eye for the monstrous to life and imbues the film with a mythic quality, blending folklore and monster movie tropes into a tale that still resonates with horror fans today.

1988, 86 minutes, USA, Directed by Stan Winston, Rated R

  • “Had Pumpkinhead been made in the silent era, it might now be treated with the reverence granted Nosferatu.”

    – Scott Tobias, THE A.V. CLUB
  • “Pumpkinhead is now easily my favorite gourd-based monster.”

    – Reece (@rfeldman9), LETTERBOXD
  • “It rules that Pumpkinhead has his own strobe lighting that follows him around so every time he makes an entrance it looks cool as hell.”

    – Bryan Espitia (@rickdeckard), LETTERBOXD
  • “American rural folk jam shrouded in an ominous atmosphere of thick fog and glimmering colors seeping through it—a backwoods nightmare that’s completely shut off from the rest of the world.”
