Before Spider-Man and Doctor Strange , Sam Raimi exploded onto the horror scene with The Evil Dead—a no-budget, high-octane cabin-in-the-woods nightmare that redefined indie horror.
In the first installment of the famed trilogy, Ash (Bruce Campbell), his girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker), his sister Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss), and couple Scotty (Hal Delrich) and Shelly (Sarah York), drive to a remote cabin in the woods for a fun getaway. While there, they find the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis (aka “The Book of the Dead”), an ancient tome whose text reawakens the dead when read out loud. After accidentally unleashing a wave of evil, they’re dragged one by one into a blood-soaked spiral of madness.
Praised by Stephen King at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival and banned in several countries, The Evil Dead became a lightning rod of controversy and acclaim. Its wildly inventive camera work, DIY gore effects, and relentless pace made it a landmark of horror cinema, launching the career of Bruce Campbell as chainsaw-wielding legend Ash and inspiring generations of filmmakers.

– Owen Gleiberman, BOSTON PHOENIX -
“Shot on 16mm for less than $50,000, Sam Raimi's visceral debut remains a benchmark of modern horror.”
